Tell me about Sodbusters

to whoever was asking about how the boker gauchos compare: THEY DON'T. i just got a large boker gaucho "tree brand" sodbuster and it's horrible. no symmetry to the grind, looks like it was ground by a very drunk gaucho. one side of the blade is ground 3/4 of the thickness of the blade and the other side barely at all. (instead of a nice, even "V" shape.) in addition, the grind is quite wavy and uneven. i spent an hour with diamond and ceramic stones trying to get a nice edge on it and it's still choppy and uneven. VERY disappointing. i'll probably take it to the grinding belt and reprofile the edge entirely, although i suspect i'll lose half the steel in the process given how horribly uneven it is now...

maybe i just got a bad one, but i'll never buy another boker sight unseen (ie. through the mail.) much happier with my case sodbusters.

i got the boker because i wanted a large sodbuster with a carbon steel blade (boker calls it "high carbon" which i assume is NOT stainless?"). my case jr. CV will take an absolutely wicked edge, much sharper than the stainless version. but the case large sodbuster in stainless takes a MUCH better edge than the boker's high carbon. all in all i gotta' say the boker is a big pile of steamy poo, the absolute worst folder i own. and i own a whole lot of 'em...

The fit and finish is not good on the Bear sodbuster lockback. I'll stick with the nonlocking Case cv sodbuster jr.

I just bought a Large Gaucho yesterday. Hopefully when it arrives I will have a better experience to relate than your own. Also looking at a Case Sodbuster Jr in CS which I'll probably get as well.

It says that Boker has a "lifetime warranty", did you try contacting them about the issues?

I have a small Böker Sod and it's been a very good knife.Cheap to buy and the finish is more rustic than CASE but it's not a poor knife at all, good snap/spring and the carbon sharpens up very well.It is what it is-a worker:thumbup:

i actually did, this morning and just heard back. they said to send it in and they'll take care of it...we'll see how it goes.

After reading the original post i went and bought a case jr. Freaking love it. Its always been a design i liked but without the lock have been apprehensive to buy. Glad i did got it this weekend and play with it constantly now. Its a great sheeple knife especially for a teacher. My zero tolerance 301 scares a few people and my sak is my food knife. My father in law has carried a minibuck for sometime now so i ordered a case jr for him today as a xmas gift. Im sure he will love it. Plus it holds a wicked edge with the sharpmaker. I hate typing on my ipod touch!!!!!!!!

mollyhatchet, I just got my Bear sodbuster lockback yesterday from SMKW and it sucks! Loose blade, bad fit and finish! This is what the USA is making in AL now! I feel bad to say China has better ones at 1/3 the price.....

OK, my Large Gaucho arrived and I'm pretty pleased. It has an even grind on the edge and is smooth in operation and only the slightest lateral play when opened. Pretty sharp out of the box though a little time on my Sharpmaker has made it a little better.

The only real negative I have at the moment, and a small one at that is a small nick on the top of the liners on the inside of the handle. If you run your finger along the liner you can feel a rough spot. A few swipes with some emery cloth will slick it right up.

Overall it's a nice looking knife and actually pretty darn big. I'm looking to get a Case Sodbuster Jr. and suspect that it might be just about perfect in the size department. All in all for a $20 ebay purchase, (shipping included) I'm well pleased.

I ordered a black handled Queen Sodbuster from the knifecenter on 07/14/09.
They must have gotten them in stock today, because shipping notice just came in.
I will eagerly be awaiting the brown truck on monday.

My buddy gave me a black Case Jr. in SS

It gets as sharp is I need and I want more Soddies!

I have the d2 yellow handled version and every time i close it the blade hits on something inside the handle about an inch from the tip of the blade and it immediately rolls the edge. also the d2 is ridiculously hard to sharpen. i definitely do not recommend D2 in this knife.

What holds an edge longer, the German carbon steel sodbuster or the CV steel sodbuster?

I like playing "dress up" with the Soddys. Here one I did in Bocote.

Rayban: love it! how do you remove the original scales? are they epoxied on or just pinned? i've been wanting to do this but was hoping to get some guidance before destroying a perfectly good soddie.

They have great blade grinds with nice slim blades that cut like a knife should. With a nice comfortable handle to boot! I suggest the case sodbuster jr. in CV.

Still my favorite after 35 years. Hard to beat a comfortable worker at a very reasonable price that still works after that much time.

tom19176, I'm sorry that your Bear sodbuster, like mine has no quality. I will not be buying anymore Bear junk. I should have listened, had not heard much good about Bear on this forum.

Some of those are VERY nice. Only problem I could see in a SB with fancy scales is that then I could not put ANYTHING in the pocket with it.

Gotta have somewhere for my change and chapstick.

Nice knives dudes!
