barberfobic, the blade is still floating around, i forget exactly who has it right now, i am away from my list...if you are interested pm or email me and i can toss you in on the end.
Same here. I feel dependent upon them so I make sure I have ample supplies of both on-hand. I have a couple similar kits, one in a small case Kevin Estella gave me about the size of a Tic-Tac container and the other, well, that one was extremely expensive - like what four or five K&M Match Safes would have cost me - a prescription pill vial. Both have the exact same components and the pill vial seems to be pretty waterproof.
Another argument for a short section of hacksaw blade. It works great for teasing out a fluff of jute and is very efficient at harvesting dry inner bark fibers and "dander," both of which work well as tinder also. I have not tried throwing a spark off a hacksaw blade but it may even work for that. I take a length of jute about a foot long and tie a knot every inch and a half or so and cut my tinder piece off just behind the knot and tease it out. The knot keeps the fibers from blowing around and, if I accidentally brush it with my sleeve or something stupid, I don't scatter my tinder.
Same here. I've never used jute for tinder, but after (almost) losing my fire kit on my last overnight, I'm adding kits to all my sheaths.
How fast does jute burn? I'm wondering if impregnating it with Johnson's paste wax would give a longer burn time, a la PJCBs (but less messy) and Coghlan's fire starter sticks.
The little balls of fluff that I make only last about five seconds or so but it's plenty to get a piece of fatwood going if you "fuzz" a little bit of the fatwood.
The main thing about jute is how well it will catch a spark and turn it into flame. I have tried teasing the end to catch the spark and flame off, ostensibly leaving a glowing ember on the unteased cordage but it hasn't worked that well at maintaining an ember.
