Howdy folks-

I had a couple of items sitting around and decided to make up a more streamlined, compact fire kit for pouches and hiding in packs n' such. I usually keep the same ingredients scattered in different ways, but I like this kit much more. It's probably a little under 2" in length, with a firesteel, fatwood, hacksaw piece, and jute.

I have been coupling it with a small LED and a whistle into most of my blade pouches when I go out, so that I've got a comfortable little 'uh-oh' kit.

Thanks for looking!

Sweet man! I am a fan of jute for tinder. Paired up with the fatwood, it makes a foolproof firekit.

Cool setup there, it is really compact, but still enough to get the fire started.

I've seen a few people talk about jute, but I've yet to see anyone use it to start a fire. Do you just take a section and fluff it up? Does it burn when wet?

Jute is the bomb. I use it more than paracord. The jute is my preferred tinder actually, and takes a spark great from a firesteel. You just take the end of the twine, unravel it, and scrape it with something rough or sharp. This loosens all the fibers and gives it some fluff and airiness. After that, it takes a spark very, very easily.

I would not call it waterproof, but I've tried it when wet and it worked, just didn't burn as long. If it gets wet before getting unraveled and not after, it works not much differently than when dry! (The inner fibers stay fairly dry, and can be exposed at the last minute.)

Cool. I might have to try this as well. I might put some ranger bands around it for fun.

If you look close you can see the jute stickin out. I unraveled it and fluffed up a length of it.

spooky, looks like a nice little kit that is easy to transfer from one pouch to another.

what is that white tapey stuff on the knife handle?

It's just some medical adhesive tape, the latex kind. I wanted to fatten up the front end of my M2K a bit and still allow it to fit in its sheath. Worked out pretty well actually, and it's hard to ugly up something when it already looks like a ninja turtle.

As much as I love 550-cord, I prefer to use jute when doing any construction...it handles easily, holds knots securely and is biodegradable. If I'm using several smaller sections for constructing a shelter, I like to use jute...when I depart, I just cut it up and let it fall...if it's 550-cord, it's just good wilderness stewardship to police it up along with the fact that it's reusable. I like both jute and 550-cord and you'll find both in my pack.

That is a little knife Siguy made for a passaround. Im assuming its still floating around, although I havent seen much of it lately. It is a sweet little blade with a killer edge on it.
Get ahold of Siguy and maybe he can get you in on the passaround if its still goin. You really need to check it out!
