Tactical Folder Under $700

Thanks for the info. Very helpful. Looks like it very similar to the 25 and f3. 21 as well really. Hmm tempting....does the perceived weight feel more since its thicker than the sebenza?

I think so. It's narrower than Sebenza but the thickness of the CF affords great grip.

I have a Sebenza 25 coming in on Wednesday-Thursday and will do side by side pictures including thickness.

I have to weigh the Akribis when I get back since they have only one weight of 5.2 ounces. Perhaps the CF weighs less than the G10.

Here are some published weights:

Spartan Akribis: 5.2 oz.
CRK Sebenza 25: 5.2 oz.
CRK Sebenza 21 Large: 4.7 oz.
Wilson Combat Star-Tac (Umnumzaan): 5.0 oz.
Wilson Combat Eagle: 4.8 oz
Curtiss F3 3.5": 5.1 oz.

I just weighed the Akribis CF and it's only 4.84 ounces so it's definitely lighter than the G10 one or whatever they have posted on their website as 5.2 ounces.

Also, weighed some others:

Akribis (CF): 4.84 oz.
Wilson Combat Eagle: 4.85 oz.
Curtiss F3 3.5" (diamond texture): 5.05 oz.
Wilson Combat Star-Tac (Umnumzaan): 5.01 oz.
Strider SNG (GG): 3.87 oz.

I just weighed the G10 Akribis on a postal scale and it's 4.8 ounces. With the tube & papers it's 6.4 ounces, so who knows where the 5.2 ounces came from?!?

Check out the SniperBladeworks LPC. The handle is VERY ergonomic. They usually come with a thick slab of cpm154 or s30v and in the clip point variant. The knife is ideal for snap cuts because of the "pistol grip" handle. They can in tons of different variations. Typically you can snag one on a dealer's website for $625. On here they usually sell for less

I had the opportunity to meet Andre Thorburn at the NYCKS and he was a great guy to talk to, and answered all my questions with a genuine sense of pride while I was pointing out some features of his knives. He does have some rugged models that reflect his level of craftsmanship, and then there are his fancier and more office-friendly designs that I really liked because they were still pretty substantial. He uses IKBS and a couple of different mechanisms to open the blade (conventional flipper and discrete tang flippers) that you have to personally handle yourself to really appreciate how well-made these knives are. They were some of the smoothest knives I've ever had the pleasure of fondling. You won't be able to stop flipping them. Sent you a VM.

Ram, would you rather carry the arkibis or 21 for edc? Why?

Do you know how these hold up on thr secondary market? For example the f3 is a fairly new knife and you cant pick them up really anywhere right now. And they sell in a flash on the second market. They too are 500 to 600 knives. However the arkibis is available at a few places and not selling fast, which is weird to me...

I have some nice customs but I edc my SnG.
Try a Willumsen folder. If you want light weight, go 1/2 G10, 1/2 Ti handle.

I would look at Jake Hoback's knives, or maybe Carson Tech.

Mostly, I EDC flippers and at other times 3" or less folders due to being mostly in Los Angeles.

I think Spartan is just too new and unknown for recognition in secondary market and easy availability. It could also be the attraction for flippers in general. Most cannot justify the price compared to a Sebenza. Those are conjecture on my part.

I think the worth of the Akribis becomes apparent once you hold one.

That's why my Strider SNG Gunner Grip weighs just 3.87 ounces, that is, titanium on one side and G10 on the other side.

Ram, I picked up your model used on the secondary market tonight at a fair price. Interested to see how it compares to my 21. Thank you for the help and patience! I think I am done for now haha, but am still interested in getting a short list going. So more suggestions are welcome from everyone.

Congrats. Saved some dough as well. Can't beat that. Hope you'll like it. Let us know.

Ya I will.

I would still like to hear what you think of it compared to your 25 you have coming

I'll do a comparison take and some pictures of all six (Akribis, Eagle, F3, Star-Tac, SNG, 25) once the Sebenza 25 gets here on Thursday.

I was waiting on getting a good deal on a brand new 25 and got a really good deal just in time for the holidays! :)

Payj,

Did you get your Spartan Akribis yet? Once you get it please post about it in this thread so that others may benefit: Spartan Blades Akribis folders with 3.5" blade of S35VN

I received my CRK Sebenza 25 tonight so over the weekend I'll post side by side pictures and comparisons (all have a 3.5"-3.6" blade):

  • Spartan Akribis
  • Wilson Combat Eagle
  • Curtiss F3 Medium (3.5")
  • Wilson Combat Star-Tac (Umnumzaan)
  • Strider SNG GG
  • Chris Reeve Knives Sebenza 25
