Talk me into a 53 pattern

I've got a Northfield 54 moose in orange crush acrylic, that I won in a very generous GAW by our fellow forumite Chief (Thanks, John!), and it's just dandy. I really like that I don't have to pay any attention to which direction I pick up the knife -- just grab it and open, and I've got the same blade ready to go. It's a great size, with a lot of blade length packed into the frame. Very well built, F&F is top notch. Bear-trap springs -- no worries about blades closing when you don't want them to, almost as if it were a lockback. Love it.

The acrylic covers really come alive in the sunlight, and the blades and springs took on a really gorgeous, dark patina. This is one of my favorites.
I predict you'll love a 53/54 pattern.
Also on my wishlist is a Cuban Pen, which is appealing to me due to its slimness, being a single spring knife.

Hope this helps.

That orange crush acrylic is just beautiful against the brass, the patina'd springs and blades, and the bolsters. Very nice!

I hate 53s, they're really lousy knives and a terrible pattern, I have no idea why I own about 50 of them!

If I were you, I wouldn't buy any more of them, just leave them for other fools to buy . . . like me. ;) :D

...

Wow, Jeff, that's a beautiful obsession you have going there!!:D:eek::thumbup::thumbup:
I'm really drawn to the symmetry of equal-end patterns.

I agree! Great photos of a great knife!

Of the 53's I prefer the TK Cuban with the pen and single spring. I just wish it was offered in some of the more exotic looking covers.

Grabbed mine at lunch time, while I was at home making a sandwich. Snapped a few more pics just now.

Thanks, GT, the large equal end is a great "canvas" for the many different handle materials the Cuban stockman has been produced in, and I'm close to getting them all, but still have four I haven't been able to find due to such small production numbers. River Valley Green bone (10 made), Grits & Molasses acrylic (5), Good & Plenty (I'm not even sure if this one is acrylic or bone, but they only made 2), and Black Stag (2). So you see, I'm kind of up against it for completion, but . . . hope springs eternal! :)

I was just able, after saving my dollars for a while, to order a 53 Cuban stockman from 2008 with stag and stainless (love that acorn shield!).

A great thing about the 53/54 is that there are still a lot of great ones out there for sale. They don't seem to instantly disappear like some other patterns I could name. ;)

I first heard about the Furtaker Muskrat on a rimfire website in the hunting forum. Soon I had a muskrat of my own and my own little GEC collection was off to the races. :)

18 months ago, I fell victim to a unique disease. 18 months ago, I walked into the GEC factory and received a personal tour from Ms. Tucker along with my father (Case brand nut) and my Uncle from Meadville. We had visited Case the day before and Queen followed later in the day. Well after the tour we visited the "store". Mr. Howard was like a kid at Christmas trying to get a peek at what we had chosen from the store display cases. I told Mr. Howard I couldn't make up my mind, but that I liked that one right there. He said that is a very nice knife. I had chosen a copperhead jigged bone TK Cuban. My introduction to GEC, and this disease of traditionalknifeism, led me to find and identical one-a user, that I carry almost daily. As for my first GEC, I take it out, clean it, and wonder how I avoided such disease for so long. I love the large equal end cigar and have many configurations. My latest two-actual birth knives for both of my boys (see let's talk GEC if you want to know more). Jeff actually provided the Yellow Rose Cattle Baron from his collection of 50 +. Thanks Jeff!!!!

Holy cow, that would be quite an accomplishment if you could get the whole set!:thumbup::thumbup:
Good luck in your continued search, Jeff; I sure hope you can track 'em all down! :D

I had not considered a 53/54 but picked this one up in a multi-knife trade here on BF. The Cripple Creek was made by GEC and is a fantastic knife. I had planned this to be a catch and release but haven't been able to bring myself to part with it.

Lovely stag on the CC kenspen.

And Josh, that Baron looks waaaaay better next to those handsome young'uns than it ever did around me!

I caved in and ordered a #53 today, after reading this thread. The crazy part is that PayPal put a hold on my payment, saying that they have to comply with 'government regulations'. I'm seriously wondering if the word Cuban in the description part triggered this. Thankfully the dealer is holding the knife for me, but this is seriously frustrating. I'll post a picture when I get it..... hopefully not too long from now!

Baseball season's right around the corner - hot dogs, pretzels...I may need to pick up a tk Cuban in mustard jigged bone...
Go Giants!

Wow, Ken, that is a gorgeous specimen!!:thumbup:

How does it happen that I'm just minding my own business, blissfully unaware of a particular knife pattern, and then, out of nowhere and for no apparent reason, that pattern suddenly grabs me by the throat, I see them everywhere, and I can't stop looking at them??:eek::confused: Is this what they call Love (or at least Lust)? :D

Draggat - After 2Dead put me onto my oldest SON'S birth knife (NOS still at a dealer) paypal put a hold on that transaction as well. I've never had this happen before with probably one hundred transactions. The dealer said he had never had it happen either. It took a few days to clear. And they don't re-notify the dealer. The dealer has to go in themselves and verify the payment cleared.

Anyone else experience this when buying a #53 Cuban?

Thanks Rockon. I will keep checking. Whatever would we do without Big Brother checking up on us?!

BTW- The story of how you got your knives is a real show of the good heartedness of this community. Glad you were able to find them and I'm glad another member stepped up to help you!

Draggat - whatever happened with your paypal - sale - pending predicament? Anyone else have this happen? Anyone with a pattern other than than the word "cuban" in the description?
Thx
Josh
