What about the model number? Does yours have the model number on the pile side? I have one with handle pins and no model number; it's the version with handle pins and model number on the pile side that seems pretty elusive.

Bert looks to be correct, no 1971, pin scaled, pile side stamped 303. A No pin scale version, 1971 to 74, is pile stamped for certain.

My hand written Charles Toft's list is either incorrect, that or only Charles Tofts had one with old handle and newer blade. Will consult all around and make sure newest 303 list is correct or will be corrected. Can't mess with it anymore, I was suppose to be doing yard work and said I was going to bathroom. If I don't hurry she will think I passed out...

I think in this case it's OK...what an outstanding collection/display. Preston

When are you going to stop screwing around and start collecting those.:D

Thanks for the props everyone!

This is the result of several years of patience and persistence. Sure, I could have spent a fortune on these and gathered them up in a hurry on the bay; but in this case, it was the journey that was more rewarding than the destination.

I think 300 said in another post how he felt something was overpriced and passed on it to never been seen again. I can sympathize! There were a couple of these that I figured I missed my opportunity but luckily they came back around. There are few missing as far as handle options in this collection. I have a couple of advertising buildouts and multiples of some that aren't in this display. And I have a couple left to acquire: the LE Solitaire version and the Painted Pony are ones that come to mind right away.

Oh... and the Camillus with pins and pile side model number. I pulled mine out and can confirm there is no model number on the pile side. Some day it will cross my path...

Here is a bit of trivia that's new to me. I just noticed that the hammer on the shield for the Camillus 305 is slightly different from that on the Camillus 301, 303, and 309 shields.
The hammer handle for the 305 is not tapered and it is closed at the end. The others have a tapered handle with an open end.

How is that for important news?

I can't look, 'cause I don't have any of those...pictures would be nice for those of us lacking in the Camillus/Buck department. Thanks. Preston

pjsjr, here is a Camillus 303 shield with the tapered and open-ended handle. I don't have a 305 photo handy, maybe later. As mentioned the 305 has a handle that is not tapered and is closed at the end. It's very similar to the second 303 photo, which is the current shield. A big difference is that the 305 Camillus has an ellipse shape instead of a racetrack oval.

Thanks, Bert, interesting observation...wonder what other subtle differences in 300 shields await. Preston

Curios if it has something to do with the glued on shields versus the cast ones... interesting observations none the less.

It = the difference in the hammer appearance on the shield. Sorry, I didn't think to quote what I was speculating to. I can see how it looked like a random outburst...

Greg,

My original comment was about the Camillus 305. The shield for Camillus 305s was glued, but had the straight, closed-end handle. Shields for the Camillus 301s, 303s, and 309s were glued also, but had the tapered handle with an open end.

Without some digging, I can only describe the situation for the 303. In 1988, possibly early 1989, the shield changed from "BUCK" back to the hammer, knife, bolt. The shield was glued and the design was essentially the same as that of the Camillus knives. Then, in about 1990, the integral construction with the shield tower started. That was when they switched to the longer, straight handle with a closed end.

So your comment about glued versus integral holds for the 303, but it doesn't explain the Camillus 305 design.
