The 2021 Garden, Landscape, and Other Stuff Thread...

Swan gourd flower. Didn't get what it needed this year because a tomato completely overgrew its "tomato cage" and fell over into it. I can't even find the cage! I'll prioritize those swan gourds next year because I think they'd look cool growing with sweet peas.20210821_111208.jpg20210821_195217.jpg

Pumpkins did ok. 20210821_194205.jpg

Last years mixed sunflower seeds did great. Dahlias and sweet peas too. Looks different every year!20210821_111407.jpg20210821_110616.jpg20210821_104718.jpg

bigsurbob bigsurbob ... Sweet peas are a favourite of mine - no telling where the tendrils will go and where they will find anchor in the garden :) Here I have them in pots on the N side of a small shed, mixed in with zinnias. Perennial sweet peas, planted by distanced neighbours, are blooming along the sunny river bank as well. Great shot of dahlias, sunflowers and sweet peas!

Mine as well. I've got an old jar of seeds from my late grandfather that I haven't had the courage to plant yet. He always had the best wall o sweet peas. I remember him being so dedicated to picking them, and they smell so good. He said that if you pick them, it encourages new flowers. Win, win. In the past when I'd planted sweet peas or snap peas, I had a real problem with powdery mildew. But it doesn't seem to be a problem nowadays. I never overhead water, but the Boy, 3, certainly sprays everything top to bottom!

Next year I'll brave some grandpa sweet peas in a bed dedicated to them and the swan gourds. Until then, I'll just enjoy these sunflowers. I love the variety. 20210824_102827.jpg

This one will be the largest red one... I'm really looking forward to it!

Here’s the next generation of pineapple plants. I cut the meat off the stalk and peel back the first 3 or 4 rows of leaves. Then they go into a cup of water for a week or so. Then into a 5 or 7 gallon pot.

A less-seen "Big Sur" landscape view. The ridgeline in the distance leads to the Ventana Double Cones. This ridgeline contains the roughly rectangular "window" from which this wilderness got its Spanish name: Ventana Wilderness. An old Esselen legend has it there was a land bridge across the top of The Window, but geologic evidence says nope.Ventana.jpg
