Teflon vs. Phosphor Bronze washers

Sorry to be another guy raising this old thread but it's a good one. I was thinking about this a few days ago giving my SOG Toothlock a light cleaning which uses Teflon washers.I had an old CRKT Prowler for many years that used Teflon washers as well so no complaints on the smoothness.

Bronze washers do raise an important factor in their use...tarnish and corrosion.Bronze is not exempt from requiring oil to protect them from tarnish formation or chemical and element corrosion.

Also as a knife collector I've seen variable results of first impressions from bronze washers on knives straight out of the box needing a hit of oil.Teflon though has given a very good first impression.

Not to branch out this thread into something else but as old as this thread the notion of 'outdated' or 'lower quality' is a bit of a loose term even after all these years.Comparing bronze to Teflon is like comparing Zytel to G-10...more expensive doesn't always imply better considering the mix of traits they possess.

Teflon can and will compress and eventually result in some side to side play. PB has to be adjusted as it wears or tweaked/tuned for a perfect fit and isn’t as slick as Teflon but it will hold up better to lateral stress and won’t be nowhere near as susceptible to the deformation of the softer Teflon material.

It’s all dependent on application and what serves my end use better.

Why is it good to drag this old thread back up again?
