The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

The issue with combining dissimilar steels is finding a mix that are compatible from a heat treat perspective. Not just similar austinitizing and tempering temperatures, but also go through phases at the same time. Otherwise, the one steel is just an inclusion for the other steel.

There is some overlap in times and temperatures for many of the steels that I use. But if one steel starts martensite at 500° and the other doesn't start until 300, the finished work is going to be compromised.

"cohesion" is not a good metallurgical term, but I think it's an important concept. I think it explains why martensite formed in the temper does not behave the same as martensite formed in the primary quench, when found together in a narrow section like a knife edge. I could be totally wrong, what do I know (I'm hypothesizing about mechanisms to explain what I have observed), but same kind of structure, but formed at different times, not all the same thing.

My point being, a mix of shit in your matrix plays hell with edge stability. You want a homogeneous microstructure. Welding a bunch of stuff together to get an interesting appearance runs contrary to the basics of keep it simple and get everything converted the same to maximize its edge stability in an otherwise perfect alloy like 3V.

I would like to play with it at some point, but the process of optimizing a heat treat became complicated enough without adding unnecessary variables to the process.

I think this is less of an issue with simple steels that tend to have pretty good edge stability baked in. A maker whom I admire uses 01, 02, L6 to make a material that performs very well. It does not have the wear resistance and durability of 3V, but the edge stability is there. But I'm not sure that the approach scales up to the complex super steels.

I liked the little prick because he reminded me of my own kid. Clearly bright, interested in something other than TikTok, and pretty obnoxious. I predict great things for that boy. I'm also glad he's gone cuz he was starting getting on everybody's nerves.

The thing I try to keep in mind is the difference between some old person with an incredible lifetime of accomplishments, and me, and some young dumbass punk is just a matter of where we fell on the timeline and where we are at the moment.

Given the choice, I think I might rather be young dumb full of cum with a ton of potential than old and used up with a fantastic curriculum vitae.

My eyes have started to change recently. I need to go get some bifocals. Fuck.

We all knew it all at 17...15...whatever. But we didn't all have the internet to broadcast it on. I used to chip and chisel my messages in cuneiform...but it took a long time for those tablets to circulate...and by the time they did, most everyone had forgotten what the matter was. So you had to start over.

Being intelligent and precocious is not enough justification for being a burr in everyone's saddle. And there's still something favorable to say for respect.
