tenacious or cyclone

I got a almost new mini cyclone on the boards here for $20. It's a sweet little knife, great steel, flat ground leaf shaped blade. I like it a lot. Not worried about the AO. I have a chive from 2000 with probably over 5000 openings on it and it has never failed and all i've ever done in terms of maintenance it shoot it up with some brake cleaner and blast it out with compressed air and reapply a little oil to pivot. Showed the chive once to a friend of my dad's who has mangled hands from working in machine shops, he liked the idea of AO since his 65 year old fingers aint what they used to be. Simplicity is in the hand of the holder.

I am not super familiar with the Sandvik steel used in the Cyclone, but I believe it's roughly comparable to the Cr13 in terms of hardness.

As far as the AO feature, we can safely say it is an issue, there have been failures. But the knife still opens manually, and locks correctly even with a malfunctioning AO.

The Tenacious is one of the best values at around $35 "street price". It is a slick opener with great ergos and F&F.

So really it comes down to what YOU like. Do you prefer thumbhole to thumbstud? It's hard to describe the "FEEL" of a knife, so you really have to experience it yourself.

Either knife will do the job you want, and are decent knives for the money.

I dislike AO knives in general. My vote goes with the Tenacious on this one. Comparing what I've seen from a quick search, you can get the Tenacious shipped under $38.

Condition 1, since you were clearly dissatisfied with that particular model (understandably if you had repeated failures), did you consider having it replaced with a different model?
Yes I did.

In my letter to them on the last 2 occasions I requested a non AO model since I have lost confidence is this one. Request denied. Knife repaired once and replaced once.

For your unfortunate luck, PM me a addy, and I'll send you a knife of your choice Condition 1 (manual of course).

I have both. The Tenacious is a great EDC knife, the G10 handle is very good for the price. The Cyclone is a little thinner for the pocket , I love the blade shape., The adonized Al handle also great, not even slippery. (But in cold environment wear gloves for metal handles.)

Get them both, and you'll be happy.

Man I need to start complaining about my Kershaws ;)
No kidding. :D I'd say one would be hard pressed to find another example of that level of support in a general forum on teh interwebs.

Hey, Thomas! My Cyclones (which are mechanically fine, BTW) came to me too sharp. Can you send me a different knife? :p :D

As far as the "AOs break all the time" rhetoric, I have heard of the torsion bars breaking on occasion, but I must have a couple dozen AOs, and I've never broken one. I guess I just must live right. :D

A little something for you two.

I will be one of those people who suggest something that you are not thinking about buying.

But I think it is worth mentioning since it appears you are going after a budget knife.

The Buck advantage pro. S30V steel G10 and made in the USA for about $45. I think it might be the new king of the budget knives with the materials used and made here in the US.

Not much to not like plus it has a nice thin grind which makes for one heck of a slicer.

Edit: Forgot to mention it has a flipper and a low ride pocket clip for left or right tip up carry. I'm really surprised these aren't talked about more.

Thomas,
I’ll definitely take you up on your offer.
I have no way to contact you.
I have no PM and you have no email listed.
However, I have an email listed.
If you want to email me or I can email you at Kershaw.

Keep in mind, it’s not the AO, it’s the Cyclone.
I have Blurs, Shallots and Blackout’s with few problems.
In fact never with the Shallot.
It’s the AO Cyclone.
Last time I sent in a Cyclone I asked for a Lahar.
If you think that’s fair? Contact me I’ll gladly send you my address.

Thanks
C1
