Talk me out of buying a small Sebenza

I recently posted on this topic.

I think they are too expensive for a tool that can be lost. They are a luxury item, and I am not rich.

Yet, I find them sexy. And I desire one. In the same manner that when you were a child, you desired an item you saw in a store. Common sense out the window, I want one.

$350 bucks for a knife? Someone talk me out of this.

Currently my EDC blade is a mini D2 griptilian.

Okay I will talk you out of a small Sebenza. Get a large Sebenza. You will never regret it. It was the best $385 I ever spent. Case closed.

Probably the wrong forum to have somebody talk you OUT of a Sebenza. Here is my take on it.

I agree with you on the "too expensive to lose" aspect. I personally try to keep my EDC blade under $100 for that purpose.

I have thought about saving my pennies for a Sebenza, but on my limited (see enlisted service member base pay scale for that one) budget, there are A LOT of things competing for my money, especially almost $400 of it. There are a lot of things(and I don't just mean one thing, I mean large combinations) that I would like to purchase for $400.

Whenever I consider purchasing something with a big price tag, I ask myself "Is there anything else that I would rather buy with this money?". In the case of the Sebenza, the answer is yes (for right now).

At the end of the day, it's your coin, but that is just my take on it.

life is short, why carry a bad knife? someone said it some time ago, I'm trying it
my EDC now is a TK3 in bone

Get 95% (99%?) of the knife and save $200 and buy a Spyderco Sage 2. Plus you won't get a under hardened S30V blade with the Spyderco.

I should like the Sebenza based on looks but I have absolutely no desire to buy one. S30V isn't my favorite (especially at 57 rockwell), frame locks aren't high on my list of locks, and you are paying a lot for a name. I like the profile but that is about it.

Edit: It looks like they are now being hardened to 58-59 which is not under hardened although I do think that 57 is on the soft side for a folder and would personally want 60. A couple points doesn't sound like much but on a log scale like the Rockwell hardness is, it is actually quite a big jump.

I have a large, and while it is an extremely nice knife, I am not particularly overwhelmed by it in any way.

It cuts the same as many of my other knives, and I almost never carry it.

That said, every time I tell myself that I need to sell it to someone that will use it...I handle it and change my mind.

At any rate, if you get one and do not like it, you can sell it at a very minimal loss.

first off, dont limit yourself to MSRP. search on the forum find them for a lot cheaper

second, it has high F&F, very easy to take apart, if breaks CRK will fix it, you can refinish it if you like, great blade shape, great pocket clip.

and for the people that think it is too soft they haven't used one, the steel really performs well.

I would not say a BM mini grip is a bad knife.

To the OP, I do not have a Sebbie, but have been in the same boat as you. I thought long and hard about dropping that kind of cash on a knife that face it just cuts stuff right? I have an Alias I and love it. I could not justify spending $400 on a knife. When you get in the $400 range you are talking about some decent guns. I would rither have a nice gun for that $400 than a knife.

I was wondering when a fanboy would show up.:cool:

Listen up all Sebenza owners!!!!
Did you stop buying folders after getting a Sebenza? I mean, if it´s the best, what should you get after a Sebenza? Another one?

What I´m trying to say is that I think you will get bored even with a Sebenza, and after a few months (or weeks or days) you will start looking for another folder. The Sebenza is probably a very good knife, but you can get almost as good, or even better knives for half that price.

And would you really use a 400 dollar knife? It could get scratches and it can go dull (and if you sahrpen it it will lose half the market price).

You can get hell of a good knife for $150!!

How am I being a fanboy? In fact just you saying that pretty much labels you as a CRK fanboy, god forbid someone actually suggests a knife other than a Sebenza. I'm not blinded by a brand name like many are and just offering a high quality alternative at a fraction of the price and doing what he asked, giving him reasons why it is not the greatest purchase.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Give me a break  Anyone whose opinion is different from yours is now a fanboy? And the people saying that you absolutely MUST own a $300 folder to truly have lived are NOT fanboys?

In my eyes, if I'm spending $300 on a knife, a Sebenza would be one of the last places I'd spend it. Honestly, I doubt I'd spend that much on a folder period.

For that kind of money you can get a fantastic fixed blade, whether a Busse or a custom from any one of a number of phenomenal makers on these boards. You can probably get a custom folder too, if that's your bag, but you'd have to ask someone who is into custom folders because they aren't my thing.

In case you didn't notice, all the CRK fanboys were already here. Someone else is just putting out a legitimate opinion.....

Get a XM-18, definitely a step up from the Sebenza.

Not at all. The XM-18 is not a step up, it's a step sideways. A completely different knife and shouldn't be compared with a Sebenza. While the Sebenza prizes simplicity the XM-18 is a lesson in overbuilding.

Actually I'm quite happy with my Umnumzaan and Sebenza. I don't really feel the need to have another knife.

Can't carry my Military that much simply due to where I'm living.

Have you owned a Sebenza? Where did the under hardened crap come from? The guy already has a Grip and you are telling him a Sage is 98% of a Sebenza. I recommended a Sebenza based on my experience with one. Do I own different knives? Absolutely! As a knifenut I own Spyderco, Benchmade,Al Mar,Busse, CRK, Emerson ,Case, Dozier and more plus a few customs. What do I carry the most? The Sebenza. I think it is worth the money and then some.
