It's SHARE TIME again! :D Maybe some feedback and reviews will come of it. (No pressure here, Orion and Girlfriend lol)

Here are the constraints and requirements paraphrased from PMs
Odaon said:
Orion is looking for an EDC with a 3.5" maximum blade length due to Colorado knife laws. The only small EDCish blades he's had so far are the Patch and F2. He's mostly been curious about the Handyman, Pocket Kephart, and Esquire. He was also open to whatever I wanted to send to them.

His girlfriend Marney (sheeeze, when you are you going to pop the question already??) is picky about knives, will love it or hate it and has shown interest in the PK, Runt, Mosquito, and Pipsqueak with the PK seeming to have the most interest.

Original post continued ...

I don't have a Mosquito or Pipsqueak but reviewed my inventory and have just dropped "a selection" off at the post office. This will be somewhat a surprise and Orion had/has no idea what is coming in their direction. These are in order of blade size, not OAL. Blade length was measured from intersection of spine/handle to tip, not cutting edge length.

General commentary ...

The list and pictures are not in matching order because the Lonestar is out of place in the pictures. Ooops

I wanted to send an OKT Warthog along but had to weigh what would fit in the 22 available positions. Since Orion has owned a Warthog in the past, I didn't send one of those along. That model however, it is a super EDC to consider in this blade range size.

My personal every day knife generally falls into the 3" to 3 3/4" range so this share obviously took some thought/struggle regarding which ones I could do without vs which ones were difficult to not have. Probably the most difficult to send off was the newly acquired Lonestar EDC. The final deciding factor to send it off was that Orion didn't seem to care about getting the Lonestar but the purpose of the share was for them to hone in on their max 3 1/2" EDC preferences. Since "EDC" is part of the Lonestar's name, I couldn't not send it. Besides that, I had little to no visual interest in the Lonestar EDC whenever they did come available but having gotten one in hand, it completely won me over. The tip is particularly useful in an EDC role, the belly of the blade has a useful/functional shape and it feels good in the hand. After that, the Handyman, Minuteman and EDU were next difficult to part with. I have duplicates for most of the rest so that alleviated part of the withdrawal anxiety.

"Female input" is also an interest close to my heart living with four of them every day. Any chance for input on the Fiddleback/WAS/Osprey knives from a female perspective would help provide input for the Makers to consider. Who knows, Orion's Girlfriend may NOT have a persnickety pinky. hahahaahahaha, shout out to Sarah!

Orion and Girlfriend have DIBS but the knives with "FS" in the pictures are/will be for sale. So this should be interesting to see if they have actual interest in buying those after having a chance to check them out first-hand.

The package weighed close to 6 1/2 lbs. if anyone is curious.

Anyway, I hope this turns out to be fun like the share(s) with ~P

Thanks,
Jerry

Cool stuff Jerry. Given the very large range of models and handle configurations it can be overwhelming making a purchase given the cost per knife. I can see a lot of people going over and over and over with the buying decision, trying to determine the right profile, handle material and tapered vs full tang. Fortunately, or maybe not, the available steel choice is decided for you more often than not with Fiddlebacks and Allen's knives. Chris and those Osprey knives are always throwing in a steel choice every now and then to make it even more daunting.

I personally love Andy's Bushboot and Chris' Mamushi or EDU for everyday carry. Allen's Sawnee and Rustamuk are up there too and have the rustic cool factor along with them. I dig the hell out of the Rustamuk. Much will depend on local restrictions, but the Handyman is a great one too IMHO.

Really, all of the models work or can be made to do what you need to do in a pinch, but it is always interesting to see what people find they prefer given a choice of trying out and experiencing options first hand.

Looking forward to see what you and the better half come up with odoan.

Jerry's Knife Show and traveling Flea Market is hitting the road once again. Looking forward to reading which one(s) peak Orion's and his lady's interest.

Leave to Jerry! I mentioned my lack of a dedicated Fiddleback EDC, he graciously offered to send me some to check out and asks which ones I was interested in, I mentioned a handful, maybe 6 or 8 or so, and he sends out 22!!! Goodness, this should keep me busy.

Jerry, thank you for the opportunity to check out all of these EDC options. I can't say how much I appreciate your generosity and trust. Barring a visit to a dealer or the forge itself I wouldn't ever be able to get my hands on anywhere near this number of different models. I'm definitely looking forward to it.

We will definitely share our thoughts on all of the options and post up various pictures a la Sarah, though I doubt I'll be able to hold a torch to her eloquently constructed musings.

Haha! This is another awesome thread in the making. Looking forward to see what happens. :)

Trail hands, Warthogs, and Bushboot are all good choices. I have to applaud Jerry for being such an extraordinary Fiddleback Forge ambassador.

