talk to me about SHBMs in INFI

A little off topic, but what does a stripped SHBM look like underneath? Are there a lot of INFI dimples?

Then there is the Rat Daddy, don't get me started on it's assets, great knife, but this is the Busse forum.

I have taken this advice sir!! And man, it is stellar!! Nice sheath too!:eek:

And when only a little chopping is expected, a Mofo is the best.

I agree 150%. Someday, I will get that Uncle back!! Either from you or Guy!! :p

Guy should give it back, he doesn't even love it, he keeps asking about a euro handled mofo :p

:D

Interesting posts so far on this....particularly if the modern heat treatment gives some advantages over the earlier knives....I have knives treated to a Rc of 64 and whilst they keep an edge a long time they are not easy to sharpen. That would be an important factor for me....one of the great benefits of Infi is the ease with which you can restore an edge....and at Rc 58 it still lasts a long while. The high 60's treats on the early knives would seem too high perhaps?

From my use I quite like the balance and feel of the NMFBM for large knife work and as an all rounder I find the FSH and NMSFNO to be about ideal....the Basic 9 is another good candidate but again you would need to make your mind up about altering a good classic to a "user"....personally if I am going to use that knife I would prefer to re-profile the blade to a full convex instead of an asymetrical edge. My FBM Satin combat finish often get's left out because it is heavier than the above three but not as effective as the NMFBM.....

After a long time using a Khukri though I think the Zilla may well tick all the boxes for me....I expect it to be as formidable as the NMFBM on chopping and limbing....but more able to do delicate tasks/fine work on the edge by the choil....which on a Khukri can be easily done to a finer and sharper angle....and not so easyily done on the NMFBM with it's straight blade. I am going to wait for one of these I think before I consider a large "sell off" to experience the beauty of a SHBM....but one day I would like to have one.

Old heat treat / INFI versus the newer stuff...
It's just my opinion on this, but I have to believe that a man with a quest for the perfect steel / heat treat would be constantly making tweaks along the way. But ya never know, day one INFI / heat treat may be the exact same as todays stuff.

As for high RC values and older blades... The 65 RC SHBMs I have were the first examples of INFI to go out in the field. I'm sure Jerry was testing what would be best for his new steel. He obviously thought an RC of 58 to 60 was better for the steel based on the abuse people put them thru. I understand, based on stories told, that the 65 RC SHBMs roll, bend and dent with the best of them... no chipouts the couple of times it would have happened. But... I don't think you'll catch me throwing one of them like Cobalt. :D

The recent BADs were RC'd at 62 IIRC. They do hold their edge better and are only moderately harder to sharpen IMHO.

I have rockwell tested knives and I have used knives, I have rockwell tested and used old knives, I have rockwell tested old knives and have gotton a suprise!!!

:D

I have enough love in my heart for at least two Uncles. :D

You should talk, how many were in your collection?

Lots of deep grind lines....lots o dimples....some at the top of the blade flat where you wouldn't think there'd be any. Ugly as a pile of bricks...and strangely beautiful :p

The dimples vary with how much scotch Jerry had the day he was finishing an SHBM?:D

All the knives come with dimples and the ones without them are just finished further. Like the LE's. Even the old FBM LE's which were tan coated did not have dimples because they were finished to a satin type finish prior to coating. Most of the CG coated blades had many dimples and it did not matter if it was INFI or A2 as they both had dimples. INFI just seemed to have a slightly higher concentration of dimples for some reason;)

now quit talking about SHBM's they are horrible knives and not worth a buck!!:D

A little off topic question. How does the Zero Tolerance differ from the BM-E?

Thinner, and has a saber grind with a swedge. (instead of a full flat grind) I think they were all satin finished as well, except for the coated ones sold in an extraavaganzaaaaaa a while back.
