Hi guys! I am an avid spyderco fan and my two spyderco military g10/ti m4 and my manix 2 dlc are my favorite knives....and i am anxiously awaiting the spyderco TUFF.(really want to try 3v)

BUT!!! During my buying and selling of spydies i started looking at other companies and figuring out what i really want in a folder....strider, buck, DPX hest, etc. I want to know what you guys think are the best TANK folding knives. please keep the knives current or recently released(also soon to be released as far as next year). I've been looking at blade steel, thickness, blade shape, handle material, locks, etc. Is there a great production tank folder out there, or do i need to go custom? If custom, who would you recommend? Thank you veyr much guys for helping me reach my goal!!!

and before i get a sarcastic answer about a fixed blade, i am not interested in carrying a fixed blade as i may at times be around non knife friendly people.

For production knives, anything by Strider (especially the SMF, AR, or GB) or ZT (especially the 0200 or 0300).

For customs, Andrew Demko (although I remember hearing that he recently closed his books to new orders until he reduces his backlog a bit).

Another production knife to consider would be the Lion Steel SR-1 (thick blade, handle machined out of a single piece of titanium).

Anyone have the contact information for andrew demko? I looked at his stuff and WOW am I impressed.

Lol.... been using that for a while trying to find the perfect one for me, why do you think I posted.

Fair enough, I would suggest the coldsteel tri-ad lock folders. If you want something higher end material-wise than Zt.Also I heard the ontario retribution 1 is a tank and the Xm1.

ZT 0200 is a very carryable knife that is think, massively overbuilt, has great ergos, 154CM blade steel, and an excellent warranty. the price is also very reasonable.

Greetings:

I'd echo Neuron's recommendation for the Lion Steel SR-1 (I have no doubt the other knives mentioned are stout as hell as well but I don't have any of them). The SR-1 is a colossal chunk of tankhood.

Allen Elishewitz also makes (or made?) a custom knife actually named "Tank." I believe he stated that the flipper folder he designed for Hogue's next production knife is modeled after it.

Cheers,
Isaeus

Three Sisters Forge "The Beast", its custom its 300.00 bucks and the most solidly built folding knife I've seen in quite sometime.

If the price doesn't scare you I would have recommend taking a look at the Chris Reeve Umnumzaan. It's a tank!

The toughest folder still isn't as tough as a good fixed blade...

Keep in mind, with most "tank" folders there is a trade off. Yes, you have what feels like a nice solid & sturdy knife, but some can't cut well at all. The same thing that makes them desireable, also creates a new set of concerns. These knives are also considerably heavier. Some people will adamantly complain for days because a knife is 5 ounces bulky. For everyday cutting tasks, it's pretty hard to beat a knife that was specifically designed with that in mind.

That about covers it nicely. I would add the XM-18 and XM-24 to the list though. ;)
