Tactical rifle thoughts

Ever dropped one of those loaded mags on a bare foot yet? :D (Sorry, just considering my own luck with such things)

Next big gun purchase for Mikey....454 Casull or M1A...Although a Suppressed 77/22 is in consideration also.....

At least I've got another nine months or so to make up my mind....:o

This is my rifle, there are many like it...errr maybe not, but this one is mine. I have had it for 15 years now. I added the dodads about a year ago. I kinda miss the peep sights and shooting over wood though. Carefully consider if pimping is necessary.

Syrinx that is indeed an M-1A...with as many G.I. guts as I could muster up.

The Stock is an ERB. Either the price has doubled since I bought it or the single life I was then enjoying made my money stretch twice as far...I got it from here: http://www.fulton-armory.com/MAParts.htm

It is an instant bedding stock, built like a tank and has an adjustable cheek piece. It is a bit forward heavy for a full length M-14 barrel I've found though...which ruins my shooting experience...maybe I should have the barrel cut to a shorty.

Jai,man awsome website thank ya much, looks like socom16 for me,Urban rife
thing ya know. fast target double tap scoot, scoot!

Yeah, that's in keeping with the current market on clothes for the M1A. I checked into this after the article in Guns n Bammo and decided I liked walnut just fine.

Kel-Tec, known previously for inexpensive, easily concealable firearms, and more recently for innovative, affordable rifles and carbines, has introduced a rifle, the RFB, that appears to be the rifle many Americans are looking for.

Advantages: extremely compact for barrel length, high-capacity, uses commonly available, sturdy magazines.

Disadvantages: high cost, higher weight than typical hunting rifle.

Wow. That thing is wild. Especially the ejection. Who'da thunk it?

Don't exactly look my speed, but I wouldn't be above goading a buddy into buying one so I could play with it too.:D

Nice boomsticks, everyone.

Had a FAL (actually Sprinfield Armory SAR4800) that would keep even crappy surplus on a 2"x2" post-it note at 100 yds all day, never did have a longer range to check it out. I might have to steal it back from by brother someday.

These days its all AR's for me, and with the heavy weight rounds accuracy out to 600+ yds is not a problem for a good rifleman. My SAM-R with a Kreiger barrel is capable of doing .3" groups at 100 yds, although it takes a better shooter than me to do it all the time. I truly wish I had more time to practice, but work does pay for the toys, just doesn't leave any time for them. :grumpy:

There is a precision rifle forum over on arfcom:

Good info there.

"Tactical depends upon the use. There is no best. The use of the word is hystericaly funny, and finally rather depressing....as arms afficianados become shrill even their toothbrushes are in camo..and are tactical.
Tactical Tactical Tactical, yanny yanny yanny....it's the white noise sound of modern arms."- Munk

There it is... My farm of "Tacticool weapons" based on situation- FN SPR A1a with Nikon 2.5-10 Tactical in Badger mounts; RRA with Jon Jardine built contract SPR upper, IOR 2.5-10 MP8; RRA 16" A3/Aimpoint; Remington 870 police; LVSF 7mm-08, Nikon 2-7; Ruger 10/22 SS/lminate; NEF 20 guage single; Ruger KMK512; Kimber first Gen 1911.
Each proper for different callings & each serves well for appropriate situation. "Generally" speaking, a tactical weapon has been modified/designed to deliver consistant performance in harsh use. They are expected to take considerable abuse with low maintenance.

your post reminds me that the good ole shotgun is still one heck of a one man army.

If we were talking long term wilderness survival- Modern Rolling block by Uberti, hard chrome plating and hand dies. Cartridge: 45LC/.410, 45-70, 30-30. Any of whcih could be loaded with black powder and round balls could be cast for small game or overpowder/overshot wads for shot in 57-70. Versitile and very few moving parts.

Munk,
I like simple!! :) Three ball bearing rule applies.

What did you think of Savage's BP/Smokeless bolt?

In truth, one weapon is best, whatever it is. If the SHF, I'd pass out weapons to whomever was at the munk compound at the time.

They should market to the ones who like to cower in a corner as well as the tactical people.

I'd post pics of my "Yella" rifle but I don't have webspace anymore. :(

The pic would be the rifle and a box of Depends. :D

From what I've heard and read, lot's of people soil their pants in combat.
As for cowering in fear in corners, we bravely name such spots and call them 'bunkers'; like the munk compound. Just another term for squating behind shelter while heavily armed.

Kinda reminds me of what happened the other night; my 7 year old felt sick and ran into the bathroom. I don't think he had a plan. He seemed to be heading towards the tub. We have a large tub and he likes it, he can almost swim it is so large. Maybe he thought it would catch everything. Maybe he thought of it because it was comforting. He passed right by the toilet, he could have made it. But the toilet is dirty. Everyone knows what happens in a toilet. No germs for him. No poop factor for him. Who do we think he is? No Sir.
So splat all over the floor, just short of the tub. Hit the wall, bathroom scale, box of baby wipes, and a few gun mags. I used a few rags before I got smart and pushed it all into a dust pan. Scoop the stuff up. How much can one small tummy hold? Lot's of strawberries in there; his birthday cake.
I felt a little guilty. Was it my cooking, the eggs on the sandwiches we'd had earlier a tad too old?
His older brother was complaining of a stomach ache too. Just what I needed.

For a little guy, throwing up is an ultimate betrayal of the body system. It feels a little like death. If your body can reject all the stuff that was about to become part of you, then nothing was safe.

Next day everyone wanted to know if it was clean in there. I pinesolled everything. The smell of the cleaner reassures them. I don't know if the germs are killed or not. Used a germicide too.

Trav told me he'd felt sick right before lunchtime at school, so I felt better about my cooking. THe meat was really bad and stringy, Carter said. REal bad. Probably those dogs we'd seen and had that encounter with. No one had seen them again. Maybe one of the dogs was gay and Trav's body rejected the offbeat material.

meat.

+1 for the Cooper Scout Rifle concept. I've had mine since they first came out and haven't bought nor felt the need to get another rifle since. That rifle plus my Ruger 10/22, and pre 64 Win .30-30 rounds out my needs. Only other one I'll consider in the future is a Savage 99 takedown model. Check out the Scout concept for speed and versatility, I think you'd really like it.

DEA Firearms Officers are no different from the Firearms Training Cadre of any other large Agency....always trying the newest, coolest concepts in armaments. The question was always "Can we get one that does..?(this or that)", never "Should we do this, just because we can???" They were forever pressing all manner of full auto marvels into my hands, and extolling the virtues of the newest technology. Virtually all of the full auto stuff issued to me went straight into the car trunk and stayed there, even though at that time I ran the DEA state and local task force for seven of the eleven years I spent in Detroit, and I truly believe that a supervisor leads from the front, rather than from behind a desk.

Virtually any good deer rifle will serve you better than the latest tactical wonder, and will probably be more accurate if you handload your shells. Although I do not purposely throw myself into the nearest mudhole to shoot my deer each year, any good bolt action, single shot, or even modern lever action will function and serve you well in all sorts of inclement weather without being coddled. Looking cool will not save you injury; Beware the man with just one gun, he probably knows how to use it............jn
