I would really love to have one of those some day.
Great "blind" birds beak detail to set them apart from the rest.

Congrats on a great piece RG!
Nice to see her used.

Well, you probably have some trade fodder. :foot:

IIRC, Cobalt let another one get away from him.

does the shop still have these 1/300 blanks for customers to purchase for custom knives? if so, how much?

Not that I know of.

IIRC, the janitor found an old box that had the three 1/300 blanks in it..
Found somewhere in the back corners of the compund, under a pile of empty JWB bottles.

Here is what you need, a true BM proto, the BBSHBM! That is what Jerry called the second knife down....

Is it considered mental to lick the computer screen? :o

Randucci! Your just plain mean! :p

WOW!

You're giving me the BBSHBM Proto?!?!? :)

Thanks Ducci!!! :D :D :p

J/K. I would really love to have that one... more than the 1/300 blind BBSHBM.
But I don't think you'd ever let me pry it from your hooves. :grumpy:

Mine is the bottom one....though this picture is before the majority of its use. Haven't had time to snap any new ones....that'll have to change ;)

Here's my other two favorite big choppers...a Bill Siegle Borong and a HI Boomerang (I hand worked and polished a zero, hair scarin edge on it...it's a mean mutha in a small package).

Wow, this is an interesting thread.
Blades from that time do look magically beautiful and attractive.

Here is the idea for the Boss HOG, how about the continuation of the BOSS series and give this oldie modern touch-up. (Hint) :D:D:D

Jeremy needs to post a pic of his Jungle SHBM that Ban reworked. Ban took the teeth out of the primary edge, lightening the knife substantially (carbon fiber scales too), and put a very sharp convex edge on it. That is one fast SHBM now

Here's my meager collection as of today:

No dought the SHBM is a good knife but IMO they are overrated. Just as the genIII handles are overrated. They dont do it for me. I would much rather have a fusion handled bm than a SH bm any day. I LOVE the fusion handle with smooth mag micarta grips, to me it is perfect.

Its all a matter of opinion and this is mine but here is a nice SHBM that I just sold on the XC because it wasnt for me.

I will take the money that came from the sale of this SHBM and use it at Blade to hopefully purchase my grail Busse a Silent Knight, hopefully!!

Found one on an auction site a while back for a decent price. Never used it, but air chopping gave me the idea that it'd pinch my pinky. I ended up trading in because of the value. Hard to bring myself to use such an expensive knife. I'm reconsidering that after buying and beating on the AK:D Maybe, its a North Kakalaki thing...

I believe he has re-visited the Battle Mistress...
Once with the Ergo line, and now with the Fusion Battle Mistress. :p :D

Seriously though... it is a matter of preference really. Me, I like the look and feel of the old school... but I also appreciate the Fusion handles too. Although they share the Mistress name, the SHBM and the FBM just have a different balance and weight to them. They are both great renditions of the Mistress.

One thing that I don't recollect anyone doing which would be interesting is a chop off/general task review between the various mistresses....

I don't know about others but I find the pursuit of the ideal knife...often distinguishing between the ideal Busse because of the varied options...to be something of tremendous fascination...perhaps those who have the necessary models might be interested??

The only thing that impacts for me is the "collectable high value" blades are a bit out of my league....but if you bought them from the company and have used them then it may not be an such an issue....what do you all think???

Here's a few thoughts:

A SHBM couldn't hang with some of the fusions in a chop-off.

If you are mainly interested in chopping, you'd be better off functionally and financially skipping the old school straight handles. (Yes, if you try to choke back you will get a very nice pinky blister before long.)

But some people think the SHBM is the ideal all arounder -- still chops pretty darn good, with the added benefit of a different balance for other chores, and oh man does it look nice :D. Obviously some of them had different heat treat methods and hardnesses that will affect performance, but that is a "try and see" point that only will become obvious with much use. It really is a great "big" knife, but not a dedicated chopper IMO.

Another example --- I always loved the BM-e even though it couldn't hang in a chop-off with a FBM. But the slimmer profile (especially a ZT) makes for an awesome all arounder when some chopping is likely.

Then there is the Rat Daddy, don't get me started on it's assets, great knife, but this is the Busse forum.

And when only a little chopping is expected, a Mofo is the best.

Etc...

I do love the SHBM too, but I'd grab the Rat Daddy or a FBM if I expect to do a ton of chopping. Lucky for me, I don't have to chop my way through most of the trails I travel :)

A little off topic question. How does the Zero Tolerance differ from the BM-E?

I'd sure like to own a SHBM, but don't think I could force myself to use such an expensive knife. :o

Well put Eli!

The SHBM is more compact and lighter so it is better at most of the smaller knife tasks than the FBM. For chopping, the FBM would win hands down... The fusion has a better handle for that as well.

But for me... chopping is only about 10% of what I will ask of my knife an your average trip in the woods (but I do like it just for fun too. :) ). But an SHBM will chop effectively when I need it to.

That is one of the reasons I sent my FBM recurve proto in for some mods, and it will most likely go back for a few more. I'm trying to get that "best of both worlds" from her. A blend of the old school and the new fusion, steel, and heat treat. Old school handle material, slight mods to handle shape, shorter blade, lighten it up, and shifting the balance. Hopefully, I (with Garths help :D) will get her there.

Edit to add: I know this is the Busse forum, but I do think the Swamp Rat M9 will be a good substitute for the SHBM... and at a very reasonable price I might add.

I had occasion to handle a Jungle SHBM variant, and the mods on it really turned it into a fast handling fighter.:cool:

If I were going to do a lot of chopping, I'd grab an Ax or a chainsaw!