And kudos to Orion for sticking to his guns and not inadvertently becoming what most of the rest of us have. Knife collectors!

Agreed! This is a special group of people that hang out around the Fiddleback Family.

Believe me, it's becoming quite a challenge to resist the collecting urge! Luckily I'm very strict about my budgeting so I only spend money on knives when there's money to be spent on knives! (And the very occasional grail that gets bought out of my "relief budget") :D If I didn't have such a severe gear addiction there would be more money for knives. Instead I buy a knife every once in a while, and a new pack, and a fly rod, and a gun, and a new tarp, etc. Haha!

PS. Your contribution to my EDC search will be included in my thoughts even though it isn't part of "The Family". Thanks again for that!

Odaon, I would gladly send my Mosquito and a few from Allen's lineup that fit the parameters. If you feel like taking on more than Jerry is sending that is. PM me your address if you are interested. From top to bottom are: Sawnee, Revenant EDC, unnamed spear point, and Mosquito.

Goodness! That would be awesome! This is already going to be quite the task, might as well get more of them in there to compare!

Thank you for the generous offer! Pm incoming.

What a great collection of EDC type knives. This is almost too many to choices. Good luck and I am excited to hear about your thoughts and opinions on the knives.

Sometimes it is too many and trying to swap/cycle out the carry knife, picking/choosing and getting the heck out of the house can take a while. 1st World problems, huh? lol

No problem at all, my pleasure. This is actually fun to share for all of the interesting view points and opinions it raises. Lots of folks here helped me out when I discovered Fiddlebacks, almost 1 year ago to the day actually - so this is my way of giving back. And in a sick way, it is fun to try and spread the madness to others. :)

Sweet Nathan!! Thanks for having my back with the Mosquito. Maybe someone can share a Pipsqueek too. Heck, I'm sure there are other models in the < 3.5" blade range that I don't have that maybe others could share too. I'm really glad I posted this up now and wasn't expecting others to jump in too so that's awesome to see.

I recently picked up the Minuteman in a trade and was really pleasantly surprised at how good it feels in the hand. Allen has some other models too that seem to be infrequently made this days but he's got a nice variety of smaller EDC size blades among his lineup. Bush Adder is one I'd like to try out if the right one popped up.

Anyway, thanks again for helping / contributing also!

Looks like I'll also be sending a Surls Huntsman and one I think Odaon will really go for, the Toboggan.

Oh my! Haha. All I can do is just sit here and smile.

I'm going to end up with every sub 3.5" blade ever made by the Fiddleback Family.

I'm really looking forward to all of the comparisons guys. Seriously, I can't say thanks enough.

A few personal comments and comparisons:

Let your eyes stare at the WAS Palmer and the Sylvrfalcen, blur a little and imagine the "Rhino horn" (quoting someone from last Friday) on the Sylvrfalcen is not there. The remaining part of the Sylvrfalcen kinda looks like the WAS Palmer, except maybe the guard area.

I'm not sure if anyone else might see it but when I received the Lonestar EDC, I immediately thought "This really reminds me of a squashed (top to bottom) and stretched Sylvrfalcen."

There are a LOT of Bushfinger fans out there and while there's no Bushfinger in the pics above, note how the old style Bushnub retains the Bushfinger very useful blade shape but is shorter, doesn't have the Bushnub II guard and ends up being a nicely pared down Bushfinger. The story on this Bushnub being up for sale is that I grabbed it simply to get the opportunity to check it out, thought I might light the handle material but I'd prefer a Bushnub with something like ironwood or a ruby or navy burlap. I'm hoping the model makes a revival or I'm hoping someone provides an opportunity to purchase theirs. Ideally, I would love the one that was on The Knife Connection but sold at one point. It was this one:

Wow this is great!

Orion, looks like you will have a lot of models covered already. I'd be glad to send you a few more to make this experiment even more thorough - Fiddleback Sgian Dubh, Surls Patch, Fletcher Pro 6-5, and Fletcher 24/7. These are all great size for pocket carry for me. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

Oh man! Let's do it, if I'm going to be comparing might as well compare as many different EDC models as we can! I'd love to get a fourth Fiddleback Family member into the mix with Fletcher knives.

I'm going to be stressed out having all of these knives to take care of! Haha!

Thank you Kris! PM incoming.

You've outdone yourself once again, Jerry. Not only is this an amazing thing to share, but that data table is outstanding as well. Thanks for contributing so much information for all of us.

Orion, I have a feeling you are gonna have a lot of fun with this. I can't wait to hear your thoughts!
