The Air Divided by Tarwar

tarwar really does look like a darb dont it? always skirted around it though for some reason- got quite a few others though, like the lovely tibetan sword etc.

Sure does wicca. I wish that they would put a longer dha/darb style handle on some of these ~ then I would HAVE to buy one!

Whats up Steveo? Good to see you.

Stevo, I have average hands, perhaps a little on the large size, and there is more than enough room on the handle for both hands plus shuffle room.

There have been a bunch of Tarwars, but only a couple in neem. Neem seems to come in brown usually, but every once in a while in a gray variant that is really nice. It has a hard glossy glowing look to it that is very striking, sometimes with other colors mixed in. I have a 15" pen with this stuff, and it looks like Munk has it here as well, unless the colors are wrong in the picture. As far as I know that is a first for this model and is really something.

Bura is the Tarwar guy. Kumar has made some nice ones as well, but Bura makes his slightly heavier and they handle that way. All are 29.5" as far as I know. 37 oz. is perfect IMO. I waited a long time to get one, and finally got one that Bura did in plain old satisal, but with two thin brass rings inlet into the grip. It weighs just under 40 oz. I think he did a couple of those and I got one from Uncle Bill.

Then maybe a year ago Kumar did 2 or maybe 3 in smooth hill walnut that were 5 or 6 oz lighter and after seeing Sweet get the first one I managed to snag one as well. It is a lively 34 oz., which is a noticeable difference. If I was really going to be using it to do battle I would take the heavier Bura. It just screams weapon and you know it's going to do the job.

I had _thought_ that 2 was enough, and then I saw the gray Neem wood on this! :D  :( I need to sell something off...

Norm

P.S. Nice touch on the neem block for epoxy mix. (Is that the piece in the third pic the sword is sticking in? Wow! :D ;)) I should ask Yangdu for a small piece of satisal and chandan. That could come in handy. I usually use just redwood dust, but it doesn't always blend as well. Very neat repair on the crack, and good pics.

huh..someone drop my name:D Monk with 13670 posts and still lacking in the photo postings:eek: :D

Wow. How big/long is that? Sure looks longer than the 29.5" Norm mentioned, and accurately I might add.

Well hell Munk, I'm going to have to get me one now. I can picture myself doing some of the moves from the "Zelda Heroic Rage" movies on Newgrounds with a tarwar now.

Kinda like a sword that thinks it's an axe, huh?

I'm sad to say that mine has seen very little use. There was the initial torture test and a bit of woodworking; later, brush was cleared, trails were blazed, and the poor thing made an appearance at the MWKK '05. It hasn't been out much since then. I'm not one normally bothered by the opinions of others but one cannot go out in the woods with a sword without raising hell...not even around here. I don't need the attention.

Besides, it's a sword, right? I shouldn't be chopping wood with it anyway. There's my excuse.

Should the zombies ever come to Silverdale...well, let's say that I'm prepared. That's good enough for me.

And watch it with the sword purchases, Munk. They tend to accumulate.

Those who live by the sword,
apply a credit card towards the sword

It is really hard, I mean difficult, to generate an acceptable role
for having the sword at your side in the National Park, when you meet someone along the trail. I suppose you could dress like Robin Hood. Maybe mutter something about the damned hobbits, and did anyone remember to bring the wine?

Yeah, you'd better have a film crew behind you, or at least a lawyer with a video camera.

...I got it. Wear the sword proudly, I mean I don't care where you have it or how many bells in your hat, just make sure your best friend is hiking behind you wearing a rented Cop's suit.

Sword? What sword?

You mean this machete? It was hand-made. Called a tar-something. Glad you like it.

The Tarwar is on my list now. All of the comments on it by you folks (I would normally say "guys" but I don't want to offend any female forumites) pushed me to the edge of the cliff, but I think it was the picture Sweet posted that actually sent me into the precipice. :)

(One can never have too many zombie-slayers.)

Sweet's Tarwar has the most graceful blade of any of the Tarwars I've seen.

Steve

I am happy to say that mine is the twin of Ben's. Kumar did them at the same time as far as I know and they were offered within a few days of each other. Very graceful blade, and a bit lighter than most of Bura's. I was lucky to snag it.

Sweet's pics are so good that he makes all his stuff look fantastic. Munk saw that as well, as in the pic it looks about 40 inches long! Beautiful. His knives look better in pictures than they do in person, and they look great in person. ;). I think that comes with having a very sophisticated and expensive camera and having the skill to actually use it well. :D

That's an interesting observation about the camera making images look better than they do to our naked eye. When I saw the Tarwar, I knew it was photographed in a way which made guessing it's real measurments tricky- I still thought it was longer than it was.

My son Carter and I are experimenting by putting various things on the blade for coloration. We tried chokecherrys today. When I get done I'll see if I can't get a picture up.

The rainbow colors of say a color case hardened reciever on a rifle are hard to get. I may end up with a patina that simply looks like sludge.

Thanks, it's good to be around! I've been pretty busy with life ~ oldest boy has had out of town soccer tournaments most weekends, and I recently took on a new role at work. How are things with you?

Munk, I figured that the stock handle was big enough for two hands (looks pretty good size). Your sword really is a beauty! I just like the visual shape/balance of the thai and burmese dhas, that's all :). Maybe I would need one of each for comparison purposes. BTW, have you been forging with your friend? I remember you guys were starting to set up shop, but don't remember where you left off.

Yes, I did some forging. There's a peice I need to get over there and get back to pounding.
I was surprised how short a time you have to actually work with the metal, before it cools and has to be placed back on the heat.

I'm a tarwar guy. I think I favor swords more than khukuries lately. (is that OK to say here? :-) ).

I remember with Uncle Bill sent me my tarwar - he sent a note to go chop a tree with it! You usually dont' here tree chopping and swords in the same conversation. The thing that drives me nuts is that I put my tarwar somewhere, but I don't remember where I put it and it's hiding in a closet somewhere in my house. I was doing some martial arts exercises with it for a while.

I am also a big fan of the dha. Particularly the larger temple dha's that are so darn hard to find. Japanese swords are great, love the European would love to get into fencing one day.

When I saw the Tarwar on the HI shopping site, I knew amongst swords, it would be the one I'd have. It fits me. It is exactly stout enough to do the things need doing with a sword. Well, at least if I were transported and lost in a Science Fiction book, on a planet with vicious men and undead laborers.

I was never going to get a sword. Now mine is sitting there outiside in the sunight with a bunch of crushed Chokecherrys laying on the blade, just trying to catch a Patina.
