The "Ask Nathan a Question" Thread

I’m just curious out of all the rough use warranty models you’ve made over the years (Shiv, UF, HDFK, SDFK etc) which would you put your money on to be the toughest or the most durable of all the models if they were torture tested to the limit?

I would really appreciate a 50/50. I’d really like to get one but lately I’ve been spending more than I should on knives and a super cool pop-up camper. At 50/50 I’m definitely in for one. At full price maybe/probably. I keep debating selling a K18 to raise the funds but honestly I’d rather not have to.

Thank you for considering it.

Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist will the DEK3 be eastern whitetail unzipper of choice of current production knives? what is the height of it compared to the uf2? of course this is all preference but i'm used to a shorter blade height for processing.

The last deer I processed I used a K18 (I'm not kidding), an FK2 with a course edge and a sharp 10" butcher knife (basically in that order). No bone saw, because CPK. I used the FK2 for skinning and most of the disassembly. It is a little large for the application but it works.

I lean towards the DEK1. It's not a skinning knife but everything about it is pretty close to optimal for the application. I'd have used one on my last deer but the FK2 was sitting there.

You can cut through the rib cage with a CPK, just stay to the side of the sternum. You can also separate joints with no regard to the edge, it will be fine.

You can split the pelvis with an FK2 and a hammer but I recommend leaving it intact and disconnect the hip joint instead.

I do not like a lanyard on a skinning knife so that hole would be empty.

Compared to the old 119 Buck knife I used to use when I was young and dumb, just about anything we've ever made would be an improvement.

Oh yeah. I'm not trying to disparage Buck knives. But when you're a teenage boy at the knife display at Brendle's and they have a Buck "hunting" knife, it just seems like it's the right choice. I did mention, young and dumb.

... I'm not young anymore...
