Tanto 7 users, what are your experiences?

Yeah, it's been a while. Lots of personal stuff keeping me busy... some of it damn tragic. I've seen Rolf around the boards posting, but have not directly spoken to him in a while... too long, actually.

Are you considering a 7? I've eyed the regular size for a long time, but went with the Super 7 because it actually is closer in size to the other "regulars" that Emerson makes. Truly an iconic blade... and it works. Period.

I bought mine from USAMADEBLADE.com -- a member here; he goes by Whitty on the boards, his name is Scott. I asked him about the lock-up, blade centering, etc... and he not only emailed me back details promptly, he took pics of the exact knife I'd buy and sent them via email. If you are looking to buy and avoid some of the issues you had in the past, his outfit might be a good route.

Good luck to you--keep'em sharp brother.

Anthony

Awesome. Thx for the suggestion.

I haven't been around much either. Life is crazy busy and these days I'm a little more into using my knives and less into talking about them. A trip to General Discussion reminded me why. This subforum is about the one of the few I care to visit anymore. Glad I have you guys around for questions.

I'm sorry to hear about your real, actual problems.
Smoke and prayers.

Yes, I'm considering a 7B. Love my 7A. I have found "MY" knife in it and want backups.

The B blade is the icon, and price and impatience (availability) are factors, so I'm taking those as a reason to step out of my comfort zone. A risky one, since I absolutely detest tantos.

It's strange how subtleties can completely change things tho. For some reason I LUST after the 6. So much, that if I ever got one, it would be my EDC forever and I'd use the piss out of it. If Ernest had kept the 7 blade identical to the 6, it would be a done deal. The swedge is what does it. The 6 blade is sooooooooo SEXY. Well, so is the handle. . .

So weird. Small things.

Take care.

If you really dig the look of the 6 blade, check out the Bulldog and Big Bulldog.

Not that the 7 isn't sexy too:

Wow. OK I'll give you that. Nice shot.

Things have a way of looking different in pictures. I might like it in hand.

I agree on the bulldog blade. I like the 7 handle alot, which is the only reason I'm even considering a tanto.

Thanks for the smoke and prayers... A very good man passed recently; he raised me, was better to me than my parents, and he died in my arms. Too many more details for such a venue, but thanks for the well wishes.

As for tantos, I think the trick is to just use them like any other blade; don't get caught up on the angles or second point... Or in this case, the chisel grind. I've come to prefer tantos and clip points. Drop / spear points work great, but aesthetically just don't do it for me quite as much.

Happy hunting!

Obliged.

Honestly my biggest hurdle is aesthetics, with a little nausea from mall-ninjary and Kool-aid parrots thrown in.

A blade is a blade.

May time pass fast over your loss, Aias. Heal soon.

The bulldog has about the best ergos of any Emerson I've owned/held . Mines for sale for other reasons not anything to do with the knife .

Where is Rolf ? Get in here before I haft to send emails...

Hi gang!
The CQC7B is the only knife I'd ever need. Period.
I do not use one as a kitchen knife, tho.
Let us know what you get.

Hello Rolf!

If you own an "A" for comparison, why do you prefer the "B?" Thoughts?

Thx for chiming in!

I also forgot to ask, but are you right handed? Aias, if you see this, what about you?

I found it a bit hard to cut through cardboard with. My horseman did a way better job

Really? Not me, my regular 7 (tanto non-V) is like a utility knife with a fresh razor blade in cardboard. I just got done (mis)using a cheap Delta tablesaw to dado some pressure treated 2X4's, and the 7 made an excellent way to shave off the straggler's I missed with the table saw. I was amazed by how efficiently it performed that task. The more I get used to the capabilities of the chisel + tanto, the more I like it. I tried to like the 7 three different times in the past, in mini, regular and super, and didn't - but for some reason my hands now love the iconic seven grip.

I've used my jungle 7 for opening mail, packages and yes, even veggie prep. It spreads peanut butter well. Thicker veggies it doesn't work as well as a FFG chefs knife, but no biggie. I occasionally carve barrel plugs when cerakoting stuff at work, and it works very well for that.

my super 7 passes through cardboard as if it was not there... YMMV

Hi Anthony!
I just like the chisel ground blade and it's history. But, I could EDC a spearpoint and be just as happy. That EKI 154CM is some good stuff!

Hey Rolf! It's been too long my friend. I like the chisel ground blade as well... so easy to maintain and such a great general utility blade. Now, I love clip points--especially on my fixed blades and traditionals, but for an all around edc, it is hard to beat EKI's 7 blade profile. I'd love to see a super 7 flipper as well.

Hey guys. I ordered an A wave since I already know for sure I love it, and the entire original plan was to have a duplicate for backup anyway.

I just wanted to check in, and say thanks for selling me on the B. I'm actually going to get one at some point, because of your input.

You've helped me get past the first step in my tanto hatred.

When funds free up, I'll let you know when I have the B!

Thanks again.

My A Wave came today.

No adjustment required, sharp as hell, solid lockup, and gorgeous, of course.

Even better than my first one. Mine doesn't have all the grease in it that I'm used to seeing tho, which is actually a plus. I like it without.

Now, to gently sand somma that EVIL off the pocket shredding G10.
