The 12 Days of Medford

Great review, I have had a 187 and although big and heavy there is no doubt they can cut better some other brands with titanium lock side and g10 show sides. It is of course big and heavy as mentioned so that makes it a bit less carry friendly but I did carry it and enjoyed doing so. Again thanks for doing this love the pictures and all the testing well done.

Cute write up and photos. However, I don't doubt that there exist slimmer, lighter, cheaper, more ergonomic knives with a better warranty policy that could perform as well or better. This is coming from someone who has previously owned a total of three Medfords, all of which I eventually ended up selling. I see them more as pocket jewelry and/or Instagram eye candy that happens to have decent cutting performance than as knives optimized for tasks such as those you demonstrate in your writeup.

I do have to agree that Medford's heat treat of D2 is pretty much optimized, however.

Way to completely miss the point of this thread.

Stab, EXCELLENT thread, man. I loved your pics, it's always fun to get to ride along on what appears like a great place for a woods romp! That Medford clearly did what it was designed to do, and did it well. Excellent.

Hey Stabby!! As usual, excellent write up and the pics are awesome!! Thanks!!
But holy cow brother......you eat a lot!!!
😬😬😬
Also, another knife that didn't explode upon use!!
👍👍👍

Great write up..

Love to see a knife being used for everything and it being able to perform very well at the tasks you threw at it.

MKT's are not for everyone, and aren't exceptional at one thing, but they make really good hard use EDC knives...miss mine!

Things seem to work out well when you understand what you require a knife to do, and buy the right knife to do it...

Maybe you're right, maybe not.

Maybe you should put something like this together for all of us to enjoy, and to see what you can do with the "Slimmer/Lighter/Cheaper/Better Warranty" It would be a better use of your time, and a wonderful contribution to this forum.

Outstanding thread!!! But put on your big boy pants because your still going to have people tell you your knife wont cut, it's too thick, it cost to much, Greg is mean, and your warranty sucks. :D
Enjoy it! I have the Praetorian T and TFF-1 and I love my Medford knives. Glad to see you putting it to work.

I own a 187 and IMO an Opinel would outperform it at just about every one of your example uses but the batoning of wood. I say this as someone that likes and sometimes carries a Medford 187. I cut stuff with it, and successfully too (OMG, wow, pocket brick cuts) but I'm not going to pretend it's a particularly good knife.

I can open a can of soup with a hammer and take pictures of the bowl of soup to prove it, but that doesn't make it a great can opener.

Dumb too-thick tacticool knife is still dumb. Also, Greg Medford remains an epic moron until proven otherwise as far as I'm concerned.

Best. Review. Ever.

You almost made me a Medford guy!

It made me into one along the way. :D

That was a fun read, very nice write up. And refreshing too to see a sensible take on a MKT knife.

That was great fun! Thank you for doing that.

It was a lot of fun, and fun is, well, fun.

I found it depends on the pants pocket. Two pairs of cargo pants from the same company happened to have slightly different pockets (production variation); one was super comfortable to carry the knife in, barely noticed it was there. The other pair carried it okay, but I noticed the knife.

Is that a pretzel bagel?!?!

Yes it is. :)

It really is a great place to get out to.
It's nice to see the variation of the place at different times of year and in different weather.
Everyone seems happy out there too. This time, before the woman with the dog showed up, we saw 3 people in their early 20s walk by. They waved hello, and were just out for a walk in the beautiful weather.
It got up to 12 degrees Celsius, in January!

Never seen that many people out there before.

I do like to eat. ;)
I'm beginning to think that "Exploding Knife Syndrome" is greatly exaggerated in its frequency on the internet. :D

I found it turned out be a really good knife.

Now, are there other knives that can perform the same tasks?
Yep.

Are there other knives that can perform a certain set of knife tasks better?
Sure, that's why there are different types of knives, like kitchen knives (except the knives in my kitchen...my wife likes them on the dull side).

But if someone likes this knife and wants to buy it, they will end up with a knife.
They will be able to use it for knife tasks.
It will cut things.

It is a really good review made all the better by the pictures of food. So can you explain how you used the steak stake? Is it basically just used to hold and suspend the meat over the fire without puncturing the steak?

You might be right...

...and look, in the very next post! :D

As far as Greg Medford goes, his videos remind me of "stream of consciousness" and "free writing."
I was watching a bunch of his videos, and he'll say something that makes you say "Hey, what the hell?", but 5 minutes later, or in another video, he says something that clears it up or expresses a different opinion.
He's putting himself out there with minimal editing (if any), and that means there will be things that rub people the wrong way at times.

You split the stick about 2/3 of its length, then remove all splinters from inside. Smooth it out.
You open it up, put the steak in, then tie the open end closed.
Then you lay it across the fire with your Y-shaped sticks, and rotisserie it. :)
Turn it every so often so it doesn't get burnt.
If you have the right level of coals, you can go gather more firewood and do other camp tasks while it cooks for a while, rather than having to watch it the whole time.

...and look, in the very next post! :D

The funniest part is that everything I wrote is still true. I didn't claim the knives wouldn't cut, just that the knives perform poorly compared to other knives. Greg Medford is an idiot (stay tuned for more shockers, up next: water is wet). Which part of that is untrue exactly?

Should I hammer in some nails with a brick (you can, it totally works) and post a thousand pictures of successfully nailed boards followed by "QED this brick is an excellent hammer"?

OK Stabby, that was really well done...

BUT... Little Wooden Boy??!!! Epic. Gratuitous Tick reference and Little Wooden Boy fabrication for the win.

But damn you man... now I have to ignore the internet noise and take this folder seriously... damn you man. From me and my wallet.

Well done bro; thanks for taking the time to do this.

Stab, does the center of the steak (covered by the stick) get cooked? Or is it a "eat the ends then throw her back on the fire" type of deal? I saw you put it back on but maybe that was just to get a nice char?

I really wish people would stop attempting to pose their opinions as facts.

Literally all your points are your opinion, not facts, sorry.

Just think, get the Medford and you can have a wooden sidekick of your very own too. :D

The center part contained by the wood ends up cooking the most perfectly of all. :)
All the juices are sealed in, as the meat outside the stick traps it all in.
I threw the steak back on because I like the slightly charred tips.
I have cooked them before over a bed of coals at lower heat for a longer time, and eaten the whole thing once it was all done; that was good too.

Oh, and here is the knife with my aunt's ball python being held by my brother's wife, after we all finished eating pizza:

Applied the orange filter, as it gave a nice effect.

"On the fifth day of Medford, the knife gods gave to me,
A python that likes to climb trees."
