Talonite sample knife contest...

got mine yesterday also, thanks tom!

this stuff is amazing, and hell to work with, you guys werent' kidding!

finally, i've got the basic shape down.

i have no idea how i'm going to put an edge on this thing though :(

this stuff is very nice though! so smoooooooooth...

Approximately 4 hours into this project and I have a basic shape, another 1/8" to go then I'll put an edge on it, then I'll try to put some kind of handle/scale on it, hopefully I'll have pics next week, I'm working on this at work during lunch, they all think I'm knutz, knife knutz that is.

Where's everyone else at this point?

Doin' all the rough work on a 2"X42" belt grinder at work, I went through 4 120 grit belts already.

I love the way this stuff finishes, smooth, and it's kinda nice grindin' and not havin' to worry 'bout burnin' my fingers.

This stuff just takes a long time to work, now I can understand the high prices commanded for finished knives.

still waiting for mine. I've got a feeling my dremel tool is in for some serious abuse.

Here's a shot of what I got so far, I went with simplicity, the only things I want to add are a set of scales, a cut out for opening beer bottles, and a hole for a key ring.

Still have to make a sheath.

I like that! I keep staring at mine trying to picture it as something? Paul

Thanks, I call it Thumbthingelse.

It's nice that it takes so long to work it, you can catch any screw ups before it gets too far.

As far as design, I traced the outline a couple of times on a piece of graph paper than I drew about 5 variations inside the template, I decided to go with the simplest design requiring the least amount of grinds.

I liked my claw, and thumb dagger desighns best, but after starting to grind I went with the least amout of material removal,(Yeah I took the easy way out, but than I may only have 2 more weeks of work and use of the shop equipment before I get laid off.:( )

Since you only get 2 weeks before you get laid off why dont you wear out their machines on Talonite?

Dont worry, I am nearing the 1/2 way point on mine. I am gonna be bogged down the next 2-3 weeks with school winding up. It's coming down to the wire this semester.

I'm slowly making progress with mine. :)

What sort of bit do you need to drill Talonite? Should I run the drill at a high speed or low speed? It seems that I should run it slow so I don't melt the bit.

I'd try a slow speed and a drill press, lots of lubricant, this stuff is so wear resistant and dissipates heat so poorly it would take the hardness right out of the bit from overheating.

I drilled mine with a solid carbide drill bit in a hand drill. Worked out just fine, but still took a nice long time.
