I found a source for Texaco type A quenching oil!!!! The only problem is that I can only buy it by the drum. Would anyone be interested in some of this if I buy a drum? I would sell it for actual cost of the oil about plus whatever it takes to package and ship it.

Ed, Are you still interested in half a barrel?

Da qo tah', Did you order the Chevron stuff?

Rick

I would be interested, though I know shipping should be worked out beforehand (for those of us a ways away). Best shipping method I can find is the one & two gallon plastic gas containers at Walmart. They are about $2.00 and $4.00, respectively. I hear that 5 gallon can break with UPS. I have had 5 gallon sealed pails of resin sent by UPS and once in a while the bust one (what a mess) The filled one gallon would be about 7-8 lbs and the 2 would be 14-16 lbs. The containers are pretty stout , though the safest way may be to put the filled container in a box with a shell of packing. Taping a containter shut with duct tape may work, though. Whatever, I would be willing to pay you for the oil, the container, the shipping and your time.

Let us know what you decide

Bob

Hi Bob, You and one other person have shown some interest. The other person had a good idea. He asked if we could get a bulk discount by buying 2 or 3 drums. I'm not sure what I would do with that much oil, I'd need a lot more takers. I'm checking it out and I will let you know what I find out. As it stands right now, 1 drum works out to be about 6.75 a gallon. I'll see if I can work them down.

I talked to the dealer today and found out a couple of things.

First, since Texaco was bought out by Chevron, certain parts of the Texaco line was sold off to Shell oil. The Quenching oil formula was one of the items sold to Shell. So this oil is manufactured by Shell to the spec's of Texaco Type A. Hope I'm making sense.

Second, the price for a drum of this oil was originally quoted at 366.85 per drum. I was corrected today, it is 266.85 per drum. That is only 4.86 per gallon! They are sending me the specs of this oil on Thursday so that I can compare to the specs that I have for the Texaco type A. I'll keep everyone posted. Keep your fingers crossed.

I am also interested. Have heard about this quenchant but could never find any. Let me know when, where and all that.:)

Hello Rick: Congradulations!! I will take any and all you have left. Plan on selling at the school after we have it up and running. It is great to hear it is available. You were very luck to find a dealer who was enthusiastic enough to track it down.

Thank you all for your interest. I will be getting some spec's on it tomorrow. Everyone please cross your fingers that this is it! I can't believe the journey/adventure that this has been.

Special thanks to Ed for giving me his friends name and number in the first thread about this oil(by the way The area code has changed, just more to the adventure when you get the recorded "sorry, the number that you have dialed cannot be reached at this time...") I finally got ahold of him, what a nice guy. If it wasn't for him getting some fairly recently, I might not have had the idea to double check my local sources. It sounds like it will be pretty easy to get if it is the right stuff. Pretty cheap too.

Stay tuned and keep 'em crossed.

Rick

HOLY CRAP!!!! I can't believe how much I have been chasing my tail on this. I found out a few things.

1. The distributor that told me that he could get the Type A quoted me on a Shell equivilent. The "equivilent" is NOT an exact duplicate. I got some specs on it today, and it's close but not exact.
2. I called a Texaco/Chevron Global sales rep. in Kentucky, and he assured me that the Texaco Type A is still being produced and I should be able to get it through yet another distributor in Salt Lake City.
3. I found out that if you want the real stuff, you will have to pay for it.... It's $440.00 per barrel! This stuff must be part gold! That's $8.00 per gallon!
4. There is 6 barrels of the actual Texaco Quenchtex A sitting in a distribution plant in California waiting for us to order it.

I need to know for sure who want's it, and how much you want at the $8.00 per gallon price plus shipping and containers. If you can drive to my house (Lehi, Utah) to pick it up it would just be $8.00 per gallon.

The bad news is, I don't have a whole lot of money laying around after Christmas so I might need everyone to prepay before I can order it.

Let me know. It's the real deal, not an "equivilent"!

Rick

I almost forgot... I will have to pay sales tax on this stuff. The price just went up to a 8.53 per gallon. Sorry for all of the confusion.

Rick - I'll prepay on 4-6 gallons. Let me know if & when It happens & I'll send the $$.

Bob

i'd love some, just depends on how much shipping 4 gallons of the stuff to Virginia costs...

anyone have any idea? (postal code: 24060)

Hi SkaerE,

I don't know what the actual weight would be. I'm guessing at 8 lb's per gallon plus 3 lbs for the pail and a box puts it at 35 lbs. UPS will ship a 35 lb. package from me to your zip for $27.74. But again, I'm just guessing the weights.

Rick

If anyone else want's to check out the cost of shipping my zip code is 84043.

wow, that about doubles the price. damn, why cant someone in Virginia order a barrel of the stuff ;)

For anyone who wants to, here's the contact info of the Global sales rep at Chevron Texaco that helped me out. I'm sure that there is a distributor out there on the east coast area somewhere, and he should be able to set you in the right direction. Just email him and I'll be you will only have to make one more phone call after he responds.

Hey Rick, did you ever get any Type A, and if so are you still selling any? If so I'd be interested in some.

Thanks, Will

Hello Will, I am in the process of verifying that the texaco type A that is being produced today is in fact the same formula that Ed uses (bought his 20 years ago). Everything was looking good until I got two different data sheets from two different Texaco reps. One data sheet said "quench speed 20 seconds" and the other (older revision) said "GM quench speed 28 seconds". I am told that we are after the 28 second version. I have a hunch that since the quench speed was worded differently on the two data sheets, that the method of testing had changed somwhere between the two versions that were given to me. I called the Texaco engineers to find out if my hunch is correct. so far I found out that "GM" stands for.. you guessed it, General Motors. I am waiting for a reply on my theory. The guy who would know has been out of town. I promise that I won't give up! I wouldn't be a knife maker if I did;) When I get verification that this is the correct oil, I will post my findings on this thread and send everyone an email that said that they were interested. I hope to have more accurate pricing also. Earlier in the thread the price has changed a couple of times. Well, here we go again, I got the local rep to give it to me at $6.50 a gallon. We were at $8.00 a gallon last post. That price difference should help us out as far a shipping costs and buckets to ship in. Stay tuned and feel free to email me anytime if anyone is interested.

Rick

Thanks Rick, had some Chevron on order with Uncle Al, but havnt' heard from him for a while, don't know if I'll ever get it.

The local Texico bulk plant doesnt' even have the listing for it anymore. I'm starting to climb the walls, have pused what I'm useing now about as far as I can, want to see what if any improvements a slower quench will make. I have though of investing in a half gallon of minneral oil as I beleive Ed Caffry use vet grade mineral oil on 52100.

I tried to E-mail you but your profile won't allow it, so I had to dreg this post up.

I apreiate all your efforts, and if shipping isn't too much I'll probly get five gallons or so.

Thanks,

Will

I'm still using "Goddard's Goop" for my high carbons. I love the results I get but, like most of us, would like to try something different also. I can't find the type A anywhere so Rick, I appreciate all the leg work your doing. Thanks again.
