So in the attempt to avoid thread jacking another thread under another manufacturer forum/area here.... I am opening this discussion here.

Tdhurl1103 saw my current collection of "Beauties " and has opted to inform me that I need a BK2.

I currently only have one Ka-Bar, which is the short black serrated tanto.

I originally bought one of these for my brother to take with him on deployment due to it's size and ability to easily rig it to a molle vest. I also bought it because it is a Ka-Bar and is made here in the U.S. It is a fighting man's knife and seemed an appropriate addition for his loadout. I wanted him to have a reliable blade that he could carry with him just in case.

After buying one for him, I decided that if it was good enough for him, then it was more than good enough for me. So now I have one. The only problem is that I never use it.

Now before I say this, please understand, I am in no way trying to start a battle here.

I never use this knife because I have an original Cold Steel Recon Tanto fixed blade. I use that knife for just about all of my outdoor cutting task, whatever they may be. It's in my bug out bag, my range bag, and any other place I can put it if I am going outdoors.

Now it does not take much to convince me to buy something sharp... as long as it is of quality. So without further a due, sell me on the BK2 and why it should replace my Recon Tanto.

I would never try to convince you to "replace" one knife with another. I would instead attempt to show you why you need another sharp, pointy object, in this case specifically the BK2.

The 2 is a beast of a knife. It's the Timex of knives. Relatively inexpensive, legal for EDC carry in Texas (single edged and less than 5.5") and just like a Timex, "it will take a licking and keep on ticking".:D Do a search in the Becker forum with the key words "lawn mower" for a solid example.

Detractors will say

"It's too heavy.", to which I say "Maybe." What do you want to be able to do with a knife. A Chevy Suburban is a heavy vehicle compared to a VW Bug. Which one will be capable of doing more work? The weight differential between a BK2 and any other 5" bladed knife is only 3 to 4 ounces, less than the weight of a fully loaded Mickey D's quarter pounder with cheese.

"The blade is too thick." At .25", yes the blade is thicker than most. Just means it won't bend as easily and has lots of meat on the blade to last until doomsday. A BK2 can be used to do any thing a smaller/thinner/scrawnier knife can do. Will it do it as well? Depends on the task. The BK2 will not do every thing well. Trust me, I'd much rather try digging a splinter out with a Buck 484 or even a 110 than a BK2. Could you make it work? Yeah. If I really HAD to. :D

Now, me? "Do you use one on a daily basis?" Honesty compels me to answer "No." I have a bunch of knives that I use more often and more frequently.

But ...... I carry a BK2 and a BK3 in every car, truck and tractor (plus other tools) on the place. Why? Because then the fecal matter hits the rotary air mover, I want blades I can count on not to fail under really heavy/hard use. And I'm not talking Zombie Apocalypses here. I talking about cutting or wedging whatever I need to cut or wedge.

If you get one and don't like it, put it on the exchange and it won't last long.

To think of carrying a quarter pounder with cheese around in my pocket makes me giggle a little.

I get where you are going with this though.

Maybe my best course of action would be to sell the short black tanto and use the proceeds to fund a BK2. Seems to be the best thing to do because I don't use it.

I also am fortunate enough to have a brick and mortar knife store not to terribly far away from where I live ( about an hour ). All I need is an excuse to make the trip and it seems I have just found one lol.

Thanks for your input zzyzzogeton.

You don't need one....

You need to hold one....

Just once.

Then you will need one.

Haha, thanks for calling me out there. I really like your collection, its impressive. I love that other brand...a lot. I even like the CS Recon Tanto, and think it is a very nice knife to add to or augment any collection. That being said, I wouldn't try to suggest you replace any knife in that awesome group with any other knife. But I couldn't, not mention I thought you might be lacking just a bit here in the fixed blade niche, the tank of a knife, the BK2. Actually, I said the BK2 because it is comparable, however so, with the CS RT. The BK2 is a knife that most everyone loves, regardless if it gets used a lot or at all. It's just a beast and can take and produce such a beating. The BK2 was my first "real" knife so I'm a bit biased here.

