Some years ago when I "declared " my intent on making knives, my young daughter said....."Cool, you can make me a Katana".

If that's not inspiration for Success, idk what is???

She's graduating highschool next year, so I better get off my butt.

I'm not so much as a traditionalist, I don't fit the norms, I don't follow the rules. I'm difficult to be around.....I cant follow proper form, Heck....I don't even know what That is?

But I like stuff. I like making stuff. This one is Mine.
(Her's, but You know what I mean)

I'm done dreaming, and looking for excuses.
Ordering materials soon.
I'm 99% I'm going with 14C28N steel.
Ordering a bunch now.

This is it. *The sharpie drawing

Serious question....

Should I not worry That much with the grip at the pommel? Is that not much concern?

My choppers feel Great, I thought I could cheat, and borrow that part of my other's design?

Obviously I respect Your opinions a lot.
Just trying to learn some

Lexan version next to some choppers

I think I'm very highly word that rhymes with and means nothing similar to ''regarded''

Saying that, I think mecha is correct. ID go with a traditional handle shape. Just have the arc of the belly continue to.the end of the handle and have it be the full width of the blade.

I only say this because I'm doing a bit of katana work in my karate class. It's much easier to manipulate the way that I need to to perform basic sword actions with a uniform handle.

I'd go no pommel but like I said. I'm highly ''regarded''.

Anyways. I'm going to sub to this thread because I'm curious what you decide to to and will cheer you on the whole way no matter your choice.

Children are the best motivation.

Mecha Mecha

I like how the spines curve flows through the handle, but what a good way to terminate it at the pommel? Shape wise?
Maybe Axe handle height at the end?

I'm Not wrapping these, my handles are usually Micarta, wood, teroT or similar.

Blue tape covers wrong lines, the top terminates at the upper corner at the blue tape.

There are swords that have more Machete type handles, Crag, just not Japanese. Google Sansibar, for instance.

Your sword/design though and her expectations, so I don’t feel competent enough to give you any other feedback.

No, I trust you. You see to know, and have great taste.... I'll go look that up, I'm not familiar.
Thanks!

It Does look Cool, and cleaner simplified as Mecha suggested (idk If that's the right word) I'm sure it's not, I don't mean to be offensive, it's just comes out of Me that way...

That looks cool! I'd just flare it a bit and shape it like the cap on the back of a katana's handle, perhaps give the entire grip a very subtle wasp-waist.

That handle shape and orientation, the way it flows with the blade, makes for a smooth curved-sword cut that pulls or flows through the target, rather than a chop or hacking action.

It seems that almost all swords have a very simple grip shape. It's the guard and the rest of the hilt that get all crazy!

Yes.
I was originally thinking the bird's head pinky hook on the handle would aid in a Chop like action. I wasn't envisioning a Slice. With thinner, lighter stock, I should think slice more

I haven't cut the steel, so this is all good discussion, good time for making changes.
Thanks.

Doesn’t really need the thumb ramp IMO. It’ll probably just get in the way on a sword. On something like that I want to be able to butt my dominant hand right up to the guard and have that part of the handle be round and neutral.

I'm not seeing it as a thumb ramp. I generally Hate thumb ramps, and I'm agreeing with you....

But I'm seeing it as a integral guard.
That large radius feels good against the palm in reverse grip stabbing motions.
See pic.

You need a sword to feel good in reverse grip? That’s a new one on me. Swing that lexan one around and see what feels good.

Haha...Yeah, maybe, idk? Stabbing should be ergonomicall regardless orientation....

*I'm not sure If you were being sardonic?

You implied it. so thanks for nothing.

But have you ever held a sword in reverse grip? The act alone should tell you it's a safety liability.
