Taking a one year hiatus. Feels good. **FAIL**

Sounds like a good idea. And it is very doable. My last purchase was the Spyderco PITS, March of '22. So far so good. This year I have a preorder for a Kephart, but that's for the kitchen. I don't think that counts. 🥲 Other than that I would like a Strider PT, prob still a few months away from it though. I am also selling a knife, so all in all my knife buying and knife count is definitely plateauing.

This place can be one part networking and one part enabling, but if I ever decided I needed to own all the knives I saw on this forum I'd be living in a tent under a bridge in pretty short order. I decided that after a few years of knife binging that this year I'd limit myself to a dozen at most and thanks to the sticker shock of inflation by many brands I've been able to stay well under that self-imposed limit. I've only bought three knives so far and perhaps have another couple more coming in the mail.

Ok time to fess up - I have something to admit to you folks:

My “hiatus” was a technical failure.

I received my “hiatus knife” and while I loved the handle ergonomics, I wasn’t in love with the tan color or the exaggerated harpoon profile, so FOR ONCE I resisted the temptation to immediately run outside and start chopping with it. Instead I acquired a couple of sheathes and let it sit for a bit…

I’m very happy I did, because a short time later Busse came out with the “Dirt Dart Steel Heart” and it’s my favorite Busse design by far.

Same handle, but with a beautiful clip point and available in black…

So, I decided to re-start my hiatus from the date I put my deposit on the Dirt Dart, and will sell the Liberty Heart. Of course that makes my original hiatus a fail, but fortunately I have a very patient wife who didn’t make me feel bad about it. 👍👍

Anyway I’m extremely excited for my second “first Busse”, and I’ll post a pic when it arrives…

Have you ever considered taking an official break? Saving up for something special might help. (You can tell your partner I said so). 😉

I took a break from it all in 1997, and came back only a little bit. Sold off the whole collection of Randall's and other customs and used the money for the wife and I to take a month long road trip and 2d honeymoon. Were went counter clockwise from our home in Maryland to the badlands, Custer National Park, Yellowstone, Bryce, Grand Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands, Mesa Verde. Camped out a lot and stayed in the Yellowstone lodge and in Grand Canyon stayed in the Bright Angel Lodge on the rim. Best money I ever spent.

I still did some traditional pocket knife collection on a much smaller scale, but even that went away with me selling off and giving away most of them. Just reached a point in life where the knife thing just faded out for me, and the people in my life mattered more than things. Now I'm happy with just a small SAK in my pocket. If my SAK won't handle it, then I have a machete in the car trunk. Just don't need anything more. I come to the forum to touch base with friends I've made over the years, and to sort of keep touch with what's going on. Kind of like the reformed alcoholic who drops by the bar to sip on a club soda with a lime in it and talk with old friends.

Did the same thing with my gun collection.

I can fit my whole knife collection in one hand now. Never looked back.

Just goes to show how we all have different tastes, I like the tan and clip point better than the Dirt Dart (no not an offer to buy either :p ). what are the blade lengths of both?

I try to scale back but mostly now just trying to stay with some pocket knife purchases and stay away from more expensive stuff, I have relapses sometimes.

The Liberty Heart is 7”, the Dirt Dart is 6.4”. I like the LH blade shape, but the DD blade shape (shortened Urgent Fury style) is my favorite from Busse so far - and I’ve seen all except one of their designs…

Congrats on the beauty. This is certainly an addiction. The only way for me to control my purchasing is to stay away. Problem is that I have several hobbies. So walking away from ine just enables the others more. I have staued away from the watch forums for a year now. But my cigar, wine and scotch/bourbon spending went up. Its a loosing battle. Everyone isctrying to take my money.

I have slowed down quite a bit with my knife purchases. I really don't know why. I should not have posted this as now I'll probably make a purchase next week.
