seems the best of both worlds: old-school shape, new-school steel...

I know the real production numbers aren't really out there, but can someone in the know take an educated guess as to how many SHBMs in INFI are out there, and what the key variations of them are (bolts vs tubes, handle materials, etc). it would be greatly appreciated if you'd share your knowledge and photos.

also, are there any known instances of folks getting something from the Custom Shop in recent times with an SHBM shape but in INFI with modern handle options? seems I've seen some relatively recent Custom Shop knives with old-school shapes, but I don't remember seeing a new SHBM.

I can see my post could be interpreted two ways. I meant that all BM's are INFI.

If you found one in a different steel you would be a special lad . . . holding a fake Busse. :D

The world may never know!! I prefer the 1/300 smooth handle slotted bolts and the basic series the best.

The mistress was introduced when Jerry came out with INFI...
So all SHBMs are made of INFI.

Here's the article introducing both... American Survival Guide - March 1998.

I'll dig up a good SHBM history thread in a second...

Here's a good thread where Cobalt takes a stab at the early SHBM timeline...

SHBM Age

I have been studying SHBM lineage and have gone through the process.of trying to age them. the following is only for production run knives as the custom shop knives can come in any config, and I hope that Andre can verify this, along with SHSH masters Randucci and Mulder since I am sure the SHSHII went along the same handle changes. Enjoy:

97-98 SHBM with smooth handle slabs and smooth bolts or slotted bolts
these are the oldest of the SHBM's. Probably the first 50 -100 had these handles I am guessing. LE#37 had them and the 1 of 6 I use to have had them also but with slotted bolts.

97-98 SHBM with partially grooved handle slabs slotted screws
most of these were slotted screws but I have had a few with hollow rivets. Arguably the most desirable SHBM handle

97- 98 - SHBM with fully grooved handle slabs and slotted screws

98-99 SHBM with partially grooved handle and hollow rivets

99 - SHBM with fully grooved handle slabs and hollow rivets
The most common SHBM handle.

mid 99 - SHBM with angle grooved micarta handles and hollow rivets
this is near the end of the SHBM production run and were not very common. I have not see coated SHBM's with this handle but I have a few uncoated ones with this handle. Probably the rarest of all handles that I have noticed.

the end - SHBM with diamond quilted micarta handles like the E-handles.

Since the SHBM production run went from late 1997 to late 1999, all these handle options had to be in that time frame.

In this first picture you will notice the different handles smooth, partially grooved and all grooved with slotted and hollow rivets. The fully grooved slotted is a 1 of 300, so it appears that in slotted handles all or partial grooves is not an age determinant. The hollow rivet handle is all grooves, but I have another one which is partially grooved and I think it is earlier than this one.

Now here comes the next pic. In this one you will notice all three knives are Angle Grooved Micarta. One is LE #236 and the other Two are Factory Bead Blasted. All three had to have been made near the same time. The Two bead Blasted SHBM's are identical and are part of the 12 bead Blasted SHBM's done in factory. I say Bead Blasted, because I am sure Double Cut term did not exist then. All three of these knives had to be near te end of the SHBM production run.

Now, the next Handle, I do not have but I know it exists. And that is an SHBM with a diamond Quilted Micarta handle pattern. That had to be the last one of the SHBM runs and I have no clue how many were made, but I have heard of at least two. Anyone have a picture.:D

A few more pics of the two Article BMs...
Just cuz they look soooooo good! :D

This is the WASP SHBM... first INFI to go out for a feild test, and sparked Ron Hoods interest in doing the article.
WASP stands for Wilderness Advanced Survival Program which was instructed by Ron.

Also sporting a Rockwell hardness of 65.

As for your last question about recent SHBMs...

Yes there are a few... one or two have popped up at shows & ganzas over the past couple of years... but I don't have any pics of them.

This one... I ordered thru the custom shop. 14 or 15 months for delivery IIRC correctly.
The other two I have on order from the same time are still on order... I think we're approaching 3 years on them now.

Awesome stuff, Foo! It's always good seeing those 3 originals.

That custom shop BM is gorgeous, too. Are the ones still on order also SHBMs?

Thanks. :)

And yes... they are SHBMs.
Both satin, one with G-Rex style ironwood burl on black G-10 and mosic pins   ....
And the other is :foot: :foot:

:D ;)

Wow, I think you're trying to catch up with Mulder's Badger count!

Thanks.

I have corrected the SHBM time line several times now, usually right after Cobalt's old post gets quoted.

Production went to 2001.

I think that Foo does have the very best SHBM's/Busse History Knives, those are the knives that got me interested in Busse in the first place.

And the production run didn't start until 98 or 99, didn't it?

The three pre production releases are from early 97, but the article came out in 98...
then they were available for order... and began shipping in 99 or something like that.

I recall the janitor telling me there were no other BMs out and about, when the article came out, and for a while after that too.
