Swamp Rat Proudly Introduces The Free Rein Wakizashi . . .September 21, 2022 At 9:00 PM Eastern

Gotta agree with you. This handle in particular just doesn't work for me. I took it off the DT-12 and am deciding what to replace it with.
Just so there is no mistake, this handle is not the same as what came on the DT-12, although I hear many people want more of it from Scrapyard Knife Co.

However, it is the same handle as the TNT-15, which has been well received by anyone lucky enough to snatch one up!

Time to answer some questions!

SR-3V is CPM-3V with the Swamp Rat heat treat protocol and deep cryogenic treatment that has been developed.

SR-3V is proving to be an astounding steel and we are getting some amazing performance out of it. There will be some performance and torture videos to come.

Our name is on the blade so our name is on the line! The Swamp Rat reputation is undeniable for our quality as well as our extremely tough blades.

Other than this is a sword and shares the same handle as the TNT-15, The Free Rein is a completely different animal. Curved in all the right places with a smooth machined flat bevel, rounded spine, and deep fuller, this thing just sings through the air.

The Resiprene C handle on The Free Rein has no comparison in absorbing vibration when striking objects or hot spots with repeated movements.

Yes, There is a lot of machining to do on The Free Rein, but with new production techniques you will be impressed with what is coming out of the Swamp.

The price IS absolutely a steal! I don't believe anything out there gives you as much bang for the buck.

Sweet. Thanks for answering my question on 3V. If this is 3V, it does seem like quite the steal. People forget that ~$1,200 Carother's K-18s quickly became $2,300 Carother's K-18s. 3V ain't cheap.

What kind of magical sorcery did you use to cast this spell?

All I can say is WOW. Congrats in making this project a reality…amazing!

Hi VooDooWitchDoctor VooDooWitchDoctor !

Nice looking sword!

As others are asking here, I’m wondering if there’s anything you can tell us about comparative performance of your iteration of 3V to SR 101 and INFI.

In the past I seem to recall the boss making some general comparisons between INFI and SR 101 - that’s partially why folks are willing to pay a premium for INFI.

I’m guessing abrasive edge holding is 3V > 101 > INFI, and toughness is INFI > 101 > 3V.

Is that right?

Based on my readings on what SR101 and INFI likely are, I would summarize things as:

INFI: Supreme toughness, like there's nothing out there on the same level. It also has some corrosion resistance. But those both come at the sacrifice of edge retention. On the plus side, Infi is extremely easy to sharpen. So think of it like an axe head, but even more tough and more corrosion resistant.

SR101: Pretty excellent toughness and you get some pretty solid edge retention as well. And it's easy to sharpen. The downside is corrosion resistance is not very good at all. Some people take advantage of this and patina things to make them look prettier. For example, I have a blue giraffe bone handled ratmandu that I've blue rainbow patinaed by using it to eat steak a few times and it is absolutely beautiful.

3V: Same level of toughness as INFI and 3V. If heat treated right, is basically a stainless (albeit not stainproof) steel. Edge retention is absolutely insane. I have cut down trees with blades made out of it and they still slice paper fine afterwards. The downside is if it does ever get dull, it can be a pain to sharpen. Also, for the manufacturer it is much harder to machine, heat treat, sharpen, etc. And it's not a cheap steel to begin with, so blades made out of it tend to be $$$.

They are all great steels in their own different ways, and probably among my favorites, especially for choppers.

I guess that was an answer. Never been unsatisfied with their ht before, and I'm not gonna start now..

I am bummed after looking again that this didn't have a double cut option though.. this would've been the perfect sword to try it out on.

We've had our comp finishes, coated, cerakote, and even the new stonewash now on the slew of swords coming out; don't get me wrong; It looks nice and all that, but knowing you guys can double cut the machining marks out and didn't is kinda irksome.

It's your best looking uncoated finish.. it actually looks finished (barring stonewashed.. the finish IS scratches). Idk.. I still can't wait to hold it.

Another thing.. for $250 up front / $700+ all at once this time around. Are our shipping times getting better or what? The running "two weeks" joke is funny and all.. but only funny if you paid a dollar till it's almost ready to ship.

Hmmmm I'm sure VooDoo has some SR-3V scraps in the dumpster... I wonder what the Yard could conjure up

IMHO, Rehandling or wrapping the handle on a $300 blade is understandable...

Hint hint 😏

I bet those scraps would make a good utility knife.

Like maayyybe a pokier (I made it a word.. don't worry about it lol) 1020 type thing or sumpin 😁

I’ll add a further comment as one who also makes knives…I would rather make three knives out of 52100 than one knife out of 3V…talk about an uncooperative (I don’t WANNA be shaped! I don’t WANNA be ground!) alloy. Mind you, it’s not my least favorite to work with—that title is currently held by S110V, though magnacut (at least in the bandsaw-cutting phase) is a close contender.

Anyway, long and short of it, I would charge somebody a lot more than the Swamp is charging to make this sword…and I’d probably throw it at them when I was done.
