The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

Delays Happen, it's inevitable on some models (especially a new model that has not been made before)

I have 3 question's Nathan

How long do you anticipate the Delay will be on the K-18?

What are you thinking as far as Daggers (From a Design standpoint)

Will the Integral Shiv be familiar (Similar) in design to the Original Shiv

Thanks

Tom

I don't know. Probably a couple months

Pretty intense questions Tom, can’t wait for the answers.:)

1. If you had to sharpen your fk, mc, bc. And you had to choose between systems wich would you prefer and why? EP apex, WE pro, KME?

2. How do you sharpen your field knives? I mean factory edge finish.

3. Digged in forums but couldnt find meaningful differences between behemoth chopper and behemother. What is main differemce and which one would you prefer and why for trekking way in forest?

1. If it were just me maintaining them I'd use my oil stones. I learned how to free-hand it and have no need or desire for a system for my own personal use.

2. Doing it in production and needing QA and repeatability it's done under flood coolant with a ceramic belt utilizing a parallelogram to control the angle, deburred on an Arkansas stone and stropped with a concoction of chromium oxide and diamond dust that I make.

3. The Behemoth is a fantastic knife, it might be my favorite. The Behemother is a variation that is a little bigger and utilizes the primary grind geometry we developed over time for the comp choppers and is one of the most effective choppers you'll ever use. Trekking in the forest, I'd grab an MC. It's light, well balanced and versatile. I can 5 hit a 2X4 with the BC, but I don't need that on a hike.

Great answer for n2 and amazing for n3. Exactly what wanted to hear. Thanks a lot.

About n1. I also freehand my knives for several years and i can freehand on table classic way or without table like michael christy does in his videos. But when it comes to restoring damaged edge with nicks or lost geometry (what im often asked by friends) it take much more time and my result isnt as efficent as freehand sharpening good shaped bevel knife.

That is why i wanted to know your opinnion about systems, if you would have to use one which would be that one.

Someday i want to invest in one for situations like ive explained so your opinion means a lot for me.

Thanks in advance.

The KME worked well on my old FK when I nick or roll the edge. The diamond stones work well on super steels, but the stones wear down quick and finding the perfect clamping location was a learning curve. It was easy to round the tip because the stones are so narrow.

I bought the Edge Pro Apex and found out the hard way that the stones barely touch super steels and the lack of a knife clamp was a pain.

The Wicked Edge, or Wicked Edge GO is my personal choice, but I haven’t attempted or needed to sharpen my Behemoth on it yet, but I did tune up a few fancy steel folders and an O1 Scandi fixed blade with it and it’s an impressive setup.
The 50/80 grit stones are beasts in case you need that kind of power.

I agree about the Edge Pro Apex stones. I spent some extra dollars and bought their diamond stones and those work well. It still takes awhile but I can put on a near perfect edge that you can see your reflection in.

Nathan,
I understand that all of the EDC2 and I guess 3's have an "S" grind. Would you please explain what that is.
Thanks

Imagine a shallow convex grind that is nearly a flat grind. Imagine taking that convex grind narrower and narrower. There is no limit to how narrow you can take a flat grind, but a convex grind will eventually curve back into itself. This is the basis of an S grind. It is convex behind the edge and at the shoulder but it has become slightly hollow in the middle and looks like a drawn out S. We developed this geometry for the competition choppers and it is part of the reason they bite so deeply and cut hanging rope with low drag but still don't become wedged in the wood cuts. Here is an old video of Jo taken after we got the geometry dialed in:

The other women competing in that cut took at least twice as many hits per board and to this day no other woman in Bladesports has ever cut a board in two hits. Of course Jo is the one who made those cuts, but the knife she is using doesn't hurt. That is the S grind in action in a competition.

The EDC doesn't really need this grind, but it doesn't hurt. We ground them this way because we were developing the machinery and techniques to create this geometry for the race knives and we wanted to use it elsewhere to fine tune the process. We now use it on all of the choppers.

Nathan:

Will the blade finish on the DEK1's in both AEB-L and 3V be similar to the finish on the Fk2's or will it perhaps be somewhat closer to the finish on the Fk1 knives?

Thanks

they will be our current surface finish which you see on the current production Field Knives.

Not a question but an observation and perhaps a recommendation:

I think that you are well positioned to take advantage of and also benefit from the very low rate SBA loans which will be a part of the upcoming economical rescue package, so if you have higher rate loans and/or wish to actually take a chance and expand, employ more people for your new shop, this is the time to get ready.

Now a Q:

Will there be DEK1 preorders for fancier versions? I would luv to see an option with either a swedge or an actual sharpened top edge :)

I've suggested that a swedge be standard issue...

They might close the borders with New York, who knows?

I rely heavily on Peters to help me with the heat treat. If I have to bring all heat treat back in house it will drastically reduce our output. We have attempted to qualify other vendors with the Delta protocol but to date Peters is the only commercial heat treater that has been able to duplicate the process.

And if I do bring heat treat back in house continued access to cryogenic materials is not guaranteed. It could get where I cannot even do the Delta protocol in house if I can't get liquid nitrogen for our cryo setup.

I'm not sure how many DEK1 are going to be available this year. A lot of that depends on how badly our economy takes an enormous shit here in the next few months and how that affects our supply chain.

^ lots of details and important nuances which usually escapes plebs like Unc. Matty

Nevertheless, try going for the cheap money if you can finagle around the stated issues. Yup, maybe preorders will have trepidations for your very conservative nature and proclivities. Totally understand and thank you again for being very proactive and transparent about your craft / business :)
