$tarmate, what's up with the price?

Why don't you use your years of manufacturing, design, financial experience running a highly successful and innovative company and work it out yourself. If you knew as much about Spyderco as they knew about their customers you would know they do their best to keep prices down.
Maybe you could have a go at reproducing either of the knives at a lower cost, until then you should probably bite your tongue, or look elsewhere for a knife that offers more for less, good luck with that.

I appreciate the other side of the coin, that members have written about. I do not appreciate the negative ones with harsh undertones however..

Example; Benchmade 810 Contego 150 dollars, or less. M4 Steel, axis lock, aggressive milled g-10. Made in the USA.

If you view the product as a poor value, and since that is apparently of high decision making priority..........just get a different stinking knife. SHEESH.

The Manix2 XL can be had all over for at or less than $105, the original Manix2 is right around $75. Lots of good value priced options out there. ;)

Starmate would cost 289$ + shipping if bought online in Europe.
In a Brick & mortar store it would be much more.

Spyderco is becoming to expensive for some, certainly with the current economic depression in Europe.
Look at these prices in euro: http://www.coltelleriacollini.com/spyderco/index.html

Unlike you all, I have a Starmate.

It is worth the price.

Price can be determined by comparative worth. The starmate gives equal or greater value than any other manufacturer's knife at the same price.

Price can also be determined by intrinsic value. The starmate again gives equal or greater value than any other manufacturer's knife at the same price. The fit/finish are top notch. The liners are thick and strong. The blade is symetetrically ground. It opens smoothly and with authority. You have 4 position choice in carry. There is a thick slab of premium steel, that unlike a lot of other strong knives can cut like a razor.

If you bitch about price, you are really saying your knife habit is becoming too big for your income.

I am a customer. I own several spyderco blades, with the intent to own more. I am part of their customer base. Without customers, they would not be getting a paycheck.

Please try and stay on topic.

Your choice if you want to keep on posting about it, but I don't think you passing on the Starmate will affect their paycheck one bit.
I don't think you starting this thread will get the price lowered, and there is nothing more anyone can say to help you out.

If you like the knife enough, than cost shouldn't be an issue. If cost is an issue, than you don't buy it.

THIS. It's not like there aren't a truckload of cheaper alternatives from Spyderco.
From what I've seen and heard, Spyderco is a very customer friendly business that stands behind their products, but they are still a business, first and foremost.

Not much has changed since the last one of these threads. Do some research and you can find out exactly why they cost what they do. You probably won't like it, but basically its because it is expensive to make. Should Spyderco make knives and charge what it costs to make them and not make any money? If they don't make money they will go out of business if you are really worried about their welfare. Spyderco uses a fixed pricing structure. So they mark the knife up a set percentage no matter where it is made. If a knife is expensive its because it was expensive to make and they make the same 10 percent profit margin (or whatever it is) as that Endura that is such a good deal. Shouldn't Spyderco be able to make some money for all their hard work?

Maybe instead of asking Sal why a knife is so expensive, you should ask your boss why you don't make more money. That at least involves you. I'm sure you wouldn't be getting harsh replies if your original post didn't have the same tone.

And just in case you haven't noticed, everything costs more these days. Not just luxury items like knives. The economy sucks, it is the world we live in for now.

Sal spoils us with the super steels. VG-10 is a great steel for folders but I tend to forget that sometimes myself when I have M390, etc to play with. I'm not sure if I will spring for a Starmate yet but it sure looks like the build quality is there. Can't wait to hear what people have to say about it when it ships.

Why does this Spyderco knife cost much more than other Spyderco knives made in Japan of similar construction and materials? I think it's a fair question. Examples would be the Lum Large Chinese and Lum Nishijin. Others with different locks like the Superleaf and Caly 3.5.

It's certainly worth what you paid for it, anyway. I doubt seriously, very seriously you'd have it if you'd had to pay for it!:D

Is it a sprint or regular production?
the latter
I thought that this is sprint. It was mentioned more than once that once model is discontinued, cannot be made again, unless it is sprint with some changes to compare with production. Of cause Starmate2 can be produced, but this one is Starmate. I checked 2012 Catalog and may be I missed, but I didn't find it among production or Sprints.

Pretty sure it's a regular catalog item http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=784

Compare that to, for instance, the damascus Caly 3, which is listed as a sprint http://www.spyderco.com/catalog/details.php?product=783

Wouter's page on it when it was still a proto also mentions it is production.