I have a BK9 which is phenomenal, I didn't suggest it to you because its a big knife and I wasn't sure if you wanted, needed or even liked a "big" knife. I also didn't mention the BK7 which is just so cool, and a great addition to my collection, but it suffers from middle child syndrome being in between the 9 and 2. My BK2 is the one on my belt when I go out to the woods. And with all the BKs in production the 2 is the one on my belt at every Beckerhead gathering I have attended.

Moose is correct. You won't really need it until you hold it.

Oh, one thing though. I recommend the BK22. Its still the BK2, however it comes with the nylon sheath and not the plastic one with the flimsy belt loop.

After reading your reply... I think I may be more in line with the BK7. I am a middle child so I have a soft spot for that remark ;)

I am afraid of holding anything of quality because I will inevitably find a reason to justify buying regardless of the fact that I most likely don't need said item or have any use for it lol.

I will be making a trip to GP Knives here in a few weeks and will check them out. I will probably indeed end up with something if the quality is as good as stated. I have looked online but it isn't the same. I hope they are as durable as stated because I would love to have a fixed blade I can't all but abuse and not have to worry about.

My CS RT is the biggest knife I have. I generally am not a big knife person. I do feel the need however to have a big a$$ fixed blade just in case though. A Becker may possibly fit the bill here.

I got 3 of em. All I have to say about the BK2 is

I think the 7 gets overshadowed by the 12; but that could be because I prefer the drop point to the 7's clip. It isn't available right now (it's a KnifeWorks exclusive, formally known as the Doug Ritter RSK Mk2 Perseverance...but we refer to it as the BK12); though, if you aren't in a rush, it's worth the wait)

I have toyed with the idea of buying the Becker BK3 Tac Tool. The design intrigues me and it kind of has..... for lack of a better term..... a retarded tanto look to it. It looks like a tanto with down syndrome mated with a clip point during a metallurgical orgy of sorts.

I am usually not a fan of the clip point style because I feel like it would be more likely to break than a drop point or tanto, but then I guess that really does not matter due to the fact that if I have to worry about that... I am probably abusing the knife anyway.

I see your in Missouri and it's supposed to be a hot summer. Take your new BK2 out to your car and cut the hole out for that sunroof you always wanted.:D

That is what I bought the Cold Steel Recon Tanto for lol. They were cutting though car hoods and doors so I figured what better tool for autobody modification?

In all seriousness... a question for you Becker people.

Is there any particular knife I should avoid? Just curious. I know blade shape all comes down to personal preference, and I am digging the Tac Tool. The BK2 also looks appealing to me. Just curios if there were any specifically to avoid for any reason. With some brands certain products are good while others are not. With some everything is good and with some everything is bad.

They are all great knives but you need to figure out which one(s) are right for you. I see you are heading to GP...they usually have all of them in stock. You need to look at them in person.

It sounds like you don't want to go out and buy something just because it looks cool which in the long run is a bad idea. Look at the knives closely for the size, style of sheath, length, weight and blade shape.

Have you been to Grand Prairie? I'll warn ya ahead of time...know your spending limit. If your married, leave the other half at home and burn the credit card receipt.

I have the 2,9,11 and 16 all for different reasons.

I have been to GP quite a few times and have spent my fair share of paying for their utility bills and storefront lol. I completely understand what you are getting at. I go there because it is the only real knife store that I know about within an hour to my location. Can I get my knives cheaper? Certainly! However, I feel it is worth the extra time and money because of the fact I can drive there and see a lot of different knives in one place. From Becker's to Spyderco's, from high end to low end knives. They are also more than willing to let you fondle them and compare. You can't do this online. I have bought knives I wouldn't have bought online and not bought knives I would have bought online.

Didn't mean to turn this into a commercial for them :D

I look forward to heading out there when I get some time and cash to go and check out these Becker's. Still thinking the Tac Tool and BK2 will somehow make their way into my collection. Possibly even a couple of others too.

I have the BK3 and it rides in my truck. I never leave home without it. I have used it as a prybar, a dirt digger and a small limb chopper. Its a tough sucker. I have it in my truck for the time I might need it to "save the day" or "save my own hide." It can do it. If you haven't seen the You Tube video below, I suggest you check it out.

Also, being a middle child myself, I do really like my BK7. I might not use it much, but I'll never get rid of it.
