Ten reasons why the Sebenza is the Rolex of knives

My favorite Rolex keeps time to within a couple of seconds a month. Granted, that's not as good as the radio-controlled watch I set it from every couple of months, but I get a lot more satisfaction from the Rolex. I think the analogy to a Sebenza is pretty close. I could do just fine with a $20 Chinese slippie, but I choose and am able not to.

I guess you could put one in a sock and pummel someone with it.

Paying a few hundred dollars for a well made pocket knife is not the same as paying thousands for a piece of jewelry that occasionally keeps time.

Some people are into CRK as jewelry or some kind of status symbol I am sure, but at least there is utility there. People can check the time on a watch that will keep better time for a fraction of the price.

Bottom line is, some people are keen to draw parallels between disparate objects of their affection. Maybe to justify their expendatures, maybe in an attempt to lay praise upon one or the other, but completely pointless. Just like the standard knife/car analogies that fly around the forums.

Tags,

I applaud you for your thoughtful initial post. I agree on many points. I own 3 sebenzas, all of which are rare or unique. I do not own any wristwatches, my cellphone keeps accurate time. I suppose I am more utilitarian in mindset or I would own a Rolex too. The most relevant point in your list for me is the fact that, like Rolex watches, Sebenzas hold thier value.

I disagree...the only similarity is that they are both timeless. Rolex's cost a fortune to get tuned up, Sebenza's get tuned up for free =)

Also, while a Sebenza is terribly expensive for a knife, there are other knives (like strider, WH) that are even more terribly expensive. I think CRK is more like Omega. Awesome lineage, timeless, but not ludicrously priced, just very very expensive. =)

Sebenza, the Porsche 911 of knives.

Few year back, I get my Rolex for tuned up, Cost me $450.00, The reason is QC of the watch, lots of knife cost more than Sebenza, But quality not as good, I have few benchmade, they are good knife, But Sebenza is different any which way.

I could see the argument, but I think Benchmade is more the Omega of knives. Less expensive but still pricey, "sportier" and more innovative, and with a much bigger product line. Specs match up on paper and in some ways it's functionally superior, but there's a certain something missing in the intangibles dept, and of course in reputation.

Excepting the blingified models, Rolexes are not "ludicrously" priced compared to the true "haut de gamme" watch houses. The difference between a $200 Benchmade and a $380 Seb seems about the same (relatively speaking) as a $2500 Seamaster and a $5000 Submariner.

For the record, I have owned two Omegas and two Rolexes (though I don't own either at the moment), so I'm not partial.

A watch like a Rolex Sub is a tool, not a piece of jewelry. Why I like them, I prefer lesser known watches that the average person may not realize are expensive. Brands like Omega, Sinn, Fortis, Marathon, etc. Breitling used to be a serious tool watch for aviators, but has become a mall watch in many regards. A few of their
models display this lineage, but most are huge, gaudy, jewelry.

The Seb is a classic, and I think the anology to a high end, well finished tool watch is correct.

What? That doesn't make any sense at all. See the response to your post below to understand why...

And, people can cut things with a knife that will cut better than a Sebenza, for a fraction of the price.

A Sebenza is a high end production knife, a rolex is an expensive piece of jewelry. While I would own the former, the latter is useless.

Useless? Expensive jewelry is useless? Tell that to a good woman and see how far you get.

You want utility? OK, look to your own watch (if you indeed wear a watch). If Rolex did not exist you would not have the following inventions:

first wristwatch, in 1905;
first waterproof watch, in 1926;
first self-winding watch, in 1931;
first calendar wristwatch with the date on the dial, in 1945.

And if you travel through a dodgy country you'll be glad you packed a Rolex. If you need quick cash, it's about the only watch you can get a decent amount for. See how far you get with a Timex, Omega or Breitling. Think of a Rolex as a survival paracord bracelet. Now there's utility.

Now there's utility.
As far as I'm concerned, my watch displays the correct time. That's all the utility I need. I don't see how someone can come on a hobby forum (knife forum no less) and proclaim that another hobby/interest/collection is useless when in fact, knives fall into the same exact category! A knife cuts things. A watch tells time. There are expensive knives. There are expensive watches. Why is that hard to understand? No one needs a Sebenza because like another poster said, there are a lot cheaper knives that will cut better than a Sebenza, just like there are many atomic watches that are cheaper than a Rolex but will keep time better than a Rolex. If Rat Finkenstein wants to say that a Rolex is an expensive piece of useless jewelery then I suggest he promptly send me his Sebenza/s because he clearly has no need for it/them.

Great thread. I like how it brings out the fans as well as the non-fans of the forums.

I am a fan of both.

Hear hear :thumbup:
I've owned a Sebenza, Strider, Hinderer, Al Mar, Kershaw, Rolex, Citizen and too many other knife and watch brands to mention.
Each to their own. C'est la vie :)

I could come up with more than 10 reasons why I think CRK is the rolex of knives....I never owned or probably will own a rolex, but since it kinda is a generic term for an item being of the highest quality....We will go with that...lol.

I'd have to agree with all of that except 1. and 5.
1. I haven't met him so I wouldn't know!
5. ESEE will give you a brand new knife free of charge if you melt it with a torch. And you don't even have to be the original owner...I don't think you can get much better than that.

I lived near Chris Reeve and Trevor Burger (before C.R. left for USA). Both very nice chaps. Could spend hrs chatting. They're passionate. But who isn't when they're selling you their craft?
Ernest Emerson looks like a passionate friendly guy as well.

I never met him in person either, but have spoken to him on the phone several times. Great Guy !!!

If there is an issue with the knife, it will be fixed by crk, melting a knife with a torch is not an issue, its idiotic.....but I know what your saying. I dont abuse my crk, I dont pry with them, use them as screwdrivers, do stupid tortue tests with them, etc. If there is an issue with the knife, I have no doubt they will fix it.

I prefer my TAGs and still waiting on my small Sebenza. I may get a Large if I like the Small. I don't see a Rolex in my future.
