Talk me out of a new mini-grip 556-1 (or into)

I am about to order a mini grip 556-1 with the CPM -20 CV steel, G-10 scales and deep pocket clip. For me the scales and deep pocket clip are worth the extra cash the blade steel is a bonus. As a lefty the Axis lock is superb, blade length is right wear I want it for a EDC and the excellent BM warranty is a plus. Any reason not to get one? is there something of equal or better value? 3.25" would be the biggest blade I would want to carry just for normal city use, work in a office so no heavy duty use.

Get it, SO worth it for all the reasons you listed and moren

Super smooth, one of the best steels around IMO, and it's a mini grip, with g10...i talked myself into one before it was even released, but I have too many grips and knives in general right now.

If there was a good reason not to get one, it would have been mentioned.
Enjoy the fruits of your labor and quit stalling on getting the knife you want.

I have both the 556-1 and the 551-1. I'm not completely in love with the 556-1 because of the size. My hands are on the smaller end of medium and I find the 556-1 too small. Whether or not this is your first grip, I recommend you get your hands on one; They're slimmer than the non-1 models, so naturally they'll fit smaller in the hand than those models. I ended up getting the 551-1 anyway and even though it's a bigger blade, the G10 color really diffuses the intimidation factor of a bigger blade.

I haven't ventured into the griptillians yet, but wanted to recommend the mini barrage. I have a 586 that is de-assisted and I feel with the full liners it is better made knife with M390 steel. I used to prefer assisted, but the 586 is pretty slick without it. Feels like a higher quality knife. Also it can be had for around the street price of the 556-1.

I don't like Benchmade knives. I don't like the pricing, and most of their designs generally don't excite me*, however the Griptilian is, or should be, on the "Icon List" of EDC knives. A Grip or Mini-Grip will do whatever needs doing in any sort of daily carry situation, and most outdoors situations as well. If you like the shape, and can find one for a price you agree with, absolutely get one. My personal preference would be the Sheepsfoot blade.

I mean, a Grip is like...it's like a Spyderco Delica, or a Kershaw Leek/Skyline, or a Buck 110. Great knife, really.

*Understand, that I am not saying they're crap knives. I think Benchmade makes a quality product, just nothing that makes me reach for my wallet.

One counterpoint. You list two good reasons for it (g10 scales, clip) - but you can get a deep carry clip for free from benchmade anytime.
You mention the blade steel is bonus but not necessary...

So one other consideration is to get a regular mini-grip, and then add custom scales from one of the great craftsman on the forum. Different colors of g10, micarta, cf, etc. Add a deep carry clip directly from benchmade (I will even send you a spare if you prefer). I think the price may end up within $10 either way.

Mini-Grip 556-1 is ordered should be here Monday. This will be my second BM first one is a Mini auto Presidio 5500 BK which I really like.

Congrats. I looked hard and long (um, bad choice of words) at the full size sheepsfoot version. I ended up getting a Spyderco Domino at a price I couldn't resist, but I still like the upgraded scales and steel.

My problem is that every Benchmade I've owned had to go in for warranty work almost immediately. Combined with the inflated prices, I find it hard to justify, and worry about the f&f.

Wish there was a store I could handle one of these, to know what I'm getting is good.

Awesome knife, but still overpriced IMO. Quality consistency is still lacking big time from BM. If you get a good one they are awesome knives if you are ok with the price.

Is pladeplay the problem here or other things? Please specify!

Bladeplay, centering, and bad grinds have been my issues with BM. I still own plenty of them though, never buy them but I'll trade for them if the deal is right because they are very solid knives.

I was going to say that I would talk you out of the mini and to get the full size because . . . well . . . it's full size and not mini.

Seeing that you really like the blade length and work in an office sounds like the mini is the way to go though.

I can't say enough good things about my Ritter with M390; great purchase. Kind of fills up the top of my pocket but I would not change the handle shape; in use it is what I want.
