Tarzan knife

Greystoke the legend of tarzan lord of the apes- is the definitive movie IMO.
I remember seeing it with a mate of mine in Sydney when it came out in 85.
we left the cinema walking & talking like those apes.

I remember reading the mars books by ERB while in jr high. One of my friends even went so far as to make a chess set and learn to play the martian version. Sort of in the way kids a few years ago were learning to speak Klingon.

I also thought Jane was a hottie!

In the Tarzan books (most of them, not necessarily the first), Burroughs described the knife as a large American Bowie knife. Despite this I always pictured it as a large Sheffield Bowie.

The mentions of Sean Connery in this thread have prompted me to toss out another bit of Tarzan trivia. Connery was one of the bad guys in the 1959 film, "Tarzan's Greatest Adventure," which featured Gordon Scott as Tarzan. The lead bad guy in that movie was played by Anthony Quayle.

The film proved to be both a critical and box office hit. Because of the chemistry of the cast, even though all the bad guys had been killed off, the producers wanted to bring everyone back for another Tarzan film ("Tarzan the Magnificent"). Anthony Quayle begged off because he was committed to start filming "Lawrence of Arabia." Connery, also, had to beg off because he had picked up an option to appear in a "spy movie" -- but he promised the producers that he would be in their next Tarzan film. That spy movie was, of course, "Dr. No." And the rest, as they say, is history... :D

It was a large American Bowie knife that belonged to his father, from the late 1800s.

Amazing. You’ve been a silent member for over 4 years! This is your first post? Wow!

10 year old thread.....

Older than 10 years, original post was in 2005! This threads come back multiple times. I barely remember the original movies, but I do remember Greystoke quite well, along with the books. TARZAN AND CONAN, that was what got me started really reading beyond what was required in school.

I have said it before, as long as the information is useful and adds to the conversation, and stimulates ideas and debate, then an old thread can be resurrected. Do the comments that were made so many years ago have less relevancy today just because it was long ago? I bring this point of irony up, we are encouraged to use the search function to find topics that already exist so as not to start a new thread, yet when we do, we are accused of waking the zombie thread from the grave. Would it better to start another thread…again? I for one enjoy this thread as Tarzan is one of my favorite fictional characters, so I enjoy the ideas put forth by others, adding to what has come before. Now, if only a single comment is made And, if one does not want to read a thread, one can go in and read something else. One is free to to choose what threads they want to explore.

This is one of my favorite book covers, by Neal Adams.

The first Tarzan book that Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote was "Tarzan of the Apes". As we all know, Tarzan was raised from an infant by the apes. Later on he comes across the jungle cabin where his parents lived where he found their skeletons, books, etc.

From Chapter six -

"Among other things he found a sharp hunting knife, on the keen blade of which he immediately proceeded to cut his finger. Undaunted he continued his experiments, finding that he could hack and hew splinters of wood from the table and chairs with this new toy."

So there you have it, LB. It was his Dad's knife and he not only cut himself with it, he chopped up the furniture. A true knife knut.;)
Great quote. I had all the Edgar Rice Burroughs Tarzan books as a kid (they cost around 10 cents at the annual used book sale). I think he killed a gorilla* with that knife, too (*not a close relative). ;)

JW relationship with the chimp that played Cheetah was reportedly special. The animal actor was hard to work with and tended to threaten the cast and crew. So JW punched the thing and it behaved around him from then on.
