Tell me about Sodbusters

Still wondering about the Boker Gauchos? Also I see where there are a couple made by Kissing Crane with Solingen high carbon steel for around $10. That would seem a heck of a deal.

I got one of the Kissing Crane Coal Miners a while back for around $7. I think I added it to an Ebay order since it shipped free with another purchase. I like the blade shape- more of a clip point than most sodbusters. It has cheap ABS-type molded handles, but for the price, I love it.

I've always wondered why all sodbusters have the huge brass pivot pins? Is there a function, or is it just tradition?

I'm also looking for a Queen sodbuster but it seems I can't find any in Europe?
Ordering from the States cost more in shipping and import taxes than the knife itself.
Are the cases, german eyes and kissing cranes from carbon steel or stainless?
If they are stainless it isn't more special for me than a sak

I really do like the Queen country cousin with black delrin and D2 blade :(

Does anyone still make them with a liner lock and a carbon blade?

I haven't seen any CURRENT production sod busters with a liner lock. However, Eye Brand makes a lockback version of their large sod buster w/carbon blade (Solingen steel). It's kind of pricey at about $55 (street price) or higher, depending on where you buy it. I've seen one or two of those listed on eBay recently.

I've also seen older Case liner lock sod busters with a stainless blade ('70s vintage), but I'm pretty sure they're not producing that one anymore.

Got the yellow delrin Queen Country Cousin for my wife and she -and I- love it. The handles just look great. TUFFFF to open & close. How DO you tweak that pivot anyway?

the sodbuster i have is a "custom" made by k.r. johnson. d2 blade, stag scales.

so it certainly wasn't cheap. the blade is shaped like the case model, lots of belly.

i can tell you what i like about mine, but don't find it necessarily better than another knife or blade shape.

-the blade is thin and takes and holds a great edge. great for opening mail or packages.
-the handle is thick for a knife this small, but makes for a nice full grip. i don't worry about my hand slipping.
-small enough to carry as a second knife, and very non-threatening.
-it sure is pretty!

SMKW has several Kissing Krane, CAse and others. I ordered the new lockback Bear, but it is on back order so it has not arrived yet:

And look at the middle of this page at the 9.99 area and there are many liner locks that are sod busters. These are China made but have good blades for the price. I don't like the brass liner locks for strenght but they are very stiff and almost don't need a liner lock at all.

Ran across a used Kissing Crane the other day at the swap meet. It was a large size with brown wood scales and the only marking was the two little cranes on the base of the blade. The guy wanted $45 so I quickly handed it back and walked on. since then I've looked around a bit and haven't seen anything like it with those markings? What exactly was it as far as steel and age?

I've got the Case yellow carbon, the Bulldog red carbon, and 2 Queens in D2. The simplicity of the sodbuster style if very attractive and utilitarian. It's all that you need and nothing that you don't want. The shape is ideal (Queens are slightly pointier) and the handles on these are again very suitable to use. They're users...period. I love mine.

+1, Great definition.

Badhammer older or the etch was wiped off. Even older does not increase it anywhere near that price...
