I'm embarrassed that my first mistake was not reading each post on this issue with full concentration and that I followed this mistake by making a bigger second mistake, which was posting without full knowledge of what I was agreeing to based on what I missed.

Now having read this post, I feel that I need to backpedal.... I just want to make it clear that I DO NOT agree that anyone's artwork is either juvenile, nor would I refer to it as doodling. YES, I'd like to see other styles submitted, but as mymindisamob posted:


His professor is absolutely right and I certainly hope that I've not discouraged anyone from submitting their work, whatever the subject matter is, based on my post and especially the way it was used in Evolute's post.

Jerry & Amy... I also wish to offer sincere apologies to you both for contributing to this issue. It is my mistake that I didn't real all posts fully before posting my opinion out of hand, and I'm also very sorry for how it has contributed to further negative posts. :(

To Evolute... I would suggest that you exercise caution the next time you feel it necessary to quote anything I write in such a way as to to bolster your argument, especially when you wish to harshly criticize other peoples artwork. As an artist yourself, you should know better. If you want to call anyone's work juvenile doodling, don't expect me to back you up and don't lump me in with those who will. It is one thing to say that you don't like something and hope for alternatives, but it is another thing entirely to flat out bash what you don't like by insulting it and those who created that which you don't like with the words that you used.
Also, I believe that Amy is on point with her post and I'd be careful taking issue with her for what she wrote because I believe that she saw exactly what I missed until now. One thing I've learned about Amy... She's usually right.

OK, enough outta me... :o I look forward to seeing the best artist(s) win! Good luck to all who enter their designs. :thumbup:

I whole heartedly agree. I did the same thing. THis was not my intent either.

Then, all I wanted to do was help keep the piece after I saw what was actually said...

THe reponse I read today, by Evolute, made me want to explode, and crawl under a table and hide, all at the same time.

seconded. while I may not like the work, I give a lot of credit and props to anyone who is willing to put the time and effort in to creating it. and as jerry pointed out, I doubt I could do better so I'm in no place to say anyone's work is low quality. though I wouldn't wear a t-shirt with it, I'd love to see more of the previously used work, especially in an expansive manner (large scale pieces, linear story art, etc).
 
I have Zero artistic talent but do have an idea.
How about Vanity License Plates from all the states with attendee's.
That way we'll all know where you are from.

Some great designs in amongst the chatter! ;) I like Mulder's in particular, must be the straight handles swaying my bias.

Here's a sketch I did for an Old Guard member, tattered old hog, roughened from many battles. Not an entry per say, just thought it would be good for the thread. Still a lot of clean up to do on the drawing and I've got to get carving, its going to take a while.

I really dig that one leatherman, it has the mean, tough Hog look, without the blood and gore, monstrous looking stuff, which I agree is over the top and doesn't fit my tastes. Very nice idea.
 
This is my idea for the front. I'm still crafting the back. Since this is a "busse group" t-shirt, the group portion will be on the back, and this would be the front, a kind of company-unspecific image.

In no way to I claim to be a graphic designer, so most of my stuff is photochopped black and whites, since I a)don't have the skill (or time) to do a proper full color version, or b)have the artistic skill to draw something that would actually be final-tshirt-quality.

oh, I like that LVC - and, though it's more Busse-specific than Busse-family specific, I think your idea would work best if the version 1 was the front and version 2 was the back... and maybe "Busse Combat" on one of the sleeves...

either way, I like where you're going with that.

if I had both on one t-shirt I'd probably try to put the newer mistress version on the back, and the older on the front. I like the idea of the older one being on the front to show the initial flagship, a where we've come from kinda thing.

I'm not exactly sure what format jerry wants these in when they are submitted... most of them aren't going to be high enough resolution to work with, so I'm assuming he has a graphics guy who will re-work them for print...

sigh... the photo I used to make this outline wasn't as good as the one for the shbm, so the lines aren't really accurate or clean, especially on the handle scale front.

Really good idea, but Levi's is all over it already. Their 2009/2010 ad campaign is entitled "Go Forth":

I'm aware of it, but Walt Whitman 1855 Pioneers O Pioneers poem is public domain, and I sincerely doubt that Levi's will ever use that portion of the poem, as it would never fit a commercial format made to sell jeans. Likewise, the recording used for their commercial is from 1890. It's not far off from gene wilders claim that the newer movie rendition of the book is a horrible remake of the 1971 movie when it is actually directly from the book. I know the comparison is impossible to avoid, but I'm not sure levi would attempt to sue over a public domain poem.

now, if I put "Go Forth" on the front of the shirt it would be a different story. but it also wouldn't have the meaning I'm going for.

I like your idea a lot. The poem speaks to the power of liberty. The iconic image of the Busse Battle Mistress is pretty powerful but is it enough to carry a shirt representing Busse Combat without the words "Busse Combat"?

it's just the front, and it's more of an inside image than an advertisement, which is why I like it. anyone who has been around busse combat for a while knows the outline of a shbm in an instant, and those who have been around long enough (or read enough) know that the name "battle mistress" was taken directly from (inspired by) that portion of the poem by jerry. it is very specific to busse combat and an homage to the nature of the company, but its certainly not an advertisement. not meant to be :thumbup:
 
aaaaaaaaaaand the back. combine this with the simpler o pioneers front for a very minimalist no-color company t-shirt :p

like I said, I don't claim to be a graphic artist, this was only thing I could think of that I could realistically make with photoshop (and my skill level) without drawing. The knives were taken from photo's posted here on the forums, except the nmfbm which is mine. I just now noticed that the swamp rat's tip isn't curved correctly on the white version.... used a polygon lasso when I should have used a normal lasso :(... I'm not even sure if the scale between the knives is correct...

the colored version (the top text is canvas micarta texture off of a nmfbm):

this was what I had when I first put it all on one page to try to organize into the top two. Even though it's the least savory composition, I like the idea of having all three logo's on one shirt. honestly, I think shirt with just the logo's would be cool.
