The Adventures of Pearl !!! Host list post's #22 and #23

Willy, nice job hosting Pearl. Even though Pearl loves to go to new and interesting places like the source of the Mighty Mississippi she looked the happiest while watching the girls for you. Thanks for including us in your part of Pearls continuing adventure. I look forward to the next leg of her entertaining journey.

Thanks much... I had a blast with Pearl and I too am excited to see what adventures she goes on next! Fun fact, the water Pearl touched at the headwaters of the Mississippi at Lake Itasca will take about 3 months to reach the Gulf of Mexico in Louisiana almost 2350 miles later... I typed that in the voice of Cliff Clavin ;).

My, Pearl is a rapid traveler! I picked her up from the post office today, a day ahead of schedule. I guess she’s been getting a lot of practice with this whole travelin’ and visitin’ thing. :)

willythekid willythekid thanks for seeing to it that she got here safe and sound. Looks like she had a great time with you and I hope I can do the same for her here in California.

Here she is checking out the garden in our back yard:

I’m looking forward to taking her to visit some more exciting sites soon. Stay tuned...

Pearl's been visiting almost a week now, so I think it's about time I shared some of what we've been up to.

I started by showing her my neighborhood, through the best way I know: taking her along on a walk with my dog, Rufus. Here we are in our local park, where many of my What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today? photos are taken, usually with him off camera.

He's doing his best to look like he's being patient to get that treat that Pearl is holding. ;)

Yesterday my wife and I took Pearl to McArthur-Burney Falls State Park, which is a few hours north of us, situated between Mt. Lassen and Mt. Shasta. We'd never been there before, but enjoyed hiking the waterfall loop trail there and camping there for the night.

Burney Falls isn't huge, but we all found it quite impressive in the way the water fanned out over the volcanic rock. We started by taking in the view from the top:

AlajkAPh.jpg

And then hiked down to get a view closer to the bottom:

Here's the full view of the falls:

From there, we continued along the waterfall loop trail until we had to opportunity to divert and travel along the Pacific Crest Trail for a bit:

After the hike was complete, we set up camp, enjoyed a meal, and settled in to relax in front of a campfire until it was time for bed.

This morning after breakfast, we broke camp, packed up, and drove to nearby Lassen Volcanic National Park for a quick stop before heading back to the Bay Area. Lassen is a really neat place with all sorts of geothermal activity, but, unfortunately we didn't have enough time to show Pearl those sights. We did get in a quick look at the Manzanita Lake and part of the hike up this trail:

nah4Cceh.jpg

We had to turn back about halfway to the Crags due to time constraints, but that turned out to be a good thing. I don't have a good picture of it, but we were treated to seeing a bear cub climbing a tree and then seeing its mom watching from not far away. That's the first time I've seen bears in the wild, which was pretty cool.

After that we headed back to the Bay Area. I'm hoping to take Pearl up to San Francisco next week to see the Golden Gate bridge, but hopefully we'll get in another adventure before then.

Greg, thanks for sharing some of your hospitable treatment of Pearl with us!:cool: Engaging narrative with fabulous photos! I'll bet Pearl is very glad for the opportunity to see some of the local sights and to "bark with the big dogs" such as Rufus. ;) Looking forward to more of her visit with you!

I have a couple more small adventures with Pearl to share. First, it wouldn't be a trip to northern California without at least a quick jaunt to the wine country in Napa and Sonoma counties. So, that's what we did on Sunday. We didn't stop for any wine tasting this trip, but Pearl saw many a vineyard as we drove through the area. Here she is taking a closer look at some of the vines:

uNJ28elh.jpg

The prime motivation for this trip to Napa was actually not wine, but a visit to Bouchon Bakery in Yountville, CA. It's owned by chef Thomas Keller, who is well known for his very fancy restaurant, the French Laundry. We were seeking brioche buns for use with burgers later in the day. It was a hot day, so some cold brew coffee found its way into our order, too, and, if you're at a bakery owned by a famous chef, you pretty much have to also sample the pastries. :D

On that trip we drove over the Golden Gate Bridge, but didn't stop to take a look. We fixed that yesterday, though, and Pearl got to stop and take in the scene:

mcw8ftFh.jpg

After that, we headed over to Crissy Field for a walk and another view of the bridge:

REdoNOyh.jpg

As we turned and walked with the bridge at our back, we had a view of Alcatraz Island looming in the Bay. It's not a great photo, but you can make it out here:

TDz51Mjh.jpg

After a stop for lunch, we drove along the coast and stopped at Ocean Beach to take a couple more photos. First is a view of the Pacific Ocean with the landmark Cliff House restaurant over to the right:

km5JVmmh.jpg

Turning around to the look the other way, you get an idea of how long this beach is and, more fun in my opinion, you can see a bit of the two old windmills that are on the edge of Golden Gate Park:

That's it for this installment, folks. I hope everyone is having a great week.

