Thank you Ed, and a Merry Christmas to you too.
My father started something like this many years ago, he hid a gift at my grandmother's house, and after Midnight services on Christmas Eve, he told me that "Santa" had left something at grandma's. Being about 17 at the time I wondered what he was up to. Pretty much the whole family was in the choir, so we always went back to grandma's after church. He disappeared into the back of the house and came back with a huge wrapped circle that could be nothing but a cymbal. Since Dad hadn't been too keen on my rock-n-roll escapades I was floored. Sure enough, a Paiste 24" ride cymbal was wrapped up, which I still play to this day. After that, there was always something for me and Mom at grandma's after church on Christmas Eve.
Thank you for reminding me of this memory with your tradition. Dad will be gone 20 years this January, and I lost Mom last month to cancer so it will be a tough Holiday this year. While I'm not in choir in my new church, I am lectoring on Christmas Eve, and afterwards we'll stop over my mother-in-law's house. Not the same, but a new tradition instead.
