Talonite sample knife contest...

I'm with you PWork, I keep looking at it and turning it around and just can't seem to see the knife yet...plus after all these posts I'm afraid it's going to beat me!

I took a 4" hand grinder and was able to grind it a bit today. I didn't have much time but wanted to see if I could at least grind some of it. I was able to take some off so I'm optimistic that I will be able to take more off this way than manually.

Come on guys, trace it out on a piece of paper and see what blade shapes fit.

If your real adventurous it's the perfect size for an OSS Lapel Dagger

What do you have to lose? It's only a piece of metal, and it was free.

I'm not making a knife, rather an arrow head shape. Maybe try and drill a hole in it too. We'll see how it goes ...... should be fun messing around with it anyway.

I traced it out a couple of days ago but have been too busy to work on it. I'm hoping some time this week to at least start.

Yeah, I thought about the thumb dagger. I could really use a key ring bottle opener but I don't want to waste Talonite on that. If I can't come up with a suitable single edge design, I'll make a dag out of it.

just finished mine.

i ended up chucking an abrasive cutoff wheel into my lathe, then using a whole bunch of clamps to secure the piece to my toolholder.
as a result of this ghetoo setup, the results aren't quite as good as what they could have been had i used real tools, but i'm fairly happy with it anyway.

i use the abrasive cutoff wheel to make the cuts too. before doing this, the talonite was so smoooooth that it was almost impossible to hold. this provides an excellent grip, and i think it looks pretty cool too.

i really hope this contest can be split up into 2 different contests...those who have made knives before and those who havent :green:

unfortunately, i can't get a real sharp edge on it :( but the shape is really useful for detailed work, which is what i designed it for.
very ergonomic if i might say so myself :D

please disregard my thumb, i had a little run-in with the disc sander a couple years back...luckily it grew back.

i think i'll call it the snail :D

also, a couple glamor shots:

I've learned a major lesson with the the design and making of a small blade, #1 Bigger blades are easier to make. #2 make sure the shape you grind can be easily sharpened using conventional methods. It all looks great on paper, till ya try to sell it to your steel.(I had some grandios visions, I just had to work within' my limitations.)

I'm glad I tried, it was an excecise in design, and implementation, I learned a lot, and it was an improvement over my last knife from scratch.

All in all a win win situation, Thanks for the opportunity.

if cavemen had talonite, this is what their knives would have looked like :D

daffy duck? i kind of see it i think....

i had an awesome fish design, but no way i could have ever made it :(

Hrm, try the links again. I just took off the .orig.jpg

Did you just try to copy and paste the links? If so, that doesn't work. The actual link is too long so it was shortened when I posted them.

working now, very nice! :D
Thanks. The texture on yours is really neat. I was planning on doing something like that as well, but figured I'd probably mess something up, so I didn't do it, lol.

Is it possible for me to get a Talonite scrap?!! I really want to try and make something!

there was a post on it a little while ago, i'm not sure if he's still doing it, but maybe...
try doing a search for talonite by tom mayo, that should lead you to the thread :)
