I thought I would start a new thread regarding the .22 , I love this cartridge. I think it is the best invention for wandering through the woods, backyard, farm, or in the "basement" of your house. There is a wide variety of ammo, high velocity, snake shot, shorts, & "no gun powder" that is suitable for indoor shooting.

There are so many good guns to choose from too! Who doesn't like the classic Marlin model 39? You have great target autos, sadly many discontinued like the Colt Woodsman Target, or the High Standard Citation. There are cheap and expensive revolvers and rifles suited for every age.:)
I use a revolver mostly but enjoy the rifle for its accuracy. It is an amazing cartridge that can bring home dinner. Heck, Annie Oakly did that for her family when she was young. I think, can't remember, I must have 11 or 12 different 22's. I'll take a count and list them later.:D

Some of my most memorable times with my son was / is walking through the woods plinking. Sadly most of the land is being developed and it is harrder to find gun safe areas.

I agree, the .22 is a great cartrige. Cheap, accurate, great small game and target caliber.
I have an old remington 514 single shot and a Remington 597.Nothing fancy, just Sub $200 guns that can stack bullets at 30 yards!

Its a lot of fun to just take a brick of shells and Stevens little favorite and go out plinking. As a youmgtster I furnished many a family meal with my .22. Good thread. Love to shoot my Buckmark Camper as well.

Once as a kid our clothes dryer went on the blink. My mom called the repair guy and had him fix it. Upon finishing he came up to us in the kitchen eating lunch.

"This wasn't the reason it broke, but I thought you'd might like to know about this."

He held out a double handfull of assorted .22 ammo, Shorts, longs, long rifle, magnums, shotshells. They were bent, nicked, corroded, etc.

My mom was horrified. We were too busy picking out the ones that still looked good. Mac

I started with an old Stevens single shot at 8 years old and have had a bunch of them but I think my fav is my Ruger 10/22. I got a wire stock for it and it fits in my BOB--KV:thumbup:

I have an older Model 39 Marlin that's a real "tack driver." It's my favorite .22 rifle. I also have a stainless steel Ruger Mk. II Standard model that I put low-profile adjustable sights on. It's my favorite "woods running" pistol.

PICT, that is a classic story!:D

With 3 grown children and 6 granchildren [ the oldest in college] I bought and handed down most of mine, but managed to keep 7. The rest are at the kid's houses. I love shooting with the family, cheap too.:)

Let's see..............20 of them, I think:confused:

Great cartridge, it has put alot of meals on the table, and kept the pests at bay. Some memories too, like when the lady was vaccumming the house and one went off inside the beater bar of the vaccuum. There was a loud pop, and she complained that the machine was blowing up. I found a bent exploded cartridge with the bullet intact. Must of gone off when the beater bar hit it on the rim.

The other time was when throwing the floor sweepings into the wood furnace. There must have been a few swept up. Damn things started exploding when I added wood. Closed the door and it went on like pop corn, Dorothy just laughed, so I think she knew more about this.

My son turned 15 last month. I took him and his buddies shooting. We shot the following
Bernadelli .22 pistol (Walther PP sized)
Hi Standard Trophy .22
Remington .22 rifle (60 + years old)
Hi Standard 12 gauge pump shotgun
Astra 357 mag revolver 6 inch barrel
Marlin Mod 94 44 mag carbine
Ruger Mini 14.

At the end of the shoot the gun they all agreed they liked the most was that 60 year old bolt-action Remington .22 rifle! I had the stock and barrel cut down for my son many years ago when he was a small boy. Now he stands 6' 3 " and that rifle looks like a toy in his hands, but he cradles it fondly.

I have photo's of my son shooting that Bernadelli .22 when he was about 4 years old. I would help hold the gun while he aimed and pulled the trigger. The .22 is truly a great cartridge.

Thanks for the stories fellows. I enjoy reading them, thinking about the old times.

Lazydog1, I bet we have the same Remington. Sounds like a good time.
It reminded me of the Chipmunk I bought for my grandson and now he is over 6 ft so his little brother uses it, #2 grandson. :-)

There is a good article in the November 2007 issue of American Hunter (the NRA Hunting magazine) about .22 rimfires. This year marks the 150th birthday of the .22 short, which holds the record as the metallic self-contained cartridge with the longest reign of continual production.

My two favorites .22s are my Henry Golden Boy which has the smoothest action of any gun I have ever handled, and an old Mossburg .22 that my granddad used as a training rifle in the army between the two World Wars. It resembles a 1903 Springfield and was used in place of one in training since the ammo was cheaper and the gun was more pleasant to shoot.

I love shooting 22's
I own
2 Ruger 10-22's
1 Remington Viper 522
3 Marlin 60's
1 Chipmunk
1 Russian Target 22

1 H&R 22 revolver
1 Browning Buck Mark Camper 5.5"

I've been thinking of taking up .22 shooting and this thread has whetted my appetite still more:thumbup:

As I know little about this ,could members make suggestions for RIFLES please? Be nice to have one with a magazine. In another thread I saw the HENRY Survival rifle, very compact and dismantles, but worth getting? Bit expensive, 300 Euro(420 dollar)in the EU for this survival rifle. Any thoughts welcomed plus what to consider with ammo?

Hello Willgoy-

I'm really not familiar with what's available for cheap over there. You could take a look at some of the CZ models, they may be a little out of that price range though.

The Ruger 10/22 is nice and easily modified, and will be cheaper. It's an auto though.

My Savage has been a very good rifle, rugged and quite accurate. Lightweight, too.

I think the best .22 rifle for the money today is the Ruger 10/22. There are loads of accesceries and extended magazines. Standard mags are 10 shot but you can buy 30 and 50 rd. I say stick with the 30 rd, more dependable. The most accurate is the German Anshutz but you can by 3 or 4 Rugers for what one Anshutz will cost.

Great thread. The .22 rocks.
Currently I only have a CZ-452 and it is a great rifle. So here is a question; there is a scope on it right now should it stay or go? I figure it has sights so maybe I should be more traditional and remove the scope. On the other hand the scope makes it more accurate at bigger distances.
Scope no scope?

Has anyone gotten a conversion for a Glock? The one I looked into seemed to only operate properly with the hotter commercial loads.
I think it was this

anyone have any experience?
