Thats right...the tip down down carry thread!

I generally carry tip-up, but I don't see it as a big deal...UNLESS you have a weak detent...which was "inherent" on my $725 big-name folder.
In that case, it can hurt.

For me, it varies by knife. In general, if it fits comfortably and relatively low in my front pocket in a tip-up orientation, then that's my preference. That said, I have a number of knives in my regular rotation that I've positioned as tip-down (Leek, Blur, Skyline, to name a few).

Hey Nccole, I was just wondering where you picked up those low-pro clips. They look fantastic.

Thanks,
Adam

I do tip down carry with all of the knives that accomodate that. (BMs only allow tip up.)

It's just what seems to work best for me.

Yay tip down!
I'm with ya on that one. I've even gone so far as to drill and tap my BM Contego and Rift for tip down carry. I really liked the knives, but I'm hardwired for tip down.

I don't have a preference, and I typically carry a given knife however it came from the factory, even when the knife is drilled and tapped for either direction. As long as I can clip the knife to the lip of my pocket so it doesn't fall down into the pocket and turn sideways, I'm happy.

I can't carry tip down, just can't do it. I tried when I had the blackout spyderco milli pass-around last fall and I had to carry in my back right pocket cause it was to large for my front pocket. I was able to manage but I didn't get used to it. I have all my knives tip-up right with a deep carry clip if possible and if they don't offer that I mod them to. I carry in my right front and my left rear and tip up right holds the spine against the corner of my pocket.

I usually carry tip up but I found that tip down is the better choice for knives with larger blades, unless they have flippers. Glad my Spyderco GB Folder comes tapped for 4 positions.

Looks like this would make a good poll, there are quite few tip down carries here and some good points for both kinds of carry. This is a good read for me!
Before I jumped on the ZT bandwagon my EDC's were CRKT's M21-14SF/M16-14SF, both of these knives have large flippers/hilts on them that are a pain for tip up carry as they take up a lot of room in your pocket...even a pain tip down carry as a large chunk of the knife sticks out of the pocket. But hella easy to open because of the many deployment options on the flipper.

I just place my index finger under the clip and place my thumb on the scale nearest my body, pull up, rotate my hand with the butt end of the knife pressed against my hip and the knife is where I want it to be - Every time. Doesn't matter what size the knife is - it works every time. Never looked back.

I prove it to myself frequently- tip-up is faster, no comparison. I put my thumb on the scale against my stomach, approximately at the pivot, and the end of my first finger on the end of the pocket clip where it connects to the handle, usually on the screw heads themselves. This gives me enough traction to pull the knife out. This also puts my thumb right at the thumb stud or blade hole, ready to open the knife. If I do this with a tip-up knife my thumb will be a couple of inches away from the thumb stud.

Threads on carry methods always start a war. I'm willing to express my opinions and back them up with facts but I find that many people that like to carry top down just like to do it and can't claim that it is not slower. Granted not everybody carries right front pocket in tight jeans like I do, and not everybody cares how fast their draw is. Plus carrying tip-up with the blade against the edge of the pocket is probably safer with blades that have light detents, and tip-up is the only way to operate a knife with a wave.

When I started buying knives with pocket clips and one-hand opening features they came tip-down and I never thought about anything else. I still have my AFCK and Leopard that are tip-down. For awhile I carried a mini-grip tip up and it worked for me, but this is the largest knife that works for me tip up. Anything bigger and it is too awkward. I have to pull the knife out of my pocket, and of course it is pointed the wrong direction, so I have to toss it up in the air and catch it flipped to the correct direction, then I can open it. You can imagine the problems with this draw technique in certain situations.

I have tried to buy only knives that are tip-down but there are a lot of knives that appeal to me that only come tip-up. I buy them and carry them in my rotation along with my tip-down knives.

You're right. I've seen these threads get ugly before, which is ridiculous. Until the day comes where someone is carrying my knife in their pocket and I have to pull it out of that person's pocket (which would be weird and I'm not sure what scenario that would call for) I couldn't care less. One could bury one's blade at the front of one's sock under one's toes and I couldn't care less. If it works for you, crack on then.

Tip up or down it doesn't bother me, draw time is +-.01 second in all reality... I like that the millie is tip up, tip down would make it awkward to draw since it has a large handle.

The important thing I learned was spine to seam, been caught by tip up and tip down in my pocket, same result.

But I still carry tip down.

I prefer tip up usually but some knives just work with tip down, such as the Spyderco Military I've had one with a tip up mod and I didn't like it as much.

I am ambitipdextrous, I carry both ways and have no preference. This is the only aspect of my life that I go both ways in and have no preference ... just in case that questions was about to be poised.

I carry on my left hand or "weak" side, because I carry a firearm in my right front pocket. I have been stabbed numerous times by tip-up knives that magically open themselves in my pocket. More than I can count. Within the last week, a Caly 3.5 stabbed me in this manner. So I try to carry tip-down, or if tip up, with the blade situated in a manner where the back of my pocket prevents it from opening.

I agree with this. Before I concerned myself with the "tip up or tip down" controversy, I cut the hell out of myself with a tip up benchmade that opened up on me during training. I prefer tip down for that reason.
