TC Barlows...Clip point with and without pen?

I have an ebony two blade and another in the brown sawcut. The only single I have any longer is the soup, and only because I don't think Charlie brought on out in a two blade.

I don't have both, but I never wanted the double either. The single blade Charlows are such trim knives, and the blades being a very good size (not too long, not too short) I don't see the need for a pen.

I've probably carried my single blade clip Charlow more than any of my other knivess in the past month (not including my SAK). Like Christian stated in his last post above, the single blade Charlows are nice and trim with a perfectly sized blade. It sits unnoticed in my watch pocket so much so that I feel the need to periodically check and see if it's still there.
...Yup, it's still there. :D

Now, some one just has to have both? A single and a double bladed TC wouldn't need to be clip or spear, that wouldn't make a diff I don't think in thickness of the handles.

And yes, I can see that not needing a two bladed version, but as I get into carving more and more, a shorter blade makes life easier sometimes!! ;)

Now the reasons that draw me to the clip blade is it just seems more traditional, also more pointy and on these two when compared side by side, the clip blade has a wider blade, which to my way of thinking it must be a tad thinner as it gets down to the edge bevel? Than say the spear point one that is narrower, at least by photos and by eye?

Some of the barlows I see on here I've become interested in. Do you have to be lucky and just keep shopping around and looking on here also with the dealers or be quick when they are first released? It seems that you have to be quick from the get go when they are first released by GEC in order to get your hands on one.

The clip blade is wider than its spearpoint counterpart.

As to whether or not it is thinner behind the edge, I think it's mostly academic. The spear is already nice and thin; the clip won't have any significant advantage assuming it is sharpened to a pocketknife's geometry.

Nice shot Christian, old timer and young buck ;)

And Cards, ya gotta be quick for sure! You might want to post an Want to Buy thread and you may get some offers before they become sales that you might miss.

Thanks Gary. It's the spear that's the old timer though, lol...

Here's a more recent shot of it. Really starting to show its "age" now, the slight recurve is the result of a careless sharpening session. :(

Hey there John -how are things my friend?
Great shot of those beautiful knives! I too prefer the single blade.

Thanks, am doing well sir, hope you are too.

Another angle that shows the width difference a little clearer. The single blade hides in my pocket easier and one blade is enough for my needs. Was never a barlow fan before but these are most excellent.

Nice shot there, thanks, to me that pen looks like it'll be Very handy in the whittling part of the world, plus a good box opener too where you don't have to worry about controlling the tip while cutting into the cardboard and possibly harming the 'stuff' inside ;)
Thanks guys!

Gary, the Pen is a must have (to me anyways) when it comes to whittling. I also find it oh so useful for the box opening scenario you mentioned as well.

I appreciate and understand the Single blade preference for many but I always find a secondary blade is so handy on a daily basis  I just don't see much difference carry wise from single to double blade for me.

Gary, I have the single clip even though I prefer two-blade knives. There just isn't enough difference to me between a pointy clip and a pen. I waited for the sheepfoot two-blade to come out, so that I had a straight edge and a bellied edge. Now if they had done the clip with a smaller sheepfoot or coping, then I would have been all over it, but I realize that won't happen because it isn't traditional.

that could be next years trad forum knife?

Late to this thread. I was out of town at our "camp" in the U.P. MI. No internet there. The clip point is a favorite of mine.

Shown here with some vintage logging steel.

Nice setup there, do you guys/gals have one with the end of the knives showing, like laying on the spine of the handle and looking at the end of the knife to show how thick the two bladed model is from the single bladed model, I guess it can't be all that much thicker, I reckon I just like seeing more pics' :)

Not side by side, but here are a single blade spearpoint and a 2 blade clip point. I hope these photos illustrate the difference in the thickness between the single blade and 2 blade Charlows...

It doesn't look like a big difference, but in the main right front pocket of a pair of jeans, the difference is noticeable. In the watch pocket of the same pair of jeans, the difference is not as noticeable if at all.

I'll take some photos tomorrow displaying the differences in thickness/width when I have better light to work with.

Thanks!! That'll do sir looks thin enough !

sorry tried to type on my ipod touch, hate that ;)
meant to say the pen blade stock is thinner so it's not just double wide, kinda thought that'd be the case but was wondering how it would be, those shots are telling, thanks again!

The two bladed TC Clippoint arrived today, all the way from Alaska!! wow, from PA, to Alaska, back to PA, go figure ;)

Nice knife, two blade, for me at least, is the way to go, that pen blade is ground down fairly thin, had to sharpen it up a bit, the main blade is even thinner and didn't take near the time to get a razor edge on there, but now, both are keen !

Pull on both blades seem just right to my hand, very pleased with this! Thanks Charlie, good on ya! :)

This reminds me of The Princess and the Pea. Glad you like that 2-bladed one, I was worried you'd be walking lopsided with all that extra weight from the pen blade in your pocket. ;)

hehe, yep, well, it was a subtle way of getting lots of images to tied me over until I finally found one and, yep, I like it as I figured I would...

And Christian, I can EASILY see how someone could over do the sharpening on the main clip, it's already ground down so nice and thin, that you have to be spot on when putting knife to stone, otherwise it could do what happened to you, I thank you for that as I kept hearing your post in my head as I was sharpening the main blade !!! and that kept my hand steadier !!!
