the 5 or 6

For a woods/camp knife I'd pick the 6,love mine. The 5 is an awesome blade also, but I already had a BK2,which fills the same roll as the 5.Hey,why not get both?:D

If you ever need to dig 6 completely frozen in the ground tent stakes out I can assure you that the 5 works real good. Who needs a shovel when you've got an RC-5?

If you're not sure which you want, get the 6.

You need to "want" the 5 to appreciate it, IMHO.

+1 on this!

I have a 6.
I was part of the passaround for the 5 and am apparently the lone guy who didn't like it enough to buy one.
The 6 is my preferred go-to knife when I'm heading out the door into the pasture or woods. (especially when paired up with my Izula 2 or eskabar)
There's nothing wrong with the 5, it just didn't feel right to me -- where the 6 was love at first carry.
unless you're an ounce counter, the extra weight of the 5 is a non-issue.
The glass breaker wasn't noticeable on my belt.
The molle back is worth the price -- if you don't want a molle back, check out Texas Hunt Co - they make an excellent sheath that is compatible with either blade. (I picked one up recently and it fits both my ESEE 6 and my BK3 TacTool! but not at the same time)

I think I can appreciate this!

I would imagine that the benefits of the 6 are instant.

The 5 requires a little bit of time to develop the relationship...like a good work horse, it might seem a little wild and unmanageable at first, but once you develop the kinship, there is not much you can not do.

I need to get a 6 one of these days, but I have not so far because I despise choils of that sort (that allow substrate to slip off the back of the blade into a dull notch). Perhaps someday I will try one anyway...

I have both and I agree with the majority here that they're both great knives.

I think the 6 is the way to go for camping, hiking or general woods use.

The 5 is just cool and owning it gives you the general feeling that you're prepared for about any "what if" you can imagine.

What about the Lazer Strike? It will be something in between the 5 and 6. May not be for everyone, but looks like an awesome bushcraft knife to me. No serrations, no pommel. Just thought I should mention it.
I have the 5, and I wear it lower on the belt so, not much problem with the pommel in my side.
I'd get the 6, and a BK2 just for fun, at $60 you can't beat the Becker.

well i'm still stuck on the fence, it's not that bad of a place to be ether. i'm leaning to the 5 side but not quite sold yet.

i like the stainless but i figure it will still be a couple years before it works its way to the mass public in the different sizes.

i can't ever remember batoning wood, never had the need as a axe or hawk is always close at hand

I would recommend the 6...

Had the 5 and sold it - just too thick for the length, IMHO and the 6 felt bombproof enough.

HERE IS THE GOOD NEWS - if you dont like it you can always sell it on the Exchange here and make most of your money back OR why not just buy both, briefly fondle both (:D), and return the one you like least?

.

I have a 6 and recently gave it a light run through. I love it. It's all the knife I want. I don't have a 5, but it seems a little much for general woodsbumming. It sure has great balance. Good luck.

i have the ESEE 5 and i love it. with my 5, sak, and 16" wetterlings i can accomplish any task. oh yeah and my strikeforce ferro rod.

The 6 is the first ESEE I ever got, and the first time I took it out I realized it was just what I needed. Ripped up a camp sight, got the jungle hammock up, got some fire going, food prep - that 6 will do it all. (As I learned that night, you can even defend your Maker's Mark from your buddy if necessary...) You will not be disappointed with either, but I recommend the 6. Strat

Get the 6 it was designed by esee for real world camping and survival use. The 5 was designed as a downed pilots last ditch tool by a sere group. For your use 6 is great all around.

I love my 5, I have butchered several animals with it, and it performed flawlesly. The sheath is nice to, I am not a fan of the clip plate, I ran same 550cord through it, and use it like that to fasten to my belt. The glass breaker hasnt been in my way. I wouldnt trade mine off.

I say 5. I just got it, and I have never tried the 5, but i think it was the right choice.

well after all the suggestions here i looks like i'm going to go with the 6. i'm sure both knives would have fit the bill and stood the test of time. but a little longer blade is never a bad thing

thanks for the suggestions guys.
