Taking a one year hiatus. Feels good. **FAIL**

I just ordered two knives yesterday.
this inspired me to check my status of knife orders - and my last order was 5/25/22 - so I almost made it 13 months without really trying.

typically, I don't buy a knife unless I think it will be a regular user for me - and better than the existing knife that I have for that use.

easier said than done. I would be able to come up with AND stick to a plan (of not buying knives) similar to yours only when I'm sure that I am no longer interested in whatever knives that I do not have.

Hello Knife People!

A little history:

I’ve been essentially obsessed with knives since a very young age, and as my exposure to knives has grown, my appreciation for them has as well.

I’m lucky enough to be able to use my knives outdoors frequently, and this is one of my favorite activities.

As my resources have increased, I’ve found myself spending more on knives and buying them somewhat more frequently.

My wife is super cool (thanks Baby if you ever happen to read this ❤️!) and has never questioned my purchases, but we’re both pretty frugal generally so I try to keep myself in check, as I’m under no illusions that these objects are “investments” for the most part.

Partly I keep myself in check (not purchasing multiple expensive knives in a row) so that if a “grail” shows up, I’ll be able to grab it.

Ok back to the present:

I was lucky/fast enough to score a Busse Combat Military Overrun Liberty Heart in what Busse calls a “Ganzaa”. It should be in the mail soon, and I’m pretty excited.

This knife is among my very favorite designs of anything they have offered and will be my first Busse (although I’ve been a fan for 2+ decades and have several Swamp Rat and Scrap Yard knives).

It came at a slightly awkward time however, as I’ve recently been spending more than usual. 😅

Anyway, I made a decision, and told my wife (to make it stick) that I wouldn’t be buying any knives for myself for a year.

She may have rolled her eyes JUST a little, and then she started to say something about the calendar year, but I cut her off and proclaimed that it would be a solid 12 months.

And surprisingly, it feels pretty good knowing I don’t have to pay such close attention to everything for awhile.

Have you ever considered taking an official break? Saving up for something special might help. (You can tell your partner I said so). 😉

Good luck to you!

I'm on one myself due to price raises, interst increase and the fact that I lost 3000 $ a year when my son turned 18 and his gilfriend is also living with us, none of them have a job.

Also, I did a knife count the other day, turns out I have more than 80 knives so I think I'm set 🤣

Would be cool to try some MagnaCut, but for now I'm resisting.

Well… I’m thinking of putting a hold on buying too.
I have more than I’ll ever need. I think this zdp189 endura will hold me till next year.

Nothing has really got me going off my rocker.
I may join you in this buying hold for awhile.

I honestly think I need help haha. I think the chase is what keeps most of us in the cycle not necessarily the knife. I’m not delusional to think that my CRK, CPK and Shiros give me performance that I couldn’t get from much less expensive knives. There is just something about the subtleties, machining and craftsmanship that I appreciate and the price is justified for me.

Most my hobbies come in waves and I’ve gone years without purchasing a knife but I’ve been on a steady kick for the past 5 years with no meaningful breaks

I bought my first CRK Sebenza when I was 18. It was probably 3/4 of my net worth and I’ve had zero regrets. That certainly set the bar high for a knife nut, set the bar very expensive too 😂

Good luck to you, and I hope it sticks. I just bought a home and got into photography, so I am also de-prioritizing blades for now. Moving and packing up all of one's belongings always makes one reflect on how much is needed.

I hear and appreciate what you are saying, personally I will take a break when I die. I like to believe that we will all be remembered for something, for me, this

^LOL

I’m definitely not planning to stay away from this forum - that would make the challenge too easy!

Went cold turkey and stopped buying any knives before Xmas last year and I haven't messed up yet.

The plan was to sell (rather than buy any) knives this year but a few attempts to sell yielded no results. So, since it takes more effort to sell than buy them, I'm going to wait to see if the market improves for sellers next year (2024) until I try to sell again.

A few years ago I made a whole plan as far as "limiting" my purchases. In late 2015/first half of 2016 I sold a most of my smallish accumulation of knives to pay for expenditures of what would soon be my ex-wife. After the divorce, I slowly got back into it, would buy one, maybe two per year at best. Then in 2018 I had my liver transplant, spent most of the year and part of 19 in the hospital. In 2021 I believe I bought a cool but overpriced knife case from Massdrop, and came up with some rules. When the case was full, if I wanted to buy a new knife, I had to sell/trade one. Also, no safe queens. If I'm not willing to use it, I will not buy/keep it. This has kept me in check. I'm fixing to sell two, but I keep getting busy and forget.

I've gotten to the point where there are quite a few I might sell off, as I now have a selection of favorites that get carried frequently, and a bunch that I have to actually think about carrying once in a while. All have been used to some extent, and I know I will inherently lose money on them, but I didn't buy them for an investment. Its funny too, because some of these knives were ones I really loved, until I discovered ones I like better, as my tastes have refined.

I also have knives that remain part of my collection for nostalgic/personal reasons. They may not see much rotation, but remain because there is no way I could ever part with them.

Its funny though, because all of this means that my sell one to buy one is sort of going away. Its become keep only what I absolutely love or am sentimental about. Its a surprisingly small list. Many of the "trends" of the past several years have turned me off, so luckily I avoided jumping on some of those bandwagons, like copper handles. I absolutely abhor the smell and feel of copper, and don't care for metal handles anyway, especially on something like a PM2, adding an ungodly amount of weight to the knife.

I see y'all mentioning not coming on Bladeforums to curb your spending. Maybe I have more self restraint, not sure but I love this community and have no plans to leave. The people here have done so much for me, especially when I was dealing with my liver failure/transplant. I've been fortunate to meet a few members as well.