...
So you introduced Pearl to Paris-Brest tasting. Hope she enjoyed the moment :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris–Brest

... Ive gotten to see sooo many beautiful places that I otherwise would not have.
Thanks R8 and all the hosts!
I'm in TOTAL agreement with FOG2 FOG2 !! :thumbsup::cool::cool::thumbsup:
In particular, thanks to Greg for his latest installment from northern California.:thumbsup:
We have some grape vines growing on our back fence, we have the Mackinac Bridge connecting Michigan's two peninsulas, and we have some fantastic Great Lakes beaches, but those are not the same as CA wine country, the Golden Gate Bridge, and beaches on the Pacific (not a question of better or worse, just nice to expand my horizons).

FOG2 FOG2 and 5K Qs 5K Qs , I completely agree. I've had a lot of fun following this thread and seeing all sorts of different places I haven't had the opportunity yet to visit in person. As GT put it, it's not a matter of better or worse, but rather noticing, appreciating, and celebrating the differences that make this world we live in so interesting.

Pearl is on her way for a visit with Pàdruig Pàdruig now, but I showed her one more sight before sending her off:

This reservoir is a favorite photo spot of mine that sits on a "scenic route" alternative to one of the major highways here. During morning rush hour it's both quicker and prettier than the main commute route.

It was a pleasure hosting Pearl. Thanks everyone for following along and for your kind comments.

Thank you, Greg, for showing Pearl a grand old time and sending her off to me. She arrived here in Oregon safe and sound and I retrieved her from my mailbox earlier this afternoon.

I haven't had a whole lot of time to show her around quite yet but I figured we would start with a beverage, get to know each other a little better. I really enjoy seeing @r8shell's work up close and in person and it has been a pleasure experiencing this particular Case pattern. A first for me, I think.

It was a hot day today and the kids wanted to go play in the creek so I finished my beverage and we took a stroll down to the water. Beautiful day today, a little warm for my liking, but still pleasant.

Saxon had a blast. Though he was more interested in kicking up sand then he was in getting in the water. He is getting bigger...

We didn't spend too much time at the creek as it was starting to get a little dark. I decided Pearl needed a nice glamour shot to end the day with.

More to come in the next few days, folks. Have a terrific evening.

Just catching up with this thread (when I should be working)! Fantastic pics Greg, you live in a beautiful part of the world my friend. Nice to see Pearl arrive safely in Oregon Dylan, that looks like a great start to her time with you :)

Took Pearl out on a date last week to the historic Bagdad Theatre in Portland, Oregon. We were chaperoned by my wife, a friend, and our kids (apparently it was deemed indecent to accompany the lovely Pearl without adequate supervision) :D.

I love old historic buildings and the Bagdad Theatre is no exception. Built in 1927, it has maintained much of its original look and charm, with obvious changes here and there due to technology and modernization. We arrived early to secure the most excellent balcony seats, order some food, and have a beverage or three before the movie started. If any of you are parents and are a fan of the original Incredibles movie, I highly recommend Incredibles 2. I was a superb movie that I am sure most, if not all, parents can certainly relate to.

The Bagdad Theatre is currently owned by the McMenamins organization which is a local entity that purchases old buildings and locations for the purpose of not only preserving their historical significance but also providing a gathering place for families and friends to enjoy good food, drink, other accommodations, and entertainment.

You can read more about the Bagdad Theatre here:

A more modern one (not mine):

My apologies for the quality of my pictures. The lighting was less than ideal and being the place that Portland is, I was hesitant about being obvious with my knife photography.

A peek at some of the old school features prior to being full of people:

This coming weekend will see my son and I going on our annual father/son camping/fishing/crabbing trip and Pearl will be accompanying us to experience some of what the Oregon coast has to offer. More to come soon!
