Tarzan knife

Regardless of the knife; prop or otherwise.....they were great movies to a kid growing up in the 50's and 60's. And like Sean Connery as 007; Weismuller was THE Tarzan.

That was one of the best parts of my childhood . . . . Saturday mornings, Kellogg's, Oreo's, and Suzi (calm down, my boxer . . . :) ). Here's another one for everyone . . . . Anyone remember a series of books called "Bomba the Jungle Boy" ??? I remember being in grade school and my dad having a set of these in our living room on a bookcase from when HE was in grade school (30's-40's) . . . Esav ???
Be safe.

Johnny Weismuller variety,Tarzan.Anybody around here old enough to remember the wood handled fixed blade.I know he dispatched at least 3 crocs and one rather large shark with it.Just wonderin' if anyone remembers this knife? Was it a "prop",custom, production. Thanks! :D

I'm old enough to remember Johnny Weissmuller in the Tarzan movies, but unfortunately old enough not to remember much detail. Interested to see one though.
Here Tarzan, Jane, Boy and Cheetah. Tarzan hold knife. Me talk like Tarzan only for effect.

AMEN brother. And, as much as I like Jeff Bridges(new True Grit) as an actor, there is only one John Wayne.;)

What has been said before also goes for me; the Tarzan movies with Weissmuller were also my introduction to knives when i saw them as a 5 year old in 1970.

For anyone who wants to see Johnny Weissmuller in action as Tarzan in 1934, here is a link to the riverscene from the movie "Tarzan & his mate":

This topic is long out of date now, but here's a page that shows what is referred to as a copy of "one of Weismuller's knives," if anyone is still interested. Scroll down to the 5th picture. (Johnny must've had damn big hands to handle that thing!)

Somewhere on the official Edgar Rice Burroughs site, there's a replica of Weismuller's knife made by a custom knife maker (I can't remember who) but their archives are huge, and they don't have a "search" option.

Tarzan learned to protect his knife from rust by using baboon grease. This was illustrated in the episode where the carpet bagging cooking implement salesman, while demonstrating how to use cast iron skillets to the natives, grabbed the sarcastic and nearby baboon Ooni, and smeared his carcass around the inside of the pan to season it.

Even though this is a zombie thread its great. I grew up watchin tarzan as a kid in the 60s and at one time I had every single tarzan movie made on vhs. My mom caught a several day marathon one year and taped and labeled all of them for me. The original tarzan was a silent film and during a fight with a semi tame lion which got out of control the actor actually fought and killed the lion with his knife. At least that is the legend as i remember it. Elmo Lincoln was the actor in the 1918 tarzan of the apes. I've seen that movie and it was a pretty serious struggle with the lion.

It must have been some very early high-tech stainless to have survived the jungle humidity so well. :)

The first Tarzan book, Tarzan of the Apes, follows Tarzan into adulthood. Say twenty years. The book was published in 1912, so Daddy probably bought that knife in the early eighteen nineties.

They didn’t have stainless yet. Even in 1912 nobody had invented stainless steel.

I'm so glade to see I'm not alone in being a JW Tarzan fan, and as mentioned Maureen O'Sullivan was a fine looking woman! I'm glade we can still see these classics and thanks for the discussion on Tarzan's knife!

I think I read almost all of the Tarzan books when I was growing up.

While the earliest Tarzan movies were good films the books were much more sophisticated...so was Tarzan in the books. He spoke fluent French and English, and several other languages for example. No talk like cartoon cave man. The later, by which i meen 40's and 50's films are fun too, but they are much tamer and Tarzan isn't the educated crafty man he is in the books.

His love of and reliance on his knife is probably one of the early influences that led to me being here now...

The tarzan films also brought me here today.....when I was a boy I placed a plastic play hunting knife in my swim trunks and went to the local pool. Just read about how there is info about the tarzan movie knives in the new blade 2012 book, I have to get to the book store and read!!

In the book about Burrows and Tarzan, "Tarzan Forever" - the owner of the trained lion was really aggravated at the killing of the lion and the studio had to bay big bucks. Tarzan was one of my first heroes, read every Tarzan book the library had in the 50's..

YEP the saturday arvo movie on tv here in the 70 was usually tarz.
i'm gonna ruffle a feew loincloths here and say i preferred the movies starring Gordon Scott,Mike Henry(#1) aand Ron Ely.
these guys looked even less at home in the jungle than Weissmuller.Who did their hair out there in the bush not to mention the body waxing & shaving.?

It all came flooding back a couple of weeks ago whilst on a job at work. I had to remove a large python from a local backyard swimming pool area. The Chinese man was so astounded by me walking up to this 8ft snake and calmly picking it up he was nearly hysterical. As I walked out with it in my hands I was tempted to plunge into the pool and wrestle with it. Of course I would have needed
a larger rubber one to wrestle and cut to footage of a completely different one swimming around. Then I could have used the fire siren to emulate a call while i stood there and moved my mouth .

cheers and merry christmas
