Take a GEC #26, stretch the frame to a #79, ...there, thats better ;-)

Your welcome Gary and thanks, I have tried to like it. I really blame it on my old affection for Spyderco leaf blades. Not to mention my first traditional was a Camillus boyscout whittler that has a small clip instead of a pen. I like the long sweeping belly or have grown to like the big sweep of a short spey(I like to use it like a fine chisel). Guess the pen is just to much of an inbetweener for my tastes which, will change over the next few days, weeks, decades ;). Ah, I could go on but dont want to derail your thread.

Looking forward to seeing your decision here and almost forgot about this little gem. It was a gift from Paul and it sure is a great little knife. The full handle and short blade do make for skilled cutting. I know its not a wharnie but for the price you could modify it to your liking.

That Coffee House Acrylic is the Half Whitt of choice! Regret getting the jigged bone instead.....

Thanks, Will

Will, the color was most fantastic with that one. I personally did not care for the tactile feel of acrylic. Even given my loathing of the pen I have almost purchased another. One of the dealers has a wild Bocote version that speaks to me :)

You could always snap the Pen off....:D:eek: Or mod it into Coping. Bocote can have very nice stripes in it.

Ill stick to my 55 for now. It speaks to me, but others speak louder ;)

A few recent pics by others have really brought it into a new light for me.

Yes, well I'm extremely keen on my Houndstooth, lot of blade, interesting shape and not too heavy.

Agree wholeheartedly! Too bad the blade is too long for what Gary wants, the tip is such a great tool.

Yep, had a really nice hounds tooth, blade just a tad too long for my purposes so off she went but it is a lovely knife!!!
Have to put up some of the Frenchie's again I think to help pay off the "not so bright" folder that I ordered tonight! we'll see how well that plays out, or someone will get a chance at a nice stag scaled folder...again ! ;)

Hmm now that I've ordered it, it strikes me that the blade will probably be the same length as what the Hounds Tooth is? Probably a long shot in the dark, but if someone has a Hounds Tooth and a Half Whitt could you post them side by side to see how the blades line up?

Take a look at the oar carver knives. Not made by gec but very similar to what you're looking for.

Or maybe mod one of gec's blades yourself.

I love woodcarving and just recently have been getting back into traditional knives. I picked up my first gec, a 3 blade weaver jack and was so impressed that I'm currently waiting on a single blade #45 roughneck with kingwood handles and a #72lb warncliff cody scout in antique green jigged bone.

Thanks I noticed those on Amazon, but a 'feared' just end up with something that wouldn't be worth the time. I may end up shortening the one blade but ONLY do that if it proves that I can't comfortably work with it's length.

Just looked at a photo of the Hounds Tooth, they have the main blade out the smaller end verses the larger end, so, that will be a marked difference also the tang's are sunken too, nice touch, well the main blade is, the pen blade is while both are closed.

Your best bet may be to figure out a knife that has your knife in it and grind it out. I have done that with some kitchen knives with great results.

I don't know how much OT I'm going but...
I've often wondered about whittling and carving (I only made a few attempts at it), and my conclusion is that folders are not the best knives out there for the task. I know there are many people out there who can whittle and carve amazing things with any slipjoint, yet if I was after a whittling knife, I would follow Derrick's advice and mod a knife to my wishes. So far, my best bet would be a kitchen Opinel knife (nice grind, thin blade, and easy to modify even the handle).
Or, should I stick with a folder/slipjoint, modify a folding Opinel, or get a stockman/cattleknife in a comfortable frame, and forget about the main blade :)
By the way, Victorinox doesn't offer the custom shop service like Buck does. Should they ever decide to take that route, my bet is that they will be submerged with orders and will be forced to slow down their regular production.

This right here is great advice Fausto. The 53 from GEC would work great, big handle and the main cali clip is so low to the frame you will forget its there. The coping rides very low as well and the handle is so big and comfortable.

Gary, you have great taste in knives my friend! Look forward to pics of the new "dull" knife ;)

Thanks guys I'll see how it goes, and I guess there isn't a build your own site but it sure would be spiffy if victorinox had one !

as for Congress patterns, I picked this one up a few years ago at the Lewisburg PA knife show, they host one there each year in Feb. I liked the overall look of the knife, here's a 3 1/2" frame knife, but the blades are just barely over 1 1/2" long each, making for expert control of the blade tips. it's a close rendition at least for handle to blade ratio I'm looking for, but would like something just a touch fancier ;)

Gary, I prefer the Coping/Sheepsfoot blade shape to Wharncliffe for whittling. If you would consider using more of a Coping blade, or you could modify it a bit, the 4" "Cuban" frame Stockman pattern from GEC works pretty good.

I made this ball in cage with the pictured #25:

My hand would hurt after a while using that small handled little devil, but I was determined to finish what I started with 1 knife, and I wanted to keep my Cuban mint, but I did take a side by side photo while I debated weather to give in and just use it anyway. Basically a #25 Sheepsfoot in the #53 frame.

I didn't quite get them lined up, you can see they are almost identical is length.

Someone with the skill could disassemble a Stockman and reassemble it as a single blade folding whittling knife.

that looks pretty nice! gotta wait on funds to build up again now though! :( Thanks for the comparison photo

Did someone say Bocote? Here's my not so bright knife.

Gary I can get a side by side pic if you're still interested. Just let me know.
