Well, the mailman knocked on the door this afternoon and had a box from the Royal Mail for me.
I was going to lay everything out on the table outside, but it was very windy today, so I had to move it all to the desk inside. As I started pulling items out of the box, they just kept coming and coming until the desk was covered with great stuff!
All the knives Jack has already shown off were there.
Wait a second, what's that on the right there? I don't remember that one!
Looks like Jack snuck another knife in the package, a nice little Richards penknife with pearly-looking synthetic (?) covers.
Jack, I have to tell you, the best thing about all these knives is that, with the exception of the Victorinox, I don't own anything quite like any of them. Even the Vic is a pattern I haven't owned before, and a good one at that, containing the bare necessities for a German electrician who could just use a drink.
Along with the knives, there were several other goodies in the package: a magnifying glass, a compass, a bottle opener, a couple
coasters beer mats, a trick lock/cigar cutter, a couple British coins and some gifts for my daughter, Eleanor, which included a book, a bath toy, a wooden double-decker bus and an antique child's hairbrush. (I'm assuming that last one is for her, although my hair gets pretty messy at times.)
Here's a closer look at some of the items. I really like the bottle opener, which is quite hefty for its small size.
The trick lock & cigar cutter is very interesting. Being somewhat familiar with the old trick knives, I figured it out fairly easily.
Jack also included a book on penknives, a pamphlet from the Museums Sheffield about cutlery in Sheffield, and some lovely postcards: several showing vintage scenes from Sheffield (including the Joseph Rodgers & Sons factory), one featuring a brig called
David and another showing the 1822 Rodgers' "Year Knife," which puts the Wenger Giant to shame!
Jack, thank you
so much for this wonderful package! This was a lot of fun, and far more than I could have asked for.
Oh, and Ellie wanted me to tell you she says, "Thanks!" too.
