Thank USPS

Registered Mail gets a signature from every person who handles it from the accepting clerk at the lobby window to the recipient when it's delivered. Absolutely the surest way to track who had it last.

Thanks for the clarification Esav...

On the advice front I suspect that sending something tracked and insured still is'nt a guarantee for successful delivery .... but I am keeping my fingers crossed that a parcel heading out to me might still turn up.... it was sent international post and given a tracking number .... but still appears to have gone "missing" allowing for the time expired.

Here in Italy shipping something insured with the national post service is like claiming "hey there's something precious inside here, steal it !"

Also their insurance is a scam and you'll never get money back, unless an invoice was included at shipping time but only companies can do that.

Shipping with an express courier is 3 times more expensive so when shipping knives with the national post service we prefer to ship without insurance and declaring a content of low interest like household appliances :D

....My guess is the usual postman was not on duty that day because he is great and goes out of his way to get me my packages. They have had many problems with his temp replacement in the past so I hope it was not him.

Actually, the one time I had a problem (the same problem I referred to above) it was when my regular carrier was on vacation and a temp was filling in. Once I finally called up to ask, my regular carrier gave me a call and we talked for a while. Actually, he gave me at least three calls offering advice and thoughts on how I might find the thing. My problem was only worth around $12, but I was still really impressed with how much effort USPS put into tracking the package down. The carrier even when to another local house with the same last name as mine to check. I didn't get it back, but I was impressed. As someone else said, approach the people involved with calm and respect, and be persistent, and there is a good chance of something working out.

Bummer to hear. I would be so ticked at the guy who shipped with no insurance. I have not had any go missing, but I try to over insure, signature required and tracking.
I just had a new led tv, and playstation three, games etc delivered (fed ex). Each one of them ended up on my front porch. Two without so much as a knock or ring. All tree while we were home. I caught the lady when she literally ditched the tv. I asked, hey don't I need to sign or something? Kind of pissed. She responded "oddly enough......no" as she sped away.

Good luck. I would be crying. For sure, will make me more viligant.

Very sorry to hear about your knives missing. Hopefully everything will work out in your favor and will get straightened out quickly.

I always ship USPS Priority mail and insure the knives for their real value and use their Boxes.

I wrap them up very well and pack the box very tight so there is zero movement.

I also tape over the addresses just in case the box gets wet, but I use a Sharpie to print the addresses on.

Anyone who ships Busses and doesn't insure them is a moron IMO.

yep you are talking bout a lot to lose,i tape them up tight also with no movement,i print the addresses on a computer to print them on the package and tape them like c4..................

Three Busses and shipped Uninsured? No Busse should ship uninsured.

You may be out of luck.

+100.

When I make a trade, part of my conditions in the negotiation stage of the deal is that I will ship Priority with insurance, and expect the other party to do the same. Did you insure the package you sent? Did you expect the other guy to do the same?

For really valuable parcels, and three Busse may well reach that threshhold, I would use Registered Mail. It is slow, and expensive, but far and away the most secure means of delivery.

Mint Mojo/Mofo like that have been selling for $600 - $650.

Good luck, I hope you get it.

And with some of the knives worth $800 and up it makes since to insure them.

LE's are not replaceable if lost, once gone that number is gone forever. Every LE is one of a kind and unique from the other LE's in that series.

Also some of the older models are hard to replace as are ones with certain options, and also the Custom Shop knives.

Same here. I think it sometimes takes more time unwrapping my packages then it took time to wrap them up in the first place :D

Yes I always ship with insurance and signature confirmation. I did expect the other guy to do the same. The other two knives were an original run FSH with leather sheath and a HG55.

I thought I invented that!

Generally, I wrap em up in paper and saran wrap just like Amy-0 does it, but include my contact info under the wrap, then box em up well enough that there is not 'rattle' in the box.

I've learned the hard way that everything valuable must be shipped insured. The postman tells me, and maybe the good mod ESAV could verify, that insured packages require each postal worker to sign for the package, adding well needed accountability. Incidentally, I was told that this also adds a day or two to the deliver time... FWIW. ;)

Hope you have a good resolution to this matter... it's a horrible thing to be sure. :grumpy:

I am very sorry for your Loss. It's awful, I just hope and pray it shows up:thumbup:

Like Esav said, only registered packages get signed by everyone that touches it.....insured is only signed for by the recepient only, and only if its insured for $201 or more.

I have shipped and received a ton of packages all over the world for years(not a boast. Just a fact) and I only use USPS period. They are the only ones that I have found that get it done right.

I have only had one problem ever with USPS and that was with a Delivery confirmation that slipped through the system. It was delivered when the mail had been stopped while I was on vacation, and was left hanging on my mailbox.n Luckily, my buddy was watching dogs and put it in my garage. This was one of the reasons I got a PO box too becasue Delivery confirmation is only as good as the carrier that delivers. I have dogs so my last carrier even with invisible fence wouldnt even pull in drive and blow horn. She would just leave an attempted delivery that was never attempted cause she just left in mailbox and drove away. Problem was so did my package. Then I would have to wait til following day and go get it anyway.

Delivery confirmation is useless and insurance is only good if its more than $201 so that it gets signed for other wise IMO its not much better than a DC cause it can still be left at the door. You might get a refund in 6 months though.

Here's an explempary praise too....Back home in GA my grandparents were older, my grandPa has a bum leg and had to cross a real bad hwy to get the mail. Well, their carrier had my grand pa move his mailbox all the way off the road up by their house right in front of the garage:eek::cool::thumbup:

It was safer for the carrier too. She just pulled in. The box was located perfectly on her side . She unloaded it, usually said hey , and backed up and turned around safely in drive.

Needless to say she gets pies and all sorts of goodies from my Gran still today:)

Oh man, that's a devastating loss. It's also the reason why I've changed my for sale ads to "Priority with Insurance" from "Priority with Delivery Confirmation, Insurance Extra and Highly recommended". Nobody was paying for the insurance. Steelnut made the point once to me (during a trade) how absolutely important insurance was and he convinced me. Now I think registered mail with insurance is the way to go. Good luck!

BTW once I had an expensive package missing, I was freaking out and it turned out my neighbor had it. It was sitting on the floor next to her front door for a month and she forgot about it. I finally was able to get the name of the person who signed for it. Too bad it doesn't look like you'll get it by those means. Go door to door maybe? Just don't look like you're soliciting them nor peddling Jesus and they may open the door. Good luck.

Question for the pros. Would you ship to someone that doesnt have a verified PP address?

I will, BUT... IIRC, PayPal does state that it is recommended on the receipt email to check the address for accuracy with the Buyer if the address is not confirmed through PayPal, so I send an email to the Buyer asking for them to verify that the address is accurate before shipping the package. I run all addresses through USPS for a zip+4. Helps to weed out the occasional typo, whether mine or the other party's.

Does that include Jerry and Skunk? Because none of the dozens of knives I've bought directly from Busse or from the Company Store have been insured, and up until very recently none were even sent certified or delivery confirmation. (My last purchase from BCK might have been sent certified, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't insured.)

the difference being if a knife is lost/stolen, they can easily replace it, and almost certainly will. as much as they ship, it may not be cost effective to insure every package.

when we sell here, most of us will not be able to afford or are willing to simply replace a lost/stolen knife.
