I got my Talonite sample in the mail today. Anybody up for a fun little contest? I was thinking about posting pics of the mini knife you made from your sample piece. I will furnish a prize for the winning entry. I know not everyone has their samples yet, so we will need to figure out a deadline if anyone is interested.

Just a thought...

That is a good idea too! I don't want to steal Peter Atwood's idea, but this would make a great "pry baby".

I'm sure that I'll be sent packing after going up against those who know what they're doing, but I'll take a try at it. Working only with hand tools, I'll have plenty of time to think about what I'm doing and not screw it up too badly!!! I'll have to go and buy a few extra files to replace the ones I ruin.

I might be up for that. Got mine yesterday. Thanks again Tom.

Course, might wanna give it like a 3 month deadlien for those tryign to work this stuff wtih files, etc. ;)

I am on "the list" for a sample. Luckily I have 2 36 grit, 2x42 belts coming my way today! I'll be armed and ready to try out talonite.

Oh, what exactly is the size we'll be getting? is is 1" by 2"?

I think they will vary a bit Crayola as they are scraps, but mine is about 1" X 2".

Depending on when the deadline for the contest is, I'd be interested.

I hate to say this...............but HAND TOOLS are not going to do it.

If you dont have some carbide bits and some exotic ceramic belts you are going to become extremely frustrated trying to fashion TALONITE into anything beyond the simple square you receive in the mail!!! :( :(

Tom is right. Hand tools will not work. I have a new found respect for anybody that works with this stuff. Two hours in the shop last night and I was barely able to get the profile shaped the way I wanted it.

Something else I didn't know about Talonite. It is non magnetic and it creates a heck of a spark pattern.

To any makers who use Talonite on a regular basis, my respect goes out to you. I completely understand the price difference between Talonite and other steels.

ive got some carbide bits, and some aluminum oxide discs......

im in guys!!!

once i get my sample that is

I would not make a Prybaby from Talonite. It is too soft. I think Peter was correct to use S30V.

I tried to cut Talonite on the same bandsaw we use to cut all our titanium. I spent $400 in replacement parts to get the bandsaw working again.

Asked the Tom Mayo (the Talonite Master) how to cut Talonite and he said "abrasive cutoff wheel". It works great.

I had no problem grinding my sample on a six inch bench grinder with a regular coarse wheel. If some one can host them for me I email picks of what I came up with for my sample.
Thanks
Patrick

Got my sample today, thanks Tom! If you had printed that letter in your post you probably would not have givin away as many samples! Glad I read it though so I did not mess up any of my tools, this should be fun.

I've made some progress with my piece, but even with power tools it is no easy task! This talonite is tough stuff!

I'm in, but it will take me a few months. (I am working on graduating and it is gonna be an uphill battle. )
