Tacoma mall shooting today....

I just take issue with your "do nothing" stance. As I have stated before in this thread, I can not stand by and let things like this happen if I have a chance to stop it.

I do not advocate a "do nothing" stance.

For example, had I been there with my trusty -- and not rusty -- P7, I'm sure I would have used I would have used my God-given ability to remain calm under stressful situations which comes, I think, from my background as an engineer. Engineers are problem-solving, solution-oriented people. I would have done what I felt was best given the situation and given my position and resources to help as many people as possible. If my unique position and the situation allowed me to use my weapon and my training to kill the attacker, then I would have done that to the best of my ability. But if, under the circumstances and given my position at the time, the best use of my calm demeanor and rational mind was to help other people get to safety, then that's what I would have done... even if that meant not being the hero, not charging in, not taking the shot. In that case, the best place for my P7 would have been in my pocket to avoid causing additional panic.

To do the best thing you can, to best use your own resources and skills and personality to help as man people as possible, that is the charge for everyone -- CHL holders and all others alike -- in a situation like this. And if you have no skills and resources and your personality is one of panic, then just at least get out of the way because that's the best thing for you to do.

The only person who was there who I'm going to criticize is the shooter himself. I'm certainly not going to criticize the decisions made by others -- including any CHL holders.

I guess for this particular community of folks, we might want to note that the only citizen to actually try and do something ALSO works in a knife store!!!! And he packs!... and he has no insurance :(

And we now know that training carrys the day in a high stress situation... If yer gonna carry, a knife or a gun, learn how to use it and PRACTICE!!!

My 15-year old daughter and I were also supposed to be there but I didn't want to wrassle with the ferry that day. I also have a CCW and carry a Taurus .38 revolver. I wouldn't have taken a do nothing stance but I would've had to been in a good position to do anything so I wouldn't have put anyone else in harm.

I am a "non-carrying" somewhat of an old geezer. If I was at a mall when some wacko started shooting people, I would not mind having Marty in the area:D

Thomason:

I am a Fl resident with a concealed weapons permit. The permit covers handguns or just about any other weapon as long as you can conceal it. My Fl CWP is valid in 24 states due to reciprocity.

Previously to the law you wrote about, a civilian had a duty to retreat when faced with agression. To run away from unreasonable and unasked for aggression of any kind. The new law says an armed civilian no longer has to retreat in the face of agression. The reasoning seems to be that a law abiding citizen should not have to turn his back and attempt to run away.

I don't know if there have been any test cases yet. Or if getting punched in the nose justifies my shooting the agressor.

My guess is the people who lawmakers who want people to "turn away" have never been shot in the back. Whackjobs don't read laws and abide by them so people like us who have LEGAL permission to carry a weapon should be allowed to use it. After all the fact that we're allowed to carry is assumed that we know how to use it even though a LOT of times that isn't true.

I'm not familiar with Washington State Self Defense Laws and I'm not even sure if these are the right statutes, but here are a couple that I found:

RCW 9A.16.050 Homicide--By other person (meaning other than a Peace Officer)--When justifiable.

Homicide is also justifiable when committed either:

(1) In the lawful defense of the slayer, or his or her husband, wife, parent, child, brother, or sister or of any other person in his presence or company, when there is reasonable ground to apprehend a design on the part of the person slain to commit a felony or to do some great personal injury to the slayer or to any such person, and there is imminent danger of such design being accomplished: or

(2) In the actual resistance of an attempt to commit a felony upon the slayer, in his presence, or upon or in a dwelling or other place of abode, in which he is.

Also: RCW 9A.16.110
Defending against violent crime--Reimbursement.

(1) No person in the state shall be placed in legal jeopardy of any kind whatsoever for protecting by any reasonable means necessary, himself or herself, his or her family, or his or her real or personal property, or for coming to the aid of another who is in imminent danger of or the victim of assault, robbery, kidnapping, arson, burglary, rape, murder, or any other violent crime as defined in RCW 9.94A.030.

Maybe someone more familiar with law in the state can expound on the above. There may also be case law too.

(edited for spelling)

I know there are plenty here who have the courage to stand up for others and have already done so at some point in their lives. The big question is if someone actually gets a chance to act.

Does someone have a valid opportunity with the right tool at the right moment in time to stop this guy for good? If not, then discretion may be the better part of valor and survival could be the only viable option for an individual and their loved ones--whether that individual is armed or not. Gollnick has some good points.

Maybe the tactical aspects of taking out an active shooter armed with a rifle in a shopping mall should be discussed further. Not an easy task for sure, but maybe not impossible either.
