The Ashokan Gladius Challenge......

I am SO glad I stayed up later than you sick SOB's Saturday night.

...this does, however, explain Mikey's unusual walk and posture for the rest of the weekend!:barf::barf::D

Good times, you guys... good times. Ashokan went too quickly!

I agree Matt, much too quickly, i almost hope the year in between goes fast! But it will give me time to improve, process the imformation i learned and absorbed from this year, and maybe have some stuff to really show next year.

H'mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I thought sleeping with earplugs, in the bunkhouse at Ashokan, was a smart idea. Little did I know that I'd miss the good stuff.

Too bad Chris didn't video this, it would have been a major hit on YouTube...........

Of course given the wicked stickers Mike brought to Ashokan this particular move was gutsier than it looks.

Why did I think Mike was sleeping in the glove compartment?

As far as Ashokan being too short it seemed to fly by for me.....................

hey hey hey i twisted my ankle on the wiggly bridge i swear!

hey matt arent you still the thumb wrestling champ?

yeah i was tired at the end of it all. but sure as hell wish it was a week long. not enough time. if you pay attention to all of the demos like i did the first two years. then you regret not speaking to the demonstrators... but if you spend too much time with the demonstrators you regret not seeing all the demos like i did this year.... so its tough you really need to pick and choose. and know you can't see it all, but if you spend some time pciking brains and spend time watching the demos you havent seen before. you're all set.

either way i don't think it could be anything less than WICKED awesome right mace?

WAYYYYYYYYYY too short! I am STILL a bit brain-dead from sleep deprivation! Friday and saturday nights I missed the Wheresheep 'cause we didn't put the forges out until almost 3 AM, and since I got back I've built another gas forge, and started 2 more billets of Damascus. Gotta put EVERYTHING you learned under the hammer betore you forget it! Right? Sleep? what's that?Ashokan is only about 50 weeks away , gotta make new stuff!

Hey Page, if you are looking to unload your old gas forge, i might know SOMEONE (me) who might want it.

Is it too late to enter? Some of you might remember this one from Saturday night. It's at 400 grit finish for now, and light as a feather.

Nice Sam....that's sweet! I'd make the handle a little thicker though :D You'll have to bring it next year (if you still have it).

Hey Sam do you ever sleep?
Those of us who actually have to keep day jobs are jealous!

Looks good, now do one in damascus!

HAHAHAHAAA!!!!!! No i don't, in fact if you come really close to me you can hear this slight buzzing noise. And besides SLEEP WHEN YOU ARE DEAD there are blades to be made! I cannot wait to break into the damascus world, my new forge will be much better for welding than the old rivet forge i hope.

whatcha doin for your new forge?

Maybe next year the gladius challenge should be Damascus, heck we've got 9 months to build em, Sammy you should be able to pound out 60 by then! :D

Built a new one from scratch!

That last picture you can see the tuyere, ash dump door, clinker breaker handle and counterweight to keep the clinker breaker level. The firepot is made from 3/8ths thick plate. table top is 3 foot by 4 and 1/2 with a 4 inch lip around the rim. I just need to do some creative piping and then make a blower mount, and get the chimney up and then it is good to go!

Ahh to young again, but, that's not the issue here. Nice looking blade Sam. I really appreciated it at Ashokan. Can't wait to see it this year.

Wicked job on the coal forge too.

Nice job Sam!

Page I still need to get mine done before making one out of damascus!!!

Glad to see the challenge continue.:D
Mace

so, we on for next year? 9 months . . .?

that will give me a whole lotta time to screw some steel up!

'course maybe we should do viking swords this year to go with Mace's hat, :D

That sutton Hoo blade was Damascus, right?

HMM, 9 months to get good at damascus, then make a big enough damascus billet to make a gladius out of? SOUNDS like a new challenge!
