Tactical light, $37 shipped

Good deal. I'm sure you'll like it, Ken.

I was just looking at CPF again, and found a direct size comparison- the the L1 is even shorter than my X1.

i'll chime in, i've got a river rock 2AA and it's very bright at 1.5 *watts* - not bad for $20 list, and i've gotten a couple at $10 on sale. however, the beam is best described as "moonlight"...

the light on the fenix is well shaped - good bright spot, *and* even side spill/flood. very very good. the price is right for the size, and it's easy to feed. i've also seen then at http://www.countycomm.com for $35 lately - and they have other cool stuff. yar. that "tactical switch" isn't really. it's click on. click off. and momentary off (from on). there's no momentary on like a tactical would have... someone has crafted a two stage switch though for low and high.

i'm led to believe from my readings on CPF that river rock will be carrying some variant of the 1AA model and selling those at target as well - that's all i know so far... but i imagine it'll be $20 or less - keep an eye out for it.

i used to own a lot of custom super bright ($$$) lights, and have sold almost all of them but one, because stuff like fenix is just sick, and river rock - good lord. the price to performance ratio is devasting :>

Do they make any larger/heavier models?

fenix just makes two that i know of so far, 1xAA and 2xAA comparable to a maglite 2xAA and/or the river rock one.

riverrock makes a 2xCC that's pretty hefty - solid metal. the 2xAA makes a good kubotan. both are the same brightness.

I have no personal stake here, Keno: I have 3, repeat, 3 SureFires (E2, L4, A2), and as of yet, no Fenix lights (though I plan to remedy that as soon as possible). I am only trying to notify my fellow members of an incredible and useful deal. I'm not really sure what or why you're arguing.

The link you show does not appear to show the SureFire as brighter; in fact, the Fenix appears to have almost the same intensity at the "hot spot", while managing to have a much wider spill area. In other words, at the distance shown, the SureFire has a tighter beam, while the Fenix has a more "floody" beam, with about 2/3 more useable light thrown in peripheral areas. This is a known characteristic of the E1s, with an optional head sold by SureFire to convert the beam to a wider, though shorter-ranged, more "floody" type.

John, never thought you did have an agenda. I just disagreed [and still do] that the Fenix is brighter and puts out 46 lumens, the reviews on CPF seem to agree.

Apart from that, I did some research on the Fenix L1P, and as I said before, it really seems to be a good deal. Thanks for pointing that out, it went below my radar 'til now. :)

John, thanks very much for the link.

Can you tell me how does this Fenix compare to the Innova X-5? I got my X-5 for $37 shipped; I think they are normally a bit higher.

Jefff, could you and John help me out here? That light you polished the bezel on, posted with a pic of the knife and watch, isn't that the E2D? Or is the Q3 something different? Looks like the same bezel to me. I am considering getting an E2D. Don't need the LED's of the Aviator, and it is way more $; besides I like the bezel on the E2D and the light output is better.

Thanks for any info.

i have an X5, and without actually getting it, am going to claim that the premium fenix 1.5 model blow the X5 away, the light pattern is better, and it's more white than blue... and it's smaller, and it's cheap to feed - 1xAA vs 2x123 (even at $0.75 per 123 an AA is super cheap feeding).

the river rock 1.5 W is brightest, but very narrow beam. river rock also has a 2xAAA that's 0.5 W that is REALLY bright for its size, and make a great tech tool for getting into narrow bits on a computer (or gun, or ...). very white.

i like the X5, and won't give mine up, it's solid, well made, and has a ... nice feeling to it. also would make a SOLID keychain fob, kubaton, etc...

collect them all.

Norm,
That's the Nuwaii QIII 3watt led in Jeff's photo. John put up a good photo of the Q3 with the Fenix L1P, and two Surefires in post #17
Regards,
Greg

Yeah sorry for not being more specific, Ripper is right on the money it is a Nuwaii QIII 3watt led .. I just had to mess with it to make it "more mine" ;) I polished the inner bezel and also had a TWOJ bin luxeon put in it.. I am also a very dedicated reader on candle power forums and found a guy to do it on there.. I also added glow paint to the reflector around the base.. Gives it a cool effect when switched off..

The defender bezel on the E2D is more pronounced..As to be used as a pain compliance or last ditch tool.. On these Q3's they are more of a way to let you know you left your light on if you happen to sit it down on it's face.. Mine has kinda an edge on it now though from the polish job I put on it.. Trying to make a sort cheap version of the E2D..

Jeff and Ripper thanks very much! It also looks like the E2D is longer and so a bit less concealable. I'll have to go on the candle power forum and try to figure some of this out. Sounds like there are a lot of potentially complicated setups that I know nothing about right now.

Thanks again for the info.

Sorry, Norm, I was gone all day yesterday, from about 1000.

SureFire does make good lights, without question. It's not really fair to compare
the E2 to the P1, since the E2 is a double cell light, while the L1P is powered by only 1 AA battery. That's why I initially compared it to the smaller SureFire E1, though as Keno said, looking at lumen count alone may be somewhat misleading.
Still, I'm looking forward to getting a L1P, and have no immediate plans to buy another E1 (bought one for a friend a few years ago).

Personally, I think crenelated bezels on flashlights- for use as emergency impact tool- are a gimmick, one that will add weight, length, and make them more likely to be viewed as a weapon instead of a go-anywhere tool, and also more likely to chew up your pants.

Norm, I don't own an X5, though- again- I did buy one for a friend. The ones I've played with seem to have a fairly nice beam, but nothing awe-inspiring...and I have enough 123-powered lights as it is.

John

Thanks for starting this post John. This web-site is a good one. My brother-in-law & I are both ordering Monday.

Dan:

Yes. It's a little shorter than the X1, which is itself just about small enough to work on a keychain. For a dedicated keychain light (if you're like me, I tend to hang a lot on my keychain), though, something like an LOP might work even better.

Upsides: even smaller, lighter, shorter.
Downsides: twist, not pushbutton; not as bright; fairly new, so more expensive.

John

Thanks for this thread John. I picked one up. That and a bag of Steves little fob sized LED guys. Those are cool too. Been meaning to look up a forum and find a good deal, so you've saved me the time.

I was going to order one of those Fenix lights, but they don't take credit cards.
lame.:( does look like a good deal.

They take credit cards via a new PayPal feature. During checkout, when you get to the PayPal secure payment center you have the choice of using a PayPal account or paying with a credit card (no PayPal account required).
